Speaking of Joe and losing weight, his column inspired me
because he admitted he'd gained weight over the holidays. I
revealed in my last column that !'ve gained some extra weight
lately, too, though I didn't mention how much. When I look
at the brave souls on NyNaxNuscle.com who have entered
the NaxForm Life Challenge and how they have to post their
before photos, weight, body fat percentage and measurements
for the world to see, I'm humbled by their courage and their
willingness to bare it all even if it hurts their pride. So, because
of their strength, I will admit that I reached the heaviest weight
I've ever been (157 pounds). I'm tired of being embarrassed to
see people ! haven't seen in awhile because !'m a little extra
"huffy." !'m tired of not htting into my clothes. !'m tired of
being tired. So, it's time for a change!
Another person who is inspiring me right now is Frank
Fontanilla. You may not know who that is, but he is the one
who creates the fabulous Nax Nuscle ads you see in this
magazine. He recently started a 60-day challenge to get back
into great shape. He posts updates and photos on Facebook
and tags 40-50 people just to be accountable to do what he
said he was going to do. As a result, some of my friends and
I just started our own 60-day challenge. We have agreed that
the "loser" at each week's weigh in has to put $25 in the pot.
We also agreed to give up something for 60 days. For me,
it's wine and fast food. Fast food ! can live without, but those
who know me, know that ! LOvE my wine. !f ! even taste wine
during the challenge, I have to put $25 in the pot.
I'm telling you all this because I want you to know that all
of us struggle with things in our lives. We all pack on pounds
at various points in our hectic lives. It doesn't mean we are
failures, it just means we are human. The key is to pick
ourselves back up and get back into the htness saddle. Life's
too short to be miserable because you can't ht in your clothes
or you're tired all the time.

I kept telling myself, one day I'll get
in better shape. The problem was that day never
came. All I found myself doing was making excuses and justify-
ing how I had gained so much weight. The last straw finally came
at the end of 2012 when I had gotten so disgusted with my

I have four beautiful daughters and we have
been through a lot together over the past
seven years. My youngest daughter had a 15% chance

to athlete @malaka55 (Joe Castro). I'm
really proud of this guy. He's been one
of our inspiring transformations to date.
When I teach workshops, I educate how the mind controls our everyday triggers. Triggers that keep us
eating within this invisible wall where we cant escape and we continue this vicious cycle until our bodies
can no longer handle it. In Joes case he was heading fast forward into that morbid direction when he
was admitted to the hospital. I educated him about creating new afrmations. I taught him to create new
triggers to set his mind to tness and healthier food choices. It took a lot of practice and saying 'no' to Pop
Tarts. But with practice and consistency, he conditioned his mind to create new habits, and look at him
nowit possibly saved his life. He just needed direction and guidance, thats all. Proud of you Joe! Time
for you to educate others!

My introduction to Clackamas Max Muscle came on
Black Friday 2012. My friend Yvonne wanted to check
out the specials. I met store manager Mary Davis. She
explained how Max Muscle could help my workouts to
be more efcient. I had a frustrating three months of
counting calories and working hard at the gym and not
seeing the results I was after. I actually didn't have a
specic goal at that time, I just wanted to look better.
I had been using the excuse of just turning 53 so
it probably would be harder for me to lose weight and
tone. I gured why not try something different? My
way didn't seem to be working that great.
A few weeks later I went to another Max Muscle
store that was having a meet and greet with some
bodybuilders and tness models. I met IFBB Pro
Victoria Adelus. I told her I wished that I had thought
about being t like her when I was younger. On my
way home I thought 'why can't I see what is the best
53-year-old body I can create?' So my goal right then
was 18 percent body fat. The weight really became
insignicant.
I started my lifestyle change feeling a bit
intimidated. I wanted to be efcient with my workouts,
eating and resting. With Mary's guidance I fell into
a great routine in a couple of weeks. My beginning
weight was 143 pounds with 33 percent body fat
(using a handheld device). I didn't start pinching for
body fat until February.
As of today with the help of Max Muscle products,
effective eating and working out, I am 124 pounds
and 19 percent body fat. My annual blood work came
back with a cholesterol of 146 (a year ago, it was
186). My blood pressure is down. My golf game
improved. (11.9 handicap and am now hitting the ball
at least 20 yards further).

do or don't like a product and how your progress is

I used age as the reason it would be hard to get t,
but I now know it is just an excuse. It can be done and
it is fun to hear from other people, "You have guns!" I
have a great 53-year-old body and I am keeping it that

and employees. I love the way I feel every day.

