Fayette Eagles Avenge An Earlier BBC Setback By Turning Away Stryker, 44-29
By Timothy Kays THE VILLAGE REPORTER splashed two of his three treys in the opening stanza, and combined with a bucket from Cox and pair of field goals each from Chandler Sanford and Jerad Seiler, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead that would not be threatened the remainder of the game. So tough was the speed of the Eagles' defense, that Ruffer would not hit his first field goal until the third period. He got off plenty of shots, but every one was well defended by at least one Purple and Gold shadow. Biddix led all scorers with 11 points for the 7-5 / 3-2 Eagles, with Seiler finishing with 10 points and Sanford 9. Cox added 4 points, Burkholder and Bates had 3 points apiece, and Grant Schaffner and Skylar Lantz each had 2 points. Ruffer was held far below his average at 10 points, and Clingaman and Beamont each finished with 6 for the 5-9 / 3-2 Panthers. Brandon Woolace and Austin Grisier closed out the Stryker scoring with 3 points apiece. SCORING BY QUARTER: Fayette 16 6 8 14 - 44 Stryker 8 6 5 10 - 29

engine that shut down the high powered Cadet attack, dominating both ends of the court and recording a game high 16 points on the night, while teammates Dylan Hutchinson and Branden Turner turned up the heat with 10 each in the game. But the hero of the night for the visiting North Central Eagles was 5 10 Junior Josh Sawyer. Trailing by 2, 51-53 with 13 ticks remaining on the game clock in the face of a ferocious Cadet defensive effort, Sawyer found an small opening in Hilltops pressure front and took the pass, slightly inside the three ring; taking a calm step back into three range, and nailing the go ahead shot. Following Sawyers 3, the Cadets took the ball down court but a costly turnover put the ball back in the Eagles hands with 8 remaining. The Eagles Hutchison then was fouled on the inbound pass, and he hit 1 of 2 to bring the final to 55-53. For North Central on the night, Legacys 16 led the way, while Turner and Hutchisons 10 were clutch for the comeback. Sawyer had 7 in the game, going 1 for 1 from the three range, while Clayton Ferguson added 7 as well. Also on the board for North Central, Jordan Reeves had 3 and Ethan Douglas chipped in 2. PUTTING SOME TIME IN ... Wauseon freshman Carter Bzovi saw a few minutes of varsity action during the big win against Delta. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com) By Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER WAUSEON - 1-31-14 - For the second time in two weeks the Wauseon Indians and Delta Panthers went head to head. This time around, however, it counted in NWOAL play and Wauseon secured the win 78-63. The Wauseon win logjams NWOAL standings with Archbold, Delta and Wauseon all at 4-1. The Indians improved to 11-4 overall and Delta falls to 10-3. Over the first 4:30 of the opening quarter the Panthers were a team on a mission taking a quick 9-2 lead. Delta led as much as 13-5 as was reminiscent of the first game the two teams played last week when the Panthers had a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. This time around the first quarter ended 17-13 in the Panthers favor as Kris Boysel scored two baskets to narrow Delta's lead. Justin Callahan opened the second quarter with a three-point goal as the Panthers were quickly back up by seven. The next two offensive possessions for Wauseon, Noah Castle, who only scored three points on the night, had two great assist passes to Jacob Newlove and that brought the Indians back to within 2017. After a Scott Garlinger miss, Boysel grabbed the rebound and was a man possessed as he nailed a three-pointer to tie the game for the first time 20-20 at the 5:59 mark. The teams traded baskets to keep the game in a deadlock. The game was tied for a third time when Corry Byers got an assist from Boysel. Delta took a short lead on a Bailey Monroe bucket, but again it was Boysel who answered that with his second three-point shot putting the Indians back up 30-29. Castle fouled Garlinger, but the senior missed his first of a one and one foul shots. Newlove was able to score for the Indians with the Panthers answering back at the first half buzzer with a shot by Andrew Stickley as the Indians held a close 32-31 advantage at the half. Delta came out charged up in the third quarter and connected for five straight points to go on top 36-32. A three-point goal by Monroe was immediately answered by Byers as it was again a one-point difference. The game remained a two point gap up to 44-42 in favor of the Indians. This was the point of the game that the Indians took the momentum and never took their foot off the gas the rest of the way. A three by Byers, followed by another three by Alec Lillich put the Tribe up for good at 50-42. They continued the assault with a bucket by Byers off a feed from Boysel to go up 10 points as the third quarter came to an end. During the third quarter Garlinger was charged with technical foul as he steamrolled into a set Noah Castle. He handled the call by showing much emotion and was given the foul by the official. That seemed to be a turning point along with the backto-back threes by Wauseon that took Delta completely away from their game the rest of the night. The fourth quarter belonged to the Indians who scored 26 points over the last eight minutes to Delta's 21 points. But the night belonged to the trio of Kris Boysel (27 points), Corry Byers (23 points), and Jacob Newlove (20 points). The Indians take their show on the road Friday when they travel to Patrick Henry for a tilt with the 2-11 Patriots.

