2. Data Base

For the project was prepared a database of similar vessels in order to check if the calculations are performed well, and also to compare the ship found with the existing ones, table 1 present the data base collected from similar ships from the available literature.

3. Calculation of the required space for tanks

In order to proceed with the general arrangement, it is necessary to know the required volume for the diesel oil, fresh water and hold. The input data given is used to calculate the volumes.

3.1. Calculation of the Hold Volume

The required hold volume is a function of the daily capture and the storage type. The daily capture is given as 1000 Kg. The maximum time spent at sea is given as 24 hours. Therefore the maximum capture is going to be 1 ton. With the ice needed to store the captured fish, the required volume will be multiplied by 2 ending up at 2.2 m3 (with a 10 percent margin).

Hold Calculations Hold Volume Required 2.200 [m^3]

3.2. Calculation of the Fuel Volume

The average fuel required depends on the engine power installed and the average fuel consumption. To determine the power necessary a study of power calculation using Oortmersen method was done. This Method is used to power prediction of small ships, like fishing vessels. And use the following empirical formulation.

Where: C1,C2,C3 and C4 are Oortmersen constants, Fn is the Froude number, Rn is the Reynold number.

FISHING VESSELS

MEAN 2013-2014

For the present ship the values of the constants were: c1 c2 c3 c4 0.001335 0.227676 -0.14406 0.068195

And the value predicted for the Power was: . Power Power 118317.1 [W] 158.668 [HP]

The engine is statistically chosen to be 205 HP, because commercial issues . This engine gives 25 % of additional power that can be used for handling equipment. This leads to a requirement of 175 / grams / hr. The power of the engine is for 24 hours, 205 HP leads to (175x205x24)=0.8 [tons] (with 10 percent safety margin). The average density for diesel is 0.85 kg/l and therefore the requirement for diesel volume is 0.774 m3. To avoid charging everyday fuel, we design the fuel tanks for two voyages. Diesel Volume Required Diesel With %10 Margin Diesel for 2 Voyages 0.703 [m^3] 0.774 [m^3] 1.547 [m^3]

3.3. Calculation of the Required Fresh Water Volume

The required fresh water is 75 liters per crew/day. The total volume with %10 margin ends up being 0.413 m3. Fresh Water Needed Fresh Water With %10 Margin 0.375 [m^3] 0.413 [m^3]

4. The General Arrangement

Since most of the Gill netters concerned are small and as they probably use more than one type of gear, there are considerable limitations on the deck equipment and working deck layout which may be adopted. Many gillnet boats are not decked at all, and are simply open vessels adopted to enable them to work the gear in question. Small decked gill netters can have their wheelhouse either aft or forward, in this section briefly explains the decisions taken.

4.1. Superstructure and the Living spaces

The crew consists of 4 people and the captain. The captains cabin is on the deck next to the bridge of commander. This leaves 4 crew to be placed on the living spaces. As the beds needs to be closer to the center of floatation for safety reasons (smaller accelerations). This has been the starting point for the living space design. The bathroom is placed on the deck, because the limited space, it is useful because has a door open to the deck, it mean that it can used during fishing. On the upper deck the captain has his own cabin along with the navigation room. The objective with the navigation room i to give a vision of the net while the ship is fishing. There is an emergency exit to the deck as required.

4.2. The Machinery Space

4.2.1. Engine Room The engine is chosen to be a Caterpillar model 3056 with 205HP. The engine is chosen to be placed at the middle of the ship. This make possible to use the rest of the space for the cargo hold and makes it easier to place the shaft. The angle for the shaft is 3 degrees.

4.3. The Deck

Space on deck is required on the deck for the fishing gear, in this case Gillnets. Therefore the deck is equipped with handling equipment. There are a drum to roll the net it is placed at the middle of the ship, there is another crane placed right after the superstructure which will be used to place the boxes of fish in the cargo hold. The important thing is to have enough space to store the net, have easy access to all equipment and to have enough space to avoid any accidents.

4.4. The Tanks

The diesel tanks are placed as close as possible to the engine as that is where itll be needed, in this case at the sides of the machinery space. The fresh water is placed at the aft peak making use of the space that cant be used according to the regulations.

MEAN 2013-2014

4.5. The Cargo Hold

The cargo hold is placed at the aft of the ship. The important thing is to have enough space for the cargo. The cargo hold also needs to be accessible and which imposes certain shape limitations. The cargo is also box shaped which needs to be kept in mind. This will create certain loss of space from the given shape so the cargo hold needs to have enough margins to meet all requirements.

5. The Final Calculated Tank Volumes

The tank volumes are calculated using rhino 3D, after modeling the tanks. The final volumes are presented in table 2.

From the 3D model (Rhinoceros) Diesel Volume Real Fresh Water Volume Real Hold Volume Real 3.40 [m^3] 2.4 [m^3] 12.61 [m^3]

6. Conclusion

The project has presented the general arrangement of a Gill netter with the given requirements. In order to allow better space, the superstructure was enlarged. The Gill netter seiner has the superstructure forward allowing more space at the deck to work with. The project has been very useful for understanding the general structure of the fishing vessels.