COMPETITION!
In March 2013 I decided to train for and
try a gure competition. I have always
worked out but decided to step out of my
box and onto a stage. I weight trained 6
days a week for 12 weeks. I did various
cardio and of course I ate a very clean
diet.
My go to supplement was Emerge.

workouts done. There were days I could

The holiday season is dehnitely
over! Wow, a few months of eating
and celebrating with our friends and
loved ones and now it's now time
to assess the damage! ! personally
gained about 15 pounds. ! also
have hve teenagers in my house,
so my stress level is high around
the holidays. Between my lousy
diet, weight gain and stress...! felt
exhausted and ready to get back on
track with my normal routine.
This is why everybody pretty
much has the same New Year's
resolution. Think about it, most of
your friends and family are chanting
the famous resolution mantra: Get
back in the gym and lose weight."
So why should ! be any different?
! started a few days ago and !
already feel a thousand percent
better! !'m getting up early and
!'m hitting the gym. ! like to do 30
minutes of cardio before ! work
out and then 30 minutes of intense
lifting. ! try to do this hve days
a week. ! use the bike, treadmill
or elliptical for my cardio. Then !
rotate my body parts on a push-pull
system.
To do this you simply train one or
two push muscles one day and then

one or two pull muscles on the next
workout. (Your push muscles are chest,
shoulders and triceps, and your pull
muscles are back and biceps. Then on
one of your hve workout days, make
sure you train your legs hard.
This a pretty basic and simple
workout that many people use. !t

8 oz water
+ oz apple juice or fruit juice. Also

cup frozen strawberries

Planning is Important When It
Comes To Eating Healthy

When it comes to eating the 5 to 13 servings of fruit and veggies recommended each day for optimal
health, planning goes a long way in achieving this goal. Researchers at the Lisbon University Institute
recently looked at the impact of potential obstacles to healthy eating, such as holidays or traveling, and
how people worked around those obstacles. They also determined whether people were recording their
dietary choices and trying to attain their healthy eating goals.
In the study, 203 participants ages 18 to 50 years completed a questionnaire, which had questions
about their understanding of the health benets of consuming the recommended amount of fruits and
veggies, and how they might achieve this goal. They were also asked how they would overcome barriers
to achieving it. Then they were asked to record their actual consumption of fruits and veggies on a
typical day in the past week.
What the researchers found? All of those participants who understood the health benets of eating
fruits and vegetables
intended to do so. But those
who actually made plans
for increasing consumption,
such as taking fruit to work
or making out menus in
advance, and those who
had strategies in place to
deal with situations that can
undermine a healthy eating
plan, were more likely to
make intentions a reality.

dietary choices and making
changes when things went
awry helped, too.

ANTIBIOTIC SOAPS

When you reach for a soap


purchase, do you automatically go
for the antibacterial one? Health
experts have been saying for
some time now that for household
use, regular soap and water are
just as effective and far less
likely to cause bacterial resistance
to antibiotics.
But now, the Food & Drug
Administration is getting involved,
regulating that manufacturers of
antibacterial hand soaps must
demonstrate that their products
are more effective than plain soap
and water if they want to keep
them on the market.
Driving the new regulation is
not only concern for widespread
antibiotic resistance, but safety.
Antibacterial soaps commonly
contain an ingredient called
triclosan, which research has
shown causes hormone disruption
in rats. What this means for
humans is yet to be determined.
But for now, it may be best to use
plain soap and water or sanitizers
or wipes that rely on alcohol rather
than antibiotics to kill bacteria.
Anxiety & Stroke Risk

There may be a new reason to hone up on your relaxation techniques, say


researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh
School of Medicine. In a recent study, they linked chronic anxiety and stroke
independent of other risk factors for stroke, like depression.
While the researchers arent sure exactly the mechanism of the link between
anxiety and stroke, they speculate that it may have to do with elevated stress
hormones, heart rate or blood pressure. They also acknowledge that those with
high anxiety levels are more likely to smoke and to be less active, which also ups
the risk. Yoga, anyone?