For the Hilltop Cadets in the first half, all cylinders were clicking and teammates Quinn Smith and Miklo Abner were dropping in threes, building what seemed to be an insurmountable lead going into the locker room at the half up by 19, 35-16. The dynamic Cadet teammates combined for 8 three pointers early in the game. But after the intermission, North Central hit the court determined to close the gap, and in dramatic fashion, they did! Indians Grab Win Against Delta 56-55

Wymer converted for the Panthers. Her shot was matched by a Richer shot for Wauseon and the Indians continued to clink to a onepoint lead 8-7 with 2:19 remaining in the opening stanza. Another Wymer make put the Panthers back up in the opening quarter's seesaw battle . Koenig connected for a three-point goal to put the Tribe up 11-9. But a conventional three-point play by Wymer gave the advantage back once again to the Panthers. The quarter ended with a Sariah Yackee desperation shot that fell short and the Panthers were up 12-11. The Indians found the net on their first two possessions to start the second quarter. Koenig scored on a put-back from a Lexi Lane miss and Blaylock connected on one of two foul shots as the Tribe went back on top 14-12. But it did not take Mattimore long to tie the game back up at the 6:05 mark. Yackee responded to the tied game with a three-pointer, then it was Frank and her newfound offensive game with a 12 foot jumper that gave the Indians a five point advantage at 19-14. But the ever present Wymer closed the gap to 19-17 with her second conventional three point play. It was Frank again that answered Wymer with a bucket. Then it was Wymer's turn to answer with a basket and it was still a two-point Wauseon advantage 21-19. The game was tied after Wauseon committed their first turnover and Delta's Abbie Harris took advantage to deadlock the game again 21-21 with 3:18 remaining in the first half. Another timely three-pointer from Koenig and a bucket from freshman Kylie Archibeque gave the Indians their biggest lead at 27-21. The Indians responded on another Panthers' error as Koenig scored to expand the Indians run to 8-0. Then she followed that shot up with two made free throws as Wauseon cracked open a 10 point lead before Delta finally scored again on a bucket from Green to make it 31-23 with 1:04 left. The half ended after a Wymer made free throw as the Indians went into the locker room with a 3124 lead. The teams exchanged baskets to start the second half. After two Koenig makes from the foul line, Wymer responded with a bucket. Bri Raab sank a nice three-point shot next for the Panthers. But as was happening most of the evening, the Indians responded with a three-pointer from Richer to maintain a seven point advantage at 36-29. After a Delta turnover it was Sally Frank again on a dish from Richer giving Wauseon a 38-29 lead. Haley Shindorf made two foul shots after a foul by Yackee. A Mattimore miss was boarded by Frank. Koenig completed one of her patented drives that resulted in a foul on Ravyn Mitchell. Koenig sank both freebees

