This book has been designed to help you understand the new IMPERIAL brand. You, our brand custodians, will be responsible for our continued growth and success by ensuring that all aspects of the brand are consistent. The book covers many aspects of our brand starting with the essence of who we are, and what we stand for, followed by important rules and guidelines to ensure that our new brand remains consistent at all times. To encourage this, all artwork, logos, templates, etc., are available to download from the IMPERIAL brand centre. The IMPERIAL brand centre has been especially created as a repository, for le and information sharing and to nd the latest and the most up to date information available on the IMPERIAL brand and its entire family of brands. This book is about the IMPERIAL brand. Our brand is the face, personality and promise of our company.
It denes what our brand is about, what it can accomplish for us, and how we express brand IMPERIAL to the world.
Think about the audiences with whom we need to communicate: our clients, our shareholders and the nancial community, the media and opinion leaders, our partners and suppliers, fellow employees, and our communities. They want to know what we stand for as a company and vwho is behind the products and services we offer. They look to our corporate brand for assurance, for stability and for afrmation of where the company is going. Its important that we communicate to these audiences effectively and consistently. This book was prepared to assist you in doing that. It describes our corporate brand and its critical role in moving people, moving business and moving industry. It explains what we want to convey about the IMPERIAL brand and the tools available to help you do it. It symbolises our culture, values and goals. It is derived from elements such as our name, identity and from experiences with our people, products and services. Our challenge is to tell the IMPERIAL brand story effectively. We need to manage the corporate brand and express its unequalled strength and heritage. We cannot leave it to be dened by others such as the media, our customers or even our competitors. The way we write.


How we speak, write and communicate about IMPERIAL is an important aspect of the brand. The word IMPERIAL must always appear in upper case in all materials, even electronic communication. It shows our commitment to the strength of the brand and our dedication to one brand standard. Never split the word IMPERIAL over line breaks and always use the word IMPERIAL at least a few times during communication. The more often we use this phrase, the more we build our brand, the more people know about us and the more we spread our brand values.

This is the master group logo.

The visual foundation of our corporate brand is the IMPERIAL brand mark - the innite I, based on the Mobius loop, it is represented with IMPERIAL air, as a bridge linking IMPERIALs past with its future. The Mobius loop illustrates the front and the back of the letter I at the same time, illustrating IMPERIALs transparency and integrity. The curved air of the innite I is directional, alluding to our focus of sustained future prots. The colours signify strength, energy and dynamism, and are based on our original business colours - vibrant red and dynamic blue.

Presenting the brand mark with high quality and consistency establishes a positive impression of our identity. But the brand mark by itself cannot fully dene the personality and characteristics of our brand. To do this, a brand identication and design system made up of a set of standardised graphic elements helps bring the IMPERIAL brand to life by creating a unique look and feel.

Typography
The IMPERIAL type family has been specially chosen for our use. It consists of Dax regular and Dax light. An italic version of each of these is also available. The Dax type is simple, modern and easy to read. It is the only typeface that should be used on all communications. The exception to the rule is for electronic material where the font Arial will be used as a standard system font. The IMPERIAL air and arrow


The IMPERIAL air forms the basis of our graphic language. It links the whole brand together. The IMPERIAL air is a unique shape that can be used in a variety of different ways. Figures 3 and 4 illustrate how the IMPERIAL air can be used as a graphic device to create visual interest and reinforce the IMPERIAL brand. The IMPERIAL air should be used as transparent layers as illustrated.

Constructing the master group logo with its divisions


The master group logo is the most important logo in the IMPERIAL brand. It forms the basis around which all other IMPERIAL logos have been constructed. Sub-brands and divisions can be differentiated with the use of division descriptors. Figures 5 and 6 show different examples of how descriptors should be applied. The master group logo has been constructed with great care to create a visually harmonious whole. Please refrain from reconstructing it; rather use the templates and logo artwork that have been made available to you. The pay-off line is aligned with the top of the IMPERIAL air and ts under the pinnacle of the negative shape of an A. See gures 1, 2 and 3 for visual reference. Division descriptors are positioned below the IMPERIAL text by tting it under the pinnacle of the negative shape of an A. Subsequent division descriptors can then be stacked underneath following the same method. Figures 2 and 3 show the correct positioning of the A and division descriptors. A clear space area which again corresponds to the height of an A has been introduced around all logos. This area of clear space serves to protect the logo from any graphic elements that might encroach and compete for attention with the brand. Minimum size of the IMPERIAL logo

The size of the logo is important to ensure the integrity of our brand. When placing the logo onto a page always make sure that the logo has enough space and legibility to be clearly seen. In instances where the logo will appear smaller than 40mm it is preferred that the tag line Fast Moving. Forward Thinking be removed, as the size will limit the font legibility. In all other instances the tag line must appear for consistency.

The We are IMPERIAL brand mark was especially created to unite all IMPERIAL brands and businesses under the group company name. It shows clearly that your business is endorsed by a strong brand name and that you have the backing and support of an international business. The We are IMPERIAL brand mark MUST be used in all instances with all IMPERIAL brands and businesses, including all marketing materials - printed and electronic. The brand mark must be at least 20% of the size of the brand being proled AND not smaller than 40mm in width measured on the IMPERIAL logotype only. Constructing the We are IMPERIAL brand mark


The We are IMPERIAL brand mark was constructed from the IMPERIAL logo. The payoff line is replaced with We are which are is set in the Dax font with a height that will t under the pinnacle of the negative space of the A. The bases of the letters are positioned to align with that of the IMPERIAL air. We dont use point sizes to dene the scale of the letters because type size should remain relative to the scale of the IMPERIAL logo. By doing this we ensure that all elements of the brand mark remain in a dened size relationship with one another. It becomes possible to scale the resulting brand mark in proportion without having to worry about legibility or consistency in reproduction. In the case of the linear We are IMPERIAL brand mark the We are is positioned before the IMPERIAL logo at a distance of half an A. When the We are IMPERIAL brand mark is correctly positioned it becomes possible to dene a clear space area around the logo to protect it from encroachment from surrounding graphic elements that may compete for attention; clear communication is crucial for optimum brand recognition. The We are IMPERIAL brand mark must be at least 20% of the size of the brand being proled AND not smaller than 40mm in width measured on the IMPERIAL logotype only.

The illustration details the correct logotype to use within a series of possible background colours. Use this as a guide for making the correct decision about which brand mark should go on what background. When applying the logotype to a photograph, choose one that allows the logotype to be clearly visible. Size relationships with other brands


To determine the 20% size relationship between the We are IMPERIAL brand mark and that of other brands, a simple graph as illustrated below will help. If the main logo is allowed to ll the square completely then the IMPERIAL logo should be allowed to occupy a space that is dened in increments of tenths of the square. The number of tenth sections have already been determined; please make sure that the correct number of tenths are allocated to the IMPERIAL logo. NB: the We are IMPERIAL brand mark MUST NOT be scaled smaller than 40mm in width, measured on the word IMPERIAL. Whilst it is impossible to specify every possible size for the We are IMPERIAL brand mark applications, it is recommended that in all printed and electronic stationery elements that the logo is a minimum of 20% of the size of the main brand AND not smaller than 40mm in width measured on the IMPERIAL logotype only.