This year, approximately
600,000 men and women will
die from heart disease. Here is
the latest research on keeping
your ticker in tip-top shape.
February is American Heart Month. And if, like most
people, you seldom give thought to your ticker maybe its
time to start. According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death
for both men and women in the United States, accounting
for about 600,000 deaths or one in every three deaths
in this country each year.
The term heart disease encompasses a variety of heart
conditions, but the most common is coronary heart disease,
also called coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD develops
when a waxy cholesterol plaque builds up in your coronary
arteries, the major blood vessels to your heart.
For many years, the theory of how plaques develop and
cause problems within the arterial walls revolved around
high blood cholesterol levels caused primarily by intake
of saturated fats and high cholesterol foods, said Stephen
Sinatra, ND, board certihed cardiologist and co-author of
The Great Cholesterol Myth. This whole theory of how
heart disease develops came out during the cold war when
Eisenhower had a heart attack. Heart disease was on the
rise then, and Eisenhower loved his bacon and eggs.
At the time, according to Sinatra, a researcher named
Ancel Keys presented a correlation between deaths from
coronary heart disease and the consumption of fat among
populations living in six countries. Only much later was it
determined that Keys selected only those countries that
ht his hypothesis, which was dietary fat consumption led
to heart disease, and avoidance of dietary fat, especially
saturated fats, was heart healthy.
This theory stuck for many years, said Sinatra. But we
convicted the wrong man, he insisted. We need saturated
fats for our lungs and our brains and for the transmission
of impulses through the nervous system. And we need
cholesterol in our skin to synthesize sunlight to vitamin D.
Instead of vilifying saturated fats, said Sinatra, we should
be focusing on the most important cause of heart disease
- systemic inhammation. !f you've ever had an athletic
injury, you're already familiar with painful inhammation
with its redness, swelling and warmth that occurs as a
result of immune system response to the injured area.
But inhammation that occurs within the entire body, called
chronic systemic inhammation," can wreak havoc in the
body. It affects not just one area, but many internal organs
and systems, including the blood vessels. And when the

THE STATIN DEBATE


The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology
(AHA/ACC) recently released new cardiovascular prevention guidelines that
have some medical professionals up in arms, particularly concerning the use of
cholesterol-lowering statins. According to the authors, the guidelines are based
upon the best available scientic data. In short, the new lipid lowering guidelines
move away from statin treatment based solely upon targeted levels of LDL (bad
cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol) and triglycerides. Instead, the AHA/ACC
recommend statin therapy for the following groups:
Those with conrmed heart disease
Those with LDL levels greater than 190
People ages 40-75 who have diabetes
People with a 10-year risk of heart disease greater than 7.5 percent, based upon a new
risk assessment calculator that uses an equation to determine risk based upon race, gender,
age, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, use of blood pressure medication,
diabetes status and smoking status.
Although many who have conrmed heart disease, high LDL levels and diabetes are
already using statins, adding the nal group (those with a 10-year risk of heart disease greater
than 7.5 percent), would amount to about 31 million people in all. That means a full one
third of Americas population between the ages of 40-65 are being placed on statins, said
John Higgins, MD, a sports cardiologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at
Houston. This is not entirely agreeable to him. For people with conrmed atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease, statins appear to be very benecial, he said. But for those who
do not have diagnosed coronary disease, it is a little more difcult to put some of these on a
medication for life that is expensive and that has signicant side effects.
Amy L. Doneen, ARNP, medical director of the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center
in Spokane, Washington, and co-author of soon to be released book, Beat The Heart Attack
Gene, agrees that the guidelines may miss the mark, stating that there are many root causes
of vascular disease that statin therapy wont help. She said some people who have high
cholesterol but not vascular disease or vascular inammation may be treated needlessly.
We use statin therapy for individuals who have plaque in their arteries, not simply because
someone has high LDL levels, because it is one of the best drug classes to treat vascular
inammation, she said. These guidelines have the potential to place many people on
moderate to high dose statin therapy who dont have arterial plaque and contrarily, miss many
of the root causes of vascular disease that cannot be treated with isolated statin therapy.
According to the AHA, the new cardiovascular prevention guidelines are simply a tool to
encourage those who may be at high risk for heart disease to discuss the risks and benets of
statins with their physician. Which is a good plan, said Dr. Higgins, because statins, like any
drugs, have side effects that may be uncomfortable. And for athletes, he added, statins may
impair the exercise training effect on maximal oxygen capacity and muscle adaptations.
While you may ultimately need a statin, said Dr. Higgins, exercise, diet and avoiding
unhealthy habits are still my rst line treatment for many. If we could do a better job with
lifestyle changes, we could cut down on the use of statins.

