The Paltinu Dam The Paltinu dam is situated in Prahova County, on the downstream of Daftana river and its

confluence with Sycamore Valley, the keys called The Covers. Paltinu Lake is a reservoir for drinking water, spread on a length of 3 km, offering a breathtaking view. Both banks offer favorable conditions for the settlement of camping and holidays cabins. Located in a outstanding mountain settings, Doftana basin and river Doftana lies at the confluence of the creek Paltinoasa and Secarina. Situated at an altitude of 650 m, Paltinoasa Lake occupies an area of 215 ha. Paltinu dam is located in Prahova County , on the downstream of Doftana River valley at its confluence with Sycamore Valley ,in the keys named La Tocile. Because of the geomorphological difficult conditions of the site, there was adopted the version of a concrete arch dam with double curvature point perimeter . This solution involved the creation of a foundation base extended on the left with a wing dish. This solution implied the creation of an extended foundation on the left bank with a wing dish. This socket allows a balancing section where the dam itself is executed and allow better retrieval modules of the rocks from the two slopes. Also, the base permits a better adaptation of the local geological conditions, by filling the empty spots with alternative rock. The foundation soil was enhanced with a veil of concrete milk. Between the dams left bank and the parabolic slope was performed a concrete abutment, which contributes to a better cooperation with the slope of the dam. The dam has a height of 108 m above the foundation, the dam cres elevation is at 654 m above the see level. The total length of the dam crest is 455. For the dam stabilizations additional work was implied by strengthen both slopes with prestressing anchor. In spite of all this work, during the first fill of the pond, large infiltrations were detected which exceeded 150 l/sec and movement of the spring contact structure and the wing central dish. As a result, they performed various additional work including supplementation veil seal drainage system amplification and downstream side cover left slope with concrete blocks which increments 6 8 m deep with anchored pretensionate cables. With all these modifications, the infiltrations stopped and the behavior of the dam were in the corresponded limits.

The works for Paltinu dam started in 1966 and the dam was opened in 1971. A second phase of consolidation has been executed between 1976 1982. The Paltinu dam, serves mainly for drinking and industrial water in Campina and Ploiesti countys. In the alternative, the dam also provide water to irrigate 9000 ha in the Prahova county. The Paltinu dam is included in the water management system which also includes the following works: The Voila dam on the Daftana river Water treatment station at Voila Voila water supply pipe which serves to supply water do towns on the route The wells for groundwater abstraction in the Baicoi area Regularization of the Dambul river in the area of Ploiesti

The reservoir covers an area of 334 and has an average depth of 23.2 m From the given data average flowrate into the reservoir is 760m3/s = 2.11*1010 m3/year, and the average

suspended-sediment concentration is 90 mg/L = 0,090 kg/m3, therefore the average sediment load entering the reservoir is given by: sediment load = inflow rate * suspended sediment concentration = 2.40 * 105 *0,090 = 0.21*106 kg/year The area of the reservoir is 334km2 = 3.34*108 m2 and the average depth of the reservoir is 23.2 m, therefore the reservoir storage capacity is given by Storage capacity = area of reservoir * average depth = 3.34*108 m2 * 23.2 m = 7.74 * 109 m3 and Storage capacity = 7.74*109 m3/0.21*106 m3 =3.58 *103

Based on this ratio of storage capacity to annual inflow (=3.58), the percent of sediment tapped in the reservoir is estimated as 84%. Since the average sediment load delivered by the river to the reservoir is kg/year, the rate at which sediment is accumulating in the reservoir is 0,21*1,40*1010 kg/year. Since the bulk density of the sediment accumulating at the bottom of the reservoir is 1500 kg/m3, and the area of the reservoir is 1500 kg/m3, and the area of the reservoir is 425 km2 = 4.25*108 m2, the rate at which sediment volume is accumulating is given by: Sediment volume rate = sediment trap rate = 1,24*1010 kg/year /1500 kg/m3 = 8.26* 106 m3/year

Since the plan are of the reservoir is 350 km2 = 3,50*108 m2, the rate of sediment accumulation on the bottom of the reservoir is given by: Rate of sediment accumulation = sediment volumeaccumulation rate = 8.26* 106 m3/year / 3,50*108 m2 = 0,0236 m/year

At this rate it will take approximatuvely 1000 years for the reservoir capacity to decrease by 10% due to sediment accumulation. Since 85% of the incoming sediment is trapped by the reservoir , and the sediment load delivered by the rivers to the reservoir is 0.826*1010 kg/year, the sediment load released from the reservoir is 0.826*1010 kg/year, the sediment load released from the reservoir is (1-0,87)( 0.826*1010) kg/year = 1.14*109 kg/year. Assuming that the average flowrate of water released from the reservoir is equal to the average flowrate entering the reservoir (= 8,26*1010 m3/year), then sediment concentration downsteam = sediment load released = 1.14*109 kg/year / 8.26*1010 m3/year = 0,133 kg/m3
