Programs are designed to provide excitement and education. Discrepant Event Demonstrations make students wonder how and why the world around them works as it does. A wide variety of Physics, Chemistry and Natural Science demos bring the level of interest to an exciting climax. Fun With Food Early Literacy & Nutrition Activities Carianne Short, ESSDACK Session 2 This workshop is designed to expand your comfort level and help you discover new ideas of how to connect nutrition and literacy with the children in your care. Green and Growing Establishing the Roots for Future Literacy Success Jeanine Phillips, Fundamental Learning Session 1 This presentation focuses on the research published in Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children (Snow, et.al.) that has established a road-map to successfully develop language and pre-literacy skills appropriately for children, ages 3-5. The critical concepts of phonological awareness, oral language development, dialogical reading, print awareness, and letter identification will be introduced and reinforced with fun interactive activities you can share with your preschoolers. Hands on Science Alyssa Kester, Exploration Place Session 3 This session will offer activities and information for hands-on science activities that are easy to conduct with young children and that are easy on the budget. Participants will become familiar with simple, everyday items that can be used to spark the interest of young children as they learn basic scientific principals. Infant Massage to Promote Bonding & Attachment Margot Breckbill Session 3 The power of touch can have many benefits for both the infant and the caregiver. Good touch stimulates healthy physical development and promotes healthy brain development. When a parent or caregiver learns these skills, it can empower them to feel more competent in interpreting the needs of the infant.

Opening the World of Possibilities: Reading and Writing with Digital Media Sheila Shaw, KPTS Channel 8 Session 1 Wondering how to incorporate media into your daily interactions with children? Media has the potential to overcome barriers so all children, regardless of circumstances, can explore the world around them and develop a love of learning! This session is designed for child care center teachers and family care providers to better utilize digital media - primarily television and online resources available from PBS - in assisting young children with the tools needed as they develop literary and reading skills. Precious Cargo: Getting Children There and Back Safely Tammie Henson & Leanne Kilmer, Safe Kids McPherson County Session 3 This session will be an overview on child passenger restraint systems, with a look at state laws on transporting children. We will also discuss what to do if you are involved in a car crash. You will practice hands-on car seating positioning. During this class you will have an opportunity to set up an appointment for customized car seat plans on a one on one basis. Science for the Young Child Carrie Tiemeyer, The Bug Lady Session 2 Teachers will get hands-on learning science for use in their classrooms. All activities are age appropriate and done with household items. They will learn how to make science fun and engaging for their students. Several science resources will be provided so teachers can build on curriculum learned. The Bug Lady: Educating Children Through Animals and Insects Carrie Tiemeyer, The Bug Lady Session 1 Come share an amazing time with The Bug Lady. She has animals ranging from Charlotte the tarantula to Tucker the Amazon Parrot. The Bug Lady shares the benefits of having animals, insects, and nature. Come and watch feeding demos with different kinds of lizards. Learn about habitats, diets, and the easiest and least expensive ways to maintain animals in your classroom. Many animals & insects can be handled. Its a fun time for all - especially for the animals...they love the attention!

The Many Cs in Creating Partnerships for Children Amy Lawson, Texas DFPS Session 2 Its all about working together for our children learn about the critical skills in developing partnerships with parents, surveyors, and the community including collaboration, crucial conversations, customer service, conflict resolution, cooperation, and community building. The Outdoor Classroom Neva Thiessen, Botanica Session 3 Participants will engage in interactive activities using natural materials that are age appropriate and available in city parks and other outside areas. This will include classification, description, and creative expression. Included in the training are ways to engage families in outside activities that explore their natural environment in area neighborhoods. Understanding Early Childhood Mental Health Heather Barnett, Child Behavior Specialists Session 3 Upon the completion of this professional development event participants will have a better understanding of early brain development, become familiar with different temperament styles that may present in early childhood behavior. Discussions will focus on external factors that contribute to healthy children and what impact negative factors have on healthy development. What I Learned on My Worst Day Amy Lawson Texas DFPS Session 3 It only takes a moment for things to go terribly wrong, especially when something is out of the normal, daily routine. Learn how everyday miscommunications, distractions, disruptions, and caregiver complacency create risk to children. Learn about risk assessment in child care to keep children safe. What is SPD and How Do I Know if a Child Has It? Kris Dickinson, The TheraPlay Spot Session 2 Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) occurs in 1 out of 20 children, where they have significant difficulties in one or more of the 7 senses (the 5 main ones plus 2 significant others). Children may be labeled by teachers as quirky, picky, clumsy, or rough-n-tumble. With help, children and their caregivers can learn to manage SPD symptoms.

Member Discounts:
The cost for Growing with Children is reduced for those who have a current 2013-2014 membership with Child Start. The cost for Directors Chair is reduced for those who have a current 2013-2014 membership with the Early Childhood Directors Organization. Child Start Professional Development Membership credits do not apply to this conference.
Refunds:
Sorry, there are no refunds for either Growing With Children or Directors Chair. If you are wanting to add a different name to an existing registration, you must do so by 2/28/14.