Once there, the plaque oxidizes and
becomes inhamed, causing a rupture
in the artery wall, which leads to the
formation of blood clots that may
obstruct the how of blood to the heart
and cause a heart attack.
Diet dehnitely plays a factor in
systemic inhammation, acknowledged
Sinatra. Fats such as trans fats, for
example, found in some margarines,
snack foods like cookies or mufhns,
and fried foods like donuts or French
fries - can increase inhammation.
Omega 6 oils (found in safhower,
sunhower, corn and sesame oils),
while important in small amounts
in the diet, can also promote
inhammation. And sugary foods
and drinks are huge players in the
inhammatory process.
Certain health conditions
are associated with systemic
inhammation, too, said Amy L.
Doneen, ARNP, medical director of the
Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention
Center in Spokane, Washington, and
co-author of soon to be released
book, Beat The Heart Attack Gene.
Numerous pathologies, including
insulin resistance, periodontal disease,
autoimmune inhammatory diseases
such as rheumatoid arthritis and
many others, increase inhammation,"
she said.
But diet and inhammation are
not the only culprits involved in the
development of CAD, added Doneen,
who explained that there's a strong
genetic component to heart disease,
too. According to Doneen, genetic
studies and numerous epidemiological
studies have identihed genetic
markers for CAD, including a form
of cholesterol that is a subtype of
LDL (bad) cholesterol. This type of
cholesterol, called Lipoprotein (a),
or Lipo (a), is linked to genes on
chromosome 6, and is a strong risk
factor for CAD and stroke.
What to do to reduce your risk of
CAD? Here are some important steps
outlined in Doneen's book:
Know your family history. Family
history of cardiovascular disease is
one of the most important risks to
keep in mind, with studies hnding as
much as a threefold increase of CAD
in those with a hrst-degree relative
with the condition.

Get regular medical care, including blood
pressure and cholesterol screening, weight
checks and testing for insulin resistance. If
you have high blood pressure, diabetes or
prediabetes, follow the treatment plan your
doctor has recommended to keep things under
control. And dental care, including cleanings,
should be done ideally every three months to
prevent periodontal disease.
If you have chronic conditions that are linked
with inhammation, such as hypertension,
diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or periodontal
disease, if you have a hrst-degree relative
with CAD or if you are simply want to lower
your risk for CAD consider a consultation
with a physician who specializes in advanced
lipid testing, as well as testing for systemic
inhammation, blood vessel plaque formation
and genetic markers for CAD. Many of these
tests are reasonably priced and can help you
and your doctor to make a plan to reduce your
cardiovascular risk before problems start.
Keep your weight down. Obesity is linked
with insulin resistance and with inhammation.
The best diet for most people is a Nediterranean-
style diet that emphasizes plant-based foods,
such as fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, whole
grains, legumes and olive oil, along with
moderate amounts of cheese, yogurt, hsh
and wine. Adding one or two squares of dark
chocolate (at least 72 percent cocoa) daily can
help to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure,
and stave off insulin resistance.
Dont smoke.
Exercise regularly. Workouts dont have to
be strenuous or long to beneht the heart. Even
15-20 minutes of daily walking can do wonders.
Better yet, alternate bouts of higher intensity
exercise (like jogging) with walking. Interval
training helps to lower weight more effectively
and improve cholesterol levels, as well as
decreases your risk for insulin resistance.
Sleep 6-8 hours a night. Research links
obesity, diabetes and heart attack risk with sleep
dehcit. MS&F

