CEMASs Commitment to the Welsh Language The Welsh Government has presented its Welsh Language Strategy 2012

2017. Entitled A living language : a language for living the document sets out how the Welsh Government aims to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language in everyday life. The policy document can be downloaded here: http://wales.gov.uk/docs/dcells/publications/122902wls201217en.pdf CEMAS strives to follow the aims of the strategy, through the production of mobile applications with Welsh SMEs, events and marketing. This page outlines a number of areas where CEMAS have actively tried to integrate the use of Welsh with its operations. Objectives The main objectives of A Living Language : a language for living are as follows:

to encourage and support the use of the Welsh language within families to increase the provision of Welsh-medium activities for children and young people and to increase their awareness of the value of the language to strengthen the position of the Welsh language in the community to increase opportunities for people to use Welsh in the workplace to improve Welsh language services to citizens to strengthen the infrastructure for the language, including digital technology.

CEMAS are working with internal and external stakeholders to meet these objectives in the following ways:

To Encourage and support the use of the Welsh Language within families CEMAS, where possible, make their apps bi lingual, but CEMAS have also created a number of apps specifically in the Welsh language with an aim at promoting Welsh within the family unit. CEMAS worked with Golwg to create the Welsh language iPad app App Wcw - Rwdlan. Golwg is a Welsh language magazine established in 1988. It covers current events and features and claims a circulation of 12,000 a month, the largest circulation of any magazine in Wales. The app has a number of educational features boosting numeracy, literacy and colour recognition. Although this is a Welsh language app, non Welsh speaking parents can use it by switching on the English translation

for the stories. This promotes the use of Welsh within the family, and where there is a mix within the family of Welsh learners, speakers and non-Welsh speakers. More information on the app can be found here: http://www.cemas.mobi/projects/app-wcw-rwdlan/ CEMAS have worked on a number of mobile apps with SMEs, where the app can be interacted with through the medium of Welsh and English.

To increase the provision of Welsh-medium activities for children and young people and to increase their awareness of the value of the language As well as their App Wcw Rwdlan app, CEMAS have provided a number of applications in Welsh aimed at children and young people. For example, Archwilio is an app the allows users to view the history of their area and find out interesting information based on historical sites. The app itself can be presented in Welsh, and it means that Welsh speakers can propose new information on site that potentially does not have a Welsh translation. The app, therefore, actively crowd-sources to increase the knowledge held in the Archwilio central database and Welsh speakers can help by adding more information on sites in Welsh. To strengthen the position of the Welsh language in the Community CEMAS employ a number of Welsh speakers, and these can be available to work with SMEs during the planning process if requested by the SME. Where possible, we advertise CEMAS events in both Welsh and English, for our Welsh Apps Showcase in 2011 (the first major event held by CEMAS) we took out a number of Welsh language only adverts actively looking to encourage participation in the event with Welsh language speakers: http://www.cemas.mobi/about/downloads-all/cemas-print-and-stand-material/golwg-welsh-appsshowcase-2011-advert/ We also have taken part in Welsh language events (such as Gwyl Golwg) to promote more app proposal and participation from Welsh speaking SMEs and to create more digital content through the medium of Welsh. To increase Opportunities to use Welsh in the workplace CEMAS employs a number of Welsh speakers and SMEs are able to communicate with CEMAS through the medium of Welsh at their request. CEMAS collaborated with Safle Swyddfi to create a mobile app that lists specific job vacancies in Welsh where speaking Welsh is an essential part of the job. The app aims to encourage the advertisement and use of Welsh within the workplace by hiring more Welsh speakers. To Improve Welsh language Services to Citizens Where possible, advertising for the Business Support Programme and events is undertaken in both English and Welsh. To strengthen the infrastructure for the language, including digital technology CEMAS provides mobile applications with Welsh SMEs and high quality events on the digital sector across Wales. Our aim is to increase awareness of the opportunities within mobile for Welsh SMEs and also to deliver high quality collaborations with Welsh SMEs. CEMAS is passionate about increasing the number of mobile applications that use the Welsh language in innovative, fun and interesting ways. Some of our most successful apps have been delivered bilingually allowing a wider audience to view the Welsh language, but also to allow Welsh speakers to be able to use new technology in their own choice of language. CEMAS will continue to provide a service to Welsh SMEs and the ability to create high quality digital and mobile content in the medium of Welsh is a high priority for the Centre.