Lady Locos Downed By Evergreen

MONTPELIER 1/30/2014The Lady Vikings of Evergreen took down the Lady Locomotives of Montpelier in NWOAL action, with the Vikings taking home a 53-32 win. It was a poor night on the offensive end by Montpelier, only getting 16 percent of the field goals that they attempted to fall, making it difficult to keep up with Evergreen. The Vikings established a lead early, owning a 14-10 advantage after one quarter of action. The struggling Loco offense was unable to find any relief in the second quarter, as Montpelier was only able to score three points in the period. By the time halftime came, Evergreen had grown their lead to 24-13. The Lady Locos would be unable to cut in to the Viking lead in the second half, as Evergreen would outscore the Locomotives 16-11 in the third quarter, and 13-8 in the fourth, giving Evergreen the 53-32 victory over Montpelier. Hannah Blake was the Locomotives leading scorer with 12 points. and the Tribe continued maintaining the nine-point advantage. Richer had two more baskets and Delta made three foul shots before the offensively charged third quarter came to a close with the Indians up 45-39. The fourth quarter started out with each team committing a turnover. The Panthers began going on the attack. A Alexa Lauch make and a Wymer put-back closed the game to a 45-43 Wauseon lead. Koenig answered the call with another three pointer, but Wymer charged right back with a basket. Yackee was fouled by Mattimore. Sariah calmly sank both shots as the Indians kept their five point lead with 3:27 left in the game. After Koenig missed two foul shots, Wymer connected on two after a foul by Yackee. Wauseon then committed a turnover and Delta tied the game up at 5050 with a shot from, you guessed it, Wymer. Richer was then fouled by Wymer as she connected on both free throws at the 1:43 mark to give Wauseon the lead again at 52-50. The Panthers' never say die attitude was displayed as they tore off the next four points of the game. Wymer made one of two free throws and Raab sank another rainbow three to put the Panthers up 54-52 with 56.9 seconds left. Koenig came through with her third three point shot to put the Indians back up 55-54 with 11. 8 second left. After a double time out by Wauseon, the Panthers had one last chance under their own basket to claim the victory, but outstanding defense by the Tribe down the stretch allowed them to sneak away from the jungle with the win they needed. "I thought that this was a good team win for us. It's always tough to play at Delta and they have a number of weapons," Wauseon coach Ashley Oyer said. "Brigan Wymer is a great player and she's tough to stop. Every single kid stepped up and did something positive for us last night to help us get the win. We had four different people guarding Wymer throughout the game. We had different kids step up and hit key shots and different points throughout the game. They played a match-up zone, so we thought that we could use a post presence. When they helped on the drive, the back side was open and Sally Frank did a great job of being in the right place at the right time. She also had 12 rebounds for us."

The Cadet lead would expand in the second quarter, with Hilltop outscoring North Central 11-6 in the period. As the halftime buzzer sounded, Hilltop controlled a 21-13 lead. The third quarter is when almost all doubt would be eliminated. Even though Hilltop only shot 32 percent from the field in the contest, the Cadets would control the glass, out-rebounding North Central by a huge 37-19 margin. The extra possessions that the Cadets were able to bring down would help them to go on to outscore North Central 19-4 in the third quarter, and move to a 40-17 lead at the end of the third quarter of action. Although the Eagles offense would be able to score 15 points in the fourth and final quarter, the Cadet lead would grow once again, with Hilltop putting up 18 more points on the scoreboard, sealing a 58-32 win. (1000 lbs.) J'Quan Fisher of Toledo Central Catholic pinned Devon Jones of Wauseon High School in 3 minutes and 43 seconds. Coach Mike Ritter said, Going in, I felt we had a chance to win the match. We didn't match up well with them in the middle weights, but I felt good about our light and upper weight match ups. Our lightweights did their part. They kept the match close going in to what I felt was the better part of Central's line-up. After getting through that middle part of the lineup, we were within striking distance coming in to what I felt was our advantage To be honest, he added, ...our upper weights let us down. We lost 3 of those matches in overtime. All of which were winnable. We really missed an opportunity tonight, because I felt the winner of our match with Central Catholic was in great position to advance to the team State Tournament.