TO LOWER YOUR
CHOLESTEROL
According to Janet Bond Brill, PhD, RD, LDN, a nutrition and tness
expert and author of Cholesterol Down, there are natural ways to lower
your cholesterol. Statins are a miracle drug, but they put a Band-Aid on
the problem. You can get your cholesterol down with the most powerful
medication there is what you choose to put in your mouth, and
exercise, she said. Here are nine heart healthy things Dr. Brill suggests
you put in your mouth each day:
Oatmeal Preferably steel cut, is high in soluble ber, which reduces the bodys
absorption of cholesterol from the intestines, lowering your LDL (bad) cholesterol
levels.
Unsalted raw almonds Almonds are an amazing source of healthy fat and
disease-busting antioxidants. And research shows that a daily handful of the tasty
nuggets can lower your LDL numbers.
Ground ax seed Flax seeds health benets come from high ber and heart-
healthy omega-3s, and may help reduce both total blood cholesterol and LDL.
Psyllium husk Many studies suggest that diets high in water-soluble ber such
as psyllium husk can lower your triglyceride levels. And psyllium may also help to
stabilize blood sugar levels, a denite plus for heart health.
Beans Beans have cholesterol-lowering ber, but they also contain phytonutrients
that may play key roles in cholesterol reduction.
Apples Polyphenols, antioxidant compounds found in apples, may help inhibit
the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is the process that leads to plaque buildup in
the arteries. Apples are also a good source of soluble ber.
Plant sterols and stanols Plant sterols and stanols are naturally occurring
compounds found in plant cell membranes. They are structurally similar to the
bodys cholesterol, so when you consume them, they compete with cholesterol
for absorption in the digestive system, helping to block cholesterol. The National
Cholesterol Education Program recommends that those with high cholesterol
consume 2 grams of plant sterols and stanols daily, which can be found in fortied
milk, yogurt or juices or in supplement form.
Soy protein Numerous studies have demonstrated that including soy protein
in the diet, especially in place of animal proteins, reduce both LDL and total
cholesterol, especially in those with high cholesterol levels.
Garlic Some studies have suggested that garlic can have a modest effect on
lowering LDL levels.

Contrary to popular belief, cardio isnt
the only way to lose those extra pounds you
may have packed on this winter. Strength
training can actually be a better option to
burn calories and build lean muscle. It
promotes gains in hypertrophy strength
and endurance through the breakdown and
rebuilding of muscle tissue, says Alexander
Kaufman, personal trainer and founder of
P.E.P.P.E.R. tness in New York City.
Strength training is one of the best ways to
build a complete, balanced body and can
be done both with and without equipment.
Workouts should focus on adding both
exibility and strength. When working
without equipment, it can be hard to target
smaller muscles and isolate them like you
would at a gym, says Kaufman. Focusing
on compound movements will drive your
strength through the roof in all areas.
Try this workout created by Kaufman that
can be done almost anywhere. Each time
you do this workout, add two more reps to
each exercise to continue progression. Rest
30 seconds to one minute between exercises,
and repeat the whole circuit one to three
times through. Continue for six weeks.

to help you reach your goals, while
diet and exercise buddies can offer
you good, old-fashioned strength in
numbers. One of the main reasons
individuals train in groups is for the
extra support, continues Campbell.
They all encourage each other to
hnish each exercise down to the last
rep.
A Plan
No matter how you choose to get
healthy (no-carbs, clean eating,
joining a weight-loss group, etc.)
youve got to have a plan and stick
to it. Understanding what, when,
and how much to eat, as well as
specihcally what exercise plan to
follow will ultimately determine
success or failure, says Scott Herkes,
certihed htness nutrition specialist and

means of self-sabotage is setting a
goal with no clear path to success.
Patience
We all know how this works. The

term that holds negative connotations
for many. Instead, think of these
foods as fun, energizing or life-
prolonging. She recommends trying
one new energizing food per week
to add to your culinary repertoire
and keep your meal plans fresh and
exciting.

The goal is not to completely avoid
occasional slip-ups, but to avoid
berating yourself when they do
happen. Feelings of guilt can quickly
evolve into a complete shutdown
of your healthy lifestyle changes. I
have never had a client who didnt
fall off the wagon, so to speak, says
Alana Cabrero, RD, nutrition program
coordinator at The New York Health
& Racquet Club in New York City. My
advice is to savor the treat and then
hit the rest button. Dont let one slice
of pizza lead to a bucket of wings. You
can always hx it at the next meal." By

