Keeping Teens Safe Behind the Wheel. Teens go from one of the safest modes of transportation - riding in a school bus - to the deadliest - driving in a motor vehicle seemingly overnight. Motor vehicle crashes involving teen drivers not only kill teens each day, they also kill other drivers and pedestrians. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens. More teens die in crashes than the next three leading causes of death homicide, suicide and disease combined! Turning over the keys to young drivers should be done with care and responsibility; and educating others about teen safe driving principles can help protect our teens. Do you know what the eight biggest dangers of teen driving are? Driver inexperience - Most crashes happen during the first year a teen has a license. Driving with teen passengers - Crash risk goes up when teens drive with other teens in the car. Nighttime driving - Fatal crashes are more likely to occur at night. Not using seatbelts - Buckle up! This simple step can reduce your teens risk of dying or being badly injured in a crash by about half. Distracted driving - Dont allow activities that may take your teens attention away from driving, such as talking on a cell phone, talking to teen passengers in the car, texting, eating, or playing with the radio.
