1st Female Auctioneer
Let me tell you about my worst auction I ever did.. that turned into the best one ever...
Im pregnant my wife of 45 days tells me (it was December, 1 1989 when we married). I couldnt have been happier, new wife, now Im gonna be a dad life was good. About a week later she got sick, really sick. On February 6, 1990, they told me she had inoperable cancer. I lost her and the baby the next day. Needless to say I was devastated. I wont even attempt to describe the hurt. For several years I tried to cope. The only times I had anything close to happy times is when

I would donate my time to help cancer patients. I started raising money for sick kids. I went to Nashville auction school in 2004 and then via my auction school education, the help I could then offer was expanded thru the benefit auctions I conducted. I must admit I got pretty good at raising money using the auction method. I probably conducted 100 auctions over the years for different childrens groups. I was on the path to happiness once again using of all things... the auction industry. One particular group I helped was a cancer research group. They were a group of Scientists and business professionals that were committed to battling cancer thru education. I thought... battling cancer thru education sounded silly. But once I looked into it, the process was very unique. Imagine cancer patients being able to access the best minds in the world thru manuals if you will, that these scientists wrote describing each particular kind of cancer in plain understandable terms. These manuals described the latest treatments... medicines... clinical trials around the world that opened up doors for cancer patients that they had no clue of before. They actually GIVE THESE AWAY to cancer patients. I was hooked. This sounded like my kind of program to get involved in. I pitched them ( the board members of this non profit ) an idea I had. Lets do an auction to raise money for the program... but lets invite all the scientists from their group to do a question and answer session with the crowd before the auction. Imagine current cancer patients actually being able to ask the best scientists in the world questions about the current research thats being done. How inspiring would that be for

cancer patients to have one on one time with such important people. Well, the board agreed, I started to plan. As I worked on the project, it started to gain momentum. I got calls from cancer patients around the country that were planning on coming. I was very excited about helping so many people at one time. I rented the Hagerstown Md Speedway for the event with my own money. I rented tents, 500 chairs, I had food prepared for the many guests I assumed were coming. I got several hotels to donate rooms for our visiting scientists. I was donating money I really didnt have to make this work, but I felt it was worth it if I could help someone. I advertised on Auctionzip, radio, & in the newspaper.. The local TV News even did

a story on it the week before. I was overwhelmed with how big this grew from when I had started it. The big day came... It was a Saturday morning. The scientists were there from across the country. The caterers had this big display of food out I had purchased. I had the donated auction items over in the appropriate area. I had several hundred phone calls between Wednesday and Friday from people that were coming... I actually had the rental store ready to bring more tables and chairs if we needed them. But we didnt... No one showed up. I checked all my ads thinking something was wrong... the ads were right... NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON SHOWED UP. I got physically sick, I actually went behind a tent and openly wept at the thought that no one showed up for this
incredible opportunity to meet and ask questions with all these cancer researchers. Ive drawn 200 person crowds with a weeks notice doing benefit auctions and here I plan this for 3 months and not one person shows up? I wiped the tears from my eyes, and as I started to go back into this monstrosity of a tent I rented to at least thank the scientists for coming I saw a car in the parking lot. ONE SINGLE CAR. As I looked closer, there was someone in the car leaning over the steering wheel. I approached the car and lightly tapped on the drivers window. A middle aged woman whose hair was matted down from tears; she looked like she had been crying for days. She rolled down her window. I asked her if she was ok. She apologized and slowly told me, through bouts of crying, that while driving by, she saw my signs out on the street reading cancer conference in front of the race track. Seeing no one in the parking lot she assumed it was over and that she had missed it. I asked her if she had cancer. She replied that while she didnt her husband did. I asked her what kind. She responded with what I perceived was a 100 syllable word. I had her repeat it slowly so I could write it down. She said the doctors gave her husband no hope and she just didnt know what else to do. I begged her to stay just for a few minutes so I could introduce her to my scientist friends who could maybe point her in the right direction. She agreed. I all but ran to that big beautiful tent and asked my scientist friend, have you ever heard of this kind of cancer? I showed him the notepad I had scribbled the name of this mans cancer. He looked at it and then at me... Is this some kind of joke? he asked me. No sir, why? I replied (I point-

ed at her lone car in the parking lot) and told him her story. He told me that less then 20 people in the world had that kind of cancer... and that the scientist in the big bow tie eating all my shrimp was trying to put together a FDA study of a medicine, he was convinced would help these people. But he needed ONE more patient for the study. Theres your one person over there I pointed. Those scientists went over, introduced themselves, and I watched as they sat in that poor womans car for over 2 hours discussing ways to help her husband. I never believed in miracles. But how does someone who desperately needs something find exactly what they need; from the only person on the planet (that scientist) that has the ability to help them, by chance?

Later as I thought about the days events, What if a thousand people showed up? What if 2000 showed up like I wanted? That one woman would have been just another face lost in the crowd seeking something she could never find. While I wont use this forum to preach. God knows what hes doing. You might think youve failed at things. But give it time. Beautiful flowers dont grow the day they are planted. Sometimes we dont get to see our successes. Sometimes we only choose to see our failures. Do your best, do what you can and hell handle the rest. My auction brought in not one dollar that day... But it was in fact my most successful auction Ive ever done. I love being an auctioneer.