Over the past few years Ive had the opportunity to
photograph approximately 30 different covers for Max
Sports & Fitness magazine. In that time, we have been
privileged to see such a growth with the publication and
the features weve been able to take on and share with
you, our readers.
The inspiration for this feature came from looking
through all the previous cover shoots weve worked on
and a curiosity about where the careers have gone with
many of the talents who have been proled. We were
able to bring together six of our previous cover models for
a large group photo shoot in Arizona.
Included in the group was Tiffani Bachus, RD, who I
had the opportunity to work with on my rst ever cover
for MS&F. It was just a few months later I photographed
Kasie Rae, who has such a strong dynamic look and
appeal. We also brought back Gyda Loveres and Shandi
Hudson who shared the December 2011 cover, which
was part of the rst creative project I ever pitched to the
magazine entitled The Fitness Diversity project. Morgan
Trans cover was her return to shooting after a long health
recovery and was one of the edgier and more dramatic
covers weve done. Finally, we had Michelle Mozek,
who we photographed outside during a brutal heat wave
but yet her cover became an ADDY Award-winning cover.
It has been such an honor working with so many
outstanding talents throughout the years and to be able to
bring some of them back for this group shoot was a true
privilege. Next, nd out where these ladies are and what
they've been up to since their cover shoots.

Wall Balls
(Men use a 20-lb. medicine ball, women
a 14-lb. ball.) Use a wall that has a
10-foot mark from the hoor for men,
and an 8-foot mark for women. Start in
standing position, then drop into a front
squat and use an explosive hip drive to
push/throw the ball up to the mark on
the wall. Immediately drop back into a
front squat as you catch the ball back in
that position. That is one rep.
Note: You can vary the ball weight
depending on your training goals,
conditioning and strength.
Air Squats
Stand with your feet at a distance slightly
wider than your hips. Keep your weight on
your heels. Bend both knees so they come
out slightly over your feet. Hold your hands
out in front of you to help balance as you
lower your hips straight down. Your torso
should remain in a vertical position. Stand
back up, pushing your hips forward hrst.
That is one rep.
Push Press
Have bar racked with weights at your neck level, hands facing up, backs of arms
parallel with the ground. Slightly dip into a front squat. Come up and extend the
hips and legs, generatating an upward momentum. Once the bar is above your
head, your head comes forward as you fully extend hips, legs and arms.
That is one rep.

I have learned over the last
year that staying motivated and
determined is no easy task, but
then again nothing in life worth
having comes easy. You have to
make up your mind to give it your
all and never give up. You have to
dig deeper every day. That means
doing that extra rep when you're
exhausted, sticking to your diet
100 percent, making the right
choices one decision after another.
This all counts towards meeting
your goals. Plus, you never know
who's watching or looking at
you for motivation. The constant
thought of possibly letting someone
down was motivation enough for
me keep going that extra mile.
These are a few things that

Ingri DeGroote, 40, of Vancouver, WA was really good
at taking care of the people she loved. She had four young
daughters, regularly volunteered in her community and
church and worked as a caregiver for ill family and friends.
She worked hard to care for her family but was surprised
one day during a conversation with her new trainer when
she realized she didnt take good care of herself. I would
do all those things for my entire family but I wouldnt do
them for me, she said. Why wasnt I as important as my
family? Ingri had to learn to say no to others and yes to
herself.
Shocked by the disturbing epiphany that somehow taking
care of herself always ranked dead last on her impossible to
do list, Ingri decided that 2012 was going to be the start of
a strategic year of self care, a year of healing.
As a borderline diabetic who was 70 pounds overweight,
Ingri acknowledges today that she began this health
journey motivated to help her family but it became about
helping herself. She discovered the MaxForm Life Challenge
contest and according to her, it was the hrst thing she has
ever started and hnished just for her.
Working with Stacey England at Max Muscle Sports
Nutrition East Vancouver for her nutrition plan and
supplements, Ingri began taking control of her nutrition.
She admits that before her year of healing she would drink
Diet Coke for breakfast, would not even prepare a plate for
herself at lunch instead she would eat the kids' leftovers
and then overeat with a big heavy fried southern dinner.
Under Stacy's guidance as a Certihed Fitness Nutrition
Coach (CFNC), Ingri ate rolled oats, berries, sweet
potatoes, egg whites, avocados, chicken, hsh, vegetables,
cottage cheese and occasionally a Quest bar! She ate six
small meals a day and began to see food as nutrients and
fuel to get me where I wanted to go, she said.
Ingri admitted that the biggest challenge she faced in
changing her lifestyle was choosing me and learning that
setting aside time for herself was OK. At hrst, ! felt like
! was being selhsh," she said. ! was totally depleted, !
couldnt give anymore, and I was just exhausted beyond
exhausted. I had to learn to step back and take care of
myself, she said.
It was her trainer who put it bluntly: I cant take care of

you once you leave here. You have to stay true to yourself.

