About Us
Elutec is a new University Technical College for East London and Essex for 14 - 19 year olds looking to specialise in engineering or design
Our Pledge
Elutec is one of a breed of new academies focused on providing technical education that meets the needs of modern employers.! Offering technical courses and work-related learning, combined with broader academic studies in English, Mathematics and Sciences, Elutec will prepare students for exciting careers. Located on a world-class business and education campus in Rainham, Elutecs specialism will be manufacturing, engineering and product design. We have high aspirations for all our students and believe that we can develop young people who will have the capability to influence the UKs industry. Elutec will open in September 2014 with 160 Year 10 students starting their GCSEs and 160 Year 12 students starting A Levels.! We are taking applications now for both year groups for full time courses starting in September 2014.! In many ways we function like a school on a day-to-day basis, except we offer a more specialist workspace and curriculum alongside GCSEs and A Levels. Our pledge is to equip every student who successfully completes their studies at Elutec with the skills and qualifications to give them the opportunity to progress to one of the following:

Career Pathways
Students at Elutec will develop a firsthand insight into the challenges faced in modern industry. By partnering successful businesses, Elutec will show students and their parents how a technical focused education leads to great career opportunities through a major university or leading employer. Elutec students will have developed the fundamental skills of logical thinking, problem solving and strong numeracy. They will be able to express their ideas and views clearly, confidently and concisely and will have learnt how to persuade and negotiate. Their interaction with partners will develop commercial awareness through understanding the wider environment in which organisations operate. What does all this mean for Elutec students career pathways? It means that our students will be highly desirable to all sectors of industry whether they choose an apprenticeship, employment with training or higher education. Engineering graduates may specialise in a range of engineering and design professions. In additional to the more commonly known such as civil, mechanical, automotive and chemical, engineers can specialise in broadcasting, medical engineering, prosthetics and sports; the list is endless. Engineering graduates also follow careers in architecture, IT, banking, finance, commercial management, law, teaching and marketing. In fact, they are amongst the highest paid graduates; second only to medicine, dentistry and veterinary degrees. Demand
Elutec is situated in the heart of the Thames Gateway which stretches along the Thames Estuary from London Docklands to Southend in Essex and Sheerness in Kent.! The Thames Gateway is home to 3,275 manufacturing businesses including a wide range of large manufacturers such as Alcatel Lucent, Coca-Cola, Honeywell and Tate & Lyle.
Elutecs purpose is simple: to give its students the best possible advantage and start to their careers when they leave.!
In addition, the Port of London handles over 45 million tonnes a year, making it the second largest port in the UK and one of the worlds leading ports for international shipping.! This status will be significantly enhanced when London Gateway, the 1.5 billion development of the worlds most technically advanced container port and a new a major new logistics park, opens in December 2013.! All of this makes the Thames Gateway a major employer of skilled technicians and engineers, and the provision and increased supply of a workforce with the right technical skills and attitudes is crucial to its success and growth.
The National Employers Skills Survey 2009 and recent surveys undertaken by the sponsors show that there are significant skills shortages within the Thames Gateway region and over 25% of vacancies are due to technical skills shortages. Clearly, there is significant demand for technical skills from employers in the region. There is also a keen interest in getting these skills from local young people.
However, the regional data and evidence from interviews and surveys conducted by Elutec indicate a serious and sustained shortage of technical skills in the region.

Curriculum
Key Stage 4
Students in Years 10 and 11 will complete a number of projects designed collaboratively between Elutecs industrial partners and the awarding body OCR. In each project students will work in teams to solve real problems faced by industry. They will be supported through this challenging work by the partners and the Elutec teaching team and will present their findings to senior executives from the partner industries. The work that each individual student produces will meet the criteria for up to 4 GCSE qualifications in engineering design, manufacture, practical electrics and mechanics, electronics and control systems. Students will also study core GCSEs in English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ICT, Business and Product Design. All students will follow a course in modern foreign languages and some will study for GCSE German. What is unique about the curriculum at Elutec is that the core subjects will not be taught in isolation. This means that every lesson that a student attends will be linked to the engineering project they are completing. For example, during Year 10, students will be working on an engineering project designing and making pistons and fuel pumps for an engine. Within this project they will investigate the properties of suitable materials and then select the most appropriate for the manufacture of their piston and pump. At the same time in Chemistry they will be studying how the selected materials will react with different chemicals such as fuel for the pump, anti-freeze and coolant. In Physics they will be looking at the internal structure of those materials, discovering how the atoms react under different forces and
Curriculum
Elutec is an entirely new and ambitious college for the East London area. We are working in partnership with UCL and leading employers, such as Ford, to ensure that we deliver a curriculum fit for the 21st Century:
Provide a curriculum that leads to degree courses for the more academic and to employer apprentice schemes for those who prefer hands on work. Operate from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm to get students used to the hours of work in industry. Provide compulsory extracurricular activities to teach leadership and team working.

temperature. Their maths work will be based on space, volume, velocity and acceleration and they will use the data they have generated in engineering to produce graphs and charts in maths. In biology they will have learnt that biological solutions are often the simplest and most affective and so, in designing engineering structures, they should learn from the structures of animals, their skeletons and natural reactions to chemicals. English will see the students preparing

for the presentation of their findings and the sentence structure in their reports. Finally, in their modern foreign language, students will be learning vocabulary relevant to the project. By studying in this integrated way, Elutec students will never ask why they are learning a particular topic. By understanding the relevance of their learning, Elutec students will be better motivated, better informed and better prepared for academic success. In addition to the academic curriculum, all students will undertake Physical Education, Enterprise Education, Careers Education, Religious Education and PSHCE (personal, social, health and citizenship education). Students will also undertake a week of work experience each year which will develop further their employment skills.
employers will be looking for their next recruits. Most students will be expected to take additional AS and A levels to complement their engineering course. In its first year Elutec will offer A levels in Maths, Physics, ICT and Product Design. Other A levels may be offered if there is sufficient demand. All students in the sixth form will receive careers education and guidance to support them in choosing the correct pathway for the future, be it higher education, an advanced apprenticeship, or other employment. In addition, students will undertake Physical Education, Enterprise Education and PSHCE. Students will also undertake a week of work experience each year and, if appropriate, will be encouraged to pursue further work experience as part of their regular curriculum.
Extension Activities
In the sixth form all students will study an advanced course in Engineering which will give them the equivalent of two A levels. As in Key Stage 4, this course will be taught around engineering challenges and Elutecs partners will be involved in developing and delivering the curriculum. Sixth form students will be working with potential employers and
Sixth Form
Students in all year groups will undertake extension activities one afternoon a week. This is a great opportunity for them to mix with their peers from other year groups and work on projects or partake in sports and hobbies, some of which they may never have had the opportunity to try before.
