Sieve analysis

Objective
The purpose of rocksand and gravel classification is to arrange various types of soils into specific groups based on physical properties and engineering behavior of soils with the objective of finding the suitability of soils for different engineering applications, such as in the construction of earth dams, highways, and foundations of buildings etc.

Apparatus
Test sieves: 0.1mm,0.2mm,0.4mm,0.5mm,1.0mm,2.0mm,5.0mm A balance readable to 0.1. Clean water Riffle boxes. A drying oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 1050C to 1100C. Evaporating dishes. Metal trays. Sieve brushes. Mechanical sieve shaker.

Sample preparation
Dry the sample in oven of a temperature of 105oC for minimum 12 hours. The mass(m1) is recorded.

Procedure
Weigh the empty sieves (m1) Set all sieve in order from 0.5mm to 0.1mm. Put the sample on the ordered place sieves, put water and at the same time use wire brush to facilitate the particles passing through the sieves. Put the arranged sieves on mechanical shaker. Take the mass of each sieve with retain particles (m2). Calculate the soil retained (m2 m1). Tabulate the results and a graph

Calculation
Percentage retained =

1 kg of rocksand have been used