Arpana Prasad, 33, of Portland, Oregon used an
unfortunate job loss in October 2012 and turned it into
a blessing in disguise. It was a chance to focus on me,
she said. ! was pretty devastated, overweight, not ht and
depressed.
It was Arpanas friend, Sanjana Pahalad-Mancuso,
franchisee of the Max Muscle Portland store who encouraged
Arpana to sign up for the 2013 MaxForm Life Challenge
contest and create a healthy goal to get motivated. Once
she started focusing on clean nutrition and incorporated
challenging workouts into her day, her body started to
respond and soon she began thinking what if I can? This is
when the real transformation began!
According to Arpana, something her hance, Josh Harrison,
said at the beginning of the challenge really stuck with her.
He said, This challenge starts in December and it ends in
June. June can come around and you can be the exact same
or you might feel a little better." Josh helped Arpana see that
she could do anything for seven months.
Sanjana designed a customized nutrition plan and Arpana
used the break in her career to focus on herself for once.
When you are working full time, it is hard to make it all ht,"
she said. This was a chance to focus on me.
Sanjana convinced Arpana that the MaxForm Life
Challenge would change her life, and it certainly did! As
Arpana focused on her healthy goal, she started feeling
better, and soon it became harder and harder to quit.
Instead of being something she had to do, the workouts
became something she wanted to do.
On Dec. 1 at a starting weight of 153 pounds and 33
percent body fat, Arpana started strategically approaching
her health and htness goals.
By the end of the challenge she weighed 117 pounds and
had reduced her body fat to 12 percent, far surpassing her
initial goal to get down to 125 pounds.
Arpana used Max Muscle products to supplement her
whole-food nutrition. Her favorites included High 5,

The hardest part of the challenge for Arpana was actually

even more noticeable than the physical changes. She began

and What if I train intensely today? and What if I eat
clean today?
Encouraged by her early success in the challenge, Arpana
took a bold step in April and hired trainer Noel Fuller, who
specialized in bodybuilding. It was a leap of faith but by
April, Arpana was already regularly thinking what if so she
was willing to step out of her comfort zone and admit she
wanted to look like one of the htness competitors she saw in
the magazines.
Arpana rehects that in October of 2012 she was a
wounded person. She doubted herself and didnt have a
goal to stay motivated. She was depressed and needed to
lose weight. By April 2013, she had the reins in her hand,
she was in control and she was determined to achieve her
very specihc goals. Life was on high octane!
By June 2013, Arpana had changed from the inside out.
She said, It doesnt even have to be a weight-loss goal, it
can be something else in life. If you want it, whatever it is,
do whatever it takes to get to the goal now. Stop using
excuses.

Losing weight tops many peoples list of things they want


when it comes to health, and cutting calories is often perceived
as a means to do that. It would be nice if weight maintenance
was as easy as a simple math equation, said Stephanie Easterly,
a registered dietician and Certied Wellness Coach at the
Scottsdale Healthcare Bariatric Center. While its important to
consider calories in versus calories out, its essential to look at the
quality of your calories and your bodys response to them.
Calories are not created equal. Have you ever eaten a
high-calorie, sugar-laden dessert and experienced the crash
that follows? Compare this to an equally high calorie meal
of avocados and lean meat cooked in healthy oils. Although
the calorie count might be equal, this doesnt account for the
hormonal and emotional effect the calories have on a person,

which can potentially trigger other healthy or unhealthy
physical or nutritional patterns.
Do calories matter? Of course they do. You cant consume
an excess of anything well beyond what your body expends
and expect to lose weight. However, of equal importance
is the quality of the calorie and the source from which its
derived.
Here are some important tips that will help you get the
most out of your calories.
EAT LOWEST CALORICALLY
DENSE FOODS FIRST
Low calorically dense foods provide fewer total calories and
greater nutrition in a larger volume of food, said Easterly.

