ITEM:TEMPERATUREPROCESSCONTROLTRAINER
MODEL:LDA-TPC-A
This training system provides a comprehensive experimental of two loop system process control using water as
the process fluid in a temperature control system. The system comprises primary and secondary water circuits.
2 loop control system is implemented using water temperature in primary and secondary circuit as the process
variable (PV). In the secondary circuit fresh water is heated up by warm water through a heat exchanger. 4
temperatures measurement points are used to monitor the inlet and outlet of the primary and secondary water
circuit of the heat exchanger. The primary and secondary water flow also monitored by pulse flow transmitter
type of flow sensor. The fresh water outlet temperature in the secondary circuit is regulated by changing the
flow rate of warm water in the primary circuit. The primary circuit comprises an electrically heated tank, a
pump and a 3-Way motorized proportional valve as the control valve. The secondary circuit contains a forced
air cooling heat exchanger.
The Process Controller used in the process control trainer is microprocessor based and is easily configured by
the user to provide a range of control functions from 2-state control to 3-term PID control. It also features local
control or remote control with PC control software. Set-point and process variables can be analyzed, adjusted
and monitored from the PC Screen during the controlled process loop to get the optimum performance. The P
variable, I variable, D variable, controlled output level and the set point level are also displayed on the LCD
displays of the controllers for easy monitoring. Setting of Proportional, Integral, Derivative, Set Point values
are done from the control panel section of the PID controller. Setting of Set Point and Hysteresis are done from
the control panel section of the ON/OFF controller. The control variable X (Output level) and the manipulating
variable Y (Time stamped) and Set Point level is recorded in the DAQ system that can be used to plot the
process variables.
FEATURES
All components in the system are commonly used in industry and are systematically installed on a powder
coated steel bench. The system uses an electronic pulse flow transmitter type of water flow sensor and
temperature sensors to monitor the water temperature in the primary and secondary circuits. On/Off
proportional controller and PID controllers are used in the system for closed loop control experiments. Water is
circulated in primary circuit using water pump through motorized 3-Way proportional valve. Generation of
disturbance variables by manual valves to change the flow rate in primary and secondary circuits. Teaches
students to do PID parameter setting for optimum performance as well as other practical aspects in achieving
stable system in a real process control system. Familiarization of process control software and DAQ system as
well as transducers calibration in Data Acquisition process. The well-structured instructional material outlines
the technological fundamentals and provides a step-by-step guide through the experiments.

x Computer software for DAQ, monitoring and control (SCADA)
OPTIONAL ITEMS:
LDA-TPC-1: Water source tank with forced air cooling heat exchanger and water pump.
Additional features : Provide a stable temperature and flow rate of fresh/cool water source for
the trainer. (Using of fresh water source from water tap in the laboratory is subjected to
unstable pressure and temperature and creates waste water that has to be drained to a water
drainage system in the laboratory).
LDA-TPC-2: Analog signal interface for PV (process variable) and SP (set point variable).
Additional objectives : Ability to use oscilloscope to monitor the PV and SP during the
experiment when the Computer DAQ System is not used.
LDA-TPC-3: Replacement of micro-controller based controller with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) .
Additional objectives : Using PLC as controller in level and flow control application.
LDA-TPC-4: PLC programming software (computer is not included).
Additional objectives : Teaches students to do Ladder programming for PLC application in PID
close loop control.
LDA-TPC-5: Mobile Frame.
Additional feature : Provide mobility to the trainer and replace the need of a workbench in the
Laboratory.
LDA-TPC-6: Dust Cover.
Additional feature : to protect the trainer from dust and humidity.