AVOID CRAVINGS
The body adapts over time and it

options, expect an adjustment period.
When you expose yourself to empty
calories, your body will continue to crave
those nutritionally-lacking foods, leaving
you constantly searching and craving for
more with little to no long-term satiety,
said Easterly. Healthy whole foods
should account for at least 80 percent
of your choices daily. Over time, your
old cravings will subside and you will be
more inclined to want healthier options.

and alertness. Caffeine is also one of
the most studied stimulants and is

Paraxanthine, the primary
dimethylxanthine metabolite found in

in a 2002 issue of Medical Hypotheses
promote the idea that yohimbine is
a useful tool in the hght against fat
loss. As an alpha-2 antagonist, this
herb boosts lipolysis and serum FFA
levels during and post exercise. When
taken in moderate doses, yohimbine
accomplishes this without raising heart
rate, blood pressure or anxiety. Another
2006 study in Research and Sports
Medicine found that when yohimbine
was administered to soccer players in
doses of 20mg twice daily for 21 days,
post supplementation observation
showed a signihcant reduction in body
fat and a much lower level of body
fat mass versus a placebo group.
Yohimbine HCL is a purihed, standard
substance while yohimbe bark extract
may contain various amounts of the
active ingredient and may contain
hllers.
Synephrine. Bitter orange
extract (Citrus aurantium) contains
a potent fat burning ingredient in
the form of p-synephrine. This form
of synephrine has been proven to
exhibit a thermogenic effect on the
body by increasing Resting Metabolic
Rate (RMR). A 2011 study in the
International Journal of Medical Science
found that synephrine caused no rise
in resting heart rate or blood pressure.
The combination of a thermogenic
that does not raise heart rate or blood
pressure makes bitter orange extract
an extremely popular and effective
ingredient in many fat burners today.
Green Tea Extract. High levels
of catechins present in green tea
extract have been shown to help in
the reduction of body fat. Numerous

to be used as fuel. Studies remain
controversial on its effectiveness,
however. Although there is promise
that this amino may offer assistance
in burning mobilized fat, as well as
recovering from exercise due to its
glycogen-sparing effect, many studies
show no link to fat reduction. L-carnitine
can stave off fatigue and increase
oxygen efhciency during exercise,
leading to more effective workouts
and an increase in fat loss. L-carnitine
remains safe with no major known side
effects, however, so it may be an option
to assist in weight loss efforts.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid
(CLA). CLA has been shown to be a
potent ingredient in fat loss by assisting
the liver in fat metabolism. Many
studies have substantiated the claims
that this fatty acid assists in burning
white fat stores while enhancing lean
body mass. A 2012 study in the Lipids
in Health and Disease Journal published
results that both Omega 3 and CLA
enhance glycolytic, oxidative and overall
metabolism. Both ingredients also
greatly increase mitochondrial content,
proving that CLA and Omega 3 are a
great addition to a healthy diet and a
weight management plan.

It is well known that resistance
exercise training increases muscle
strength and size and evidence also
suggests that resistance training can
increase mitochondrial content and
decrease oxidative stress in older
adults. Recent ndings suggest that
fast-velocity resistance exercise may
be an effective intervention for older
adults to enhance muscle power
and functional capacity. In addition
to exercise, creatine monohydrate,
milk-based proteins and essential
fatty acids all have biological effects
which could enhance some of the
physiological adaptations from
exercise training in older adults.

This present study tested the ability of milk-derived casein


micelles to deliver biologically active concentrations of
polyphenols to colon cancer cells. Epigallocatechin gallate
(EGCG), the major catechin found in green tea, was used
as the model molecule, as it has been shown to have
anti-proliferative activity on colon cancer cells. Scientists
at the University of Guelph studied a specialized cell line of
colon cancer cells to determine the cytotoxicity and proliferation
behavior when exposed to free EGCG compared with that
of nanoencapsulated EGCG in casein micelles of skim
milk. Researchers found that the EGCG-casein complexes
were able to decrease the proliferation of cancer cells,
demonstrating that bioavailability may not be reduced by
the nanoencapsulation. Although more research is needed,
scientists concluded that milk products may be used as an
appropriate platform for delivery of bioactive compounds.
