Too Tired To Ride?
I recently went to a Blues Music Festival in Saint Louis,
MO, which started at 1:00 pm, and ended at 11:00 pm that
particular day. Needless to say, it was a long day for me.
Even though I do stay somewhat in shape and make a
conscious effort to diet properly, I notice that as I get older, I
must supplement my energy level to stay the course of such
happenings. I normally do this with a good ole cup of java
or two; however, I will partake in one of the many energy
drinks that are available on the market today. It goes with-
out saying, that the more you are awake and aware of your
surroundings, the safer you are operating a motorcycle. You
are taking a huge risk while driving a car or a truck while
fatigued, mentally or physically. Multiply this risk by five
if you are operating a vehicle with only two wheels under
these conditions. Under extreme fatigued situations, you
can suffer from poor judgment, optical illusions, and even
mental hallucinations. Under moderate fatigued situations,
you can suffer from poor judgment, poor decision making,
and altered reaction times. Even being slightly fatigued, you
can suffer the same symptoms as being moderate fatigued.
Obviously, if you operate a motorcycle under these condi-
tions, you are creating a recipe for disaster. So, besides
the obvious of getting plenty of rest, (At least eight hours of
sleep at bedtime), what else can we do to be an alert and
a fully aware rider? When you are riding and stop for that
all important biker breakfast, lunch, or dinner, avoid stuffing
yourself, or eat smaller portions more often during the day.
Know your body limits, at the first sign of feeling fatigue, pull
over and take a break, or make sure you are fully rested be-
fore getting on to ride. Believe it or not, a short little fifteen
or twenty minute, “Cat Nap” can do wonders. If you are on
prescription medications that make you drowsy or fatigued
and you plan to ride, then DON’T. Then, there is alcohol, a
double dose of danger, and a double dose of fatigue, need
I say anymore about that? Like I mentioned earlier, a cup
or two of coffee, or an energy drink, makes me feel young
again for an hour or two. However, I realize not everyone
likes coffee, and some energy drinks make some people
jittery, you just have to find what works for you. My young-
est son has found that some of the carbonated beverages
on the market and sweet tea help his cause. What ever you
find that helps your cause; just remember what your mother
told you, “Too Much Of Anything Is Not Good For You”.
Ride free, ride safe, and please, protect the children.

TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOU SAFE ON YOUR ROADS
KNOW AND BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE INVISIBLE TO ALL OTHER DRIVERS.

When approaching any intersection, assume cars traveling in the opposite direction are going to turn left and
run over you. Be prepared to take evasive action.

ALWAYS-ALWAYS have an escape route out of a situation to avoid the consequences of other peoples’ mis-
takes. Keep looking for the gap that you can use when someone else screws up.

Adjust your speed to your reaction time. At the end of a tiring day it will be much longer than it was on the way
to work at 8:00AM, so ride with bigger safety margins.

Check BOTH directions when the light turns green. Sooner or later someone will run that red light and run into
you.

Drivers who are using their cellular phones are not using their brains. Watch out for them.

Mirrors are important. If they don’t show anything but your elbows, buy some that do. Always use your mirrors.

Use other people’s mirrors, too. Look into the mirror of the car in front of you. That way you can see where they
are looking, and how attentive they are. If you can see them, chances are better that they can see you.

Trucks and vans often have a hard time checking their right side blind spot, and if you can’t see the truck mir-
rors, the driver can’t see you in the mirror.

Slippery oil, antifreeze, and ATF look like water, particularly in low light. Try to avoid all wet spots, but if you
can’t, ride over
them smoothly.

Check under (behind) parked cars. Those legs you see belong to a child who may run out in front of you.

Anticipate the moves of other vehicles. Drivers don’t always use their turn signals in traffic, but you MAY be
able to tell where they are going by watching their heads turn just before they change lanes.

Treat all metal surfaces - train rails, bridge gratings, manhole covers - with the utmost respect. They offer very
little traction when dry, and almost none when wet. Ride over them as smoothly as possible.

Ride in a gear that will allow you to accelerate quickly if you need to get out of a tight spot.

Never lose your temper when riding....If you do, STOP, take a breather, then resume your ride.

Always be on the lookout for, and expect, the unexpected.

Avoid racing with other motorists.

IF YOU’RE NOT SURE, DON’T!

9th Annual Outer Banks Bike Show
September 4th – 6th, 2009 Grandy, NC

Labor Day weekend on the Currituck Sound, once again, was filled with the constant rumble
of motorcycles down at Barry’s Walnut Island Restaurant/Lodge/Sports Center in Grandy, NC.
Owner, Barry Nelms, hosted his annual Outer Banks Bike Show event to raise money to ben-
efit the Victory Junction Gang for critically ill children and the Naval Special Warfare Founda-
tion – Navy Seals. The weather for his event was the best he’d seen in 9 years. The turnout
was incredible with thousands of bikes rolling through during the 3 day event. The crowds
enjoyed the 20 vendors that were on site, live music by Triple Shot, great food, fun and plenty
of activities. The U.S. Coast Guard honored our military with 3 “Fly Overs” on Saturday and
Sunday. The highlight of the event was the famous $5000 Poker Run – Kathy “Full House”
Kenny of Virginia Beach took 1st place with her Full House, winning $2000; 2nd place winner
Scott Sutherland of Norfolk won $1250; 3rd place was Wes Ellington of Winterville, NC with
$750; Kimberly Philpot of Newport News, VA won $500; Pamela Martin of Yorktown, VA with $350; Betty Sheppard of Hamp-
ton, VA won the final $150. The lady riders surely had the luck of the day since four out of the six winners were girls. All of
the bikes that were entered in the Bike Show were fantastic but Jackie Calp, winner of the 1st Place trophy in the Antique
Class with her ’72 Harley, swept up the honor of Best in Show. Everyone had such a great time. Barry is definitely looking
forward to seeing everyone back again for #10 in 2010. You won’t want to miss it….be sure to bring your friends!

Dave Barr Raises the Bar
By Lisa Price Waltman

83,000 miles ridden encircl-

ing the world on a Harley
Davidson is probably impres-
sive enough. 13,000 miles
across Europe, Russia, and
Siberia (in the dead of win-
ter) and traversing the four
extreme geographical points
of the Australian mainland is
nothing to scoff at and cer-
tainly warrants the two Guin-
ness World record titles he holds. But watching Dave Barr in action,
on or off of his Harley, is nothing short of amazing. A former Marine,
a member of three additional global military forces and a double leg
amputee, Barr walks the walk of his motto: “There is no great accom-
plishment without great risk.” Leading a nationwide group of riders
recently in the first annual Honor Run, sponsored by the 1st Marine
Division Association, Barr took time to speak to a group in Golden,
Colorado, and others across the country about courage, integrity, and
false heroes. “A professional athlete who knowingly breaks the law
is “punished” with a small monetary fine, a two game suspension and
we reward him by buying more of his jerseys.” Barr said. “A recording
artist brags in his lyrics about hurting others, especially women, and
what do we do? …we buy more of their CD’s. These are NOT our
heroes and shame on us for treating them as such!” Barr said. In front
of a packed auditorium in Beaver, Utah, Barr spoke to high school
students and staff about personal choices, actions and consequences.
Never boasting on himself as if to say: “Look what I’ve done and I’m
supposedly ‘disabled’.” Barr carried his message of courage and
leadership to hundreds of captivated listeners who just minutes before
believed that forty-five minutes of time out of class and extra text mes-
saging opportunities were to be the highlight of their day. Their facial
expressions, the closed books and deactivated phones illustrated their
immediate attitude adjustment. “If you get up in the morning and you
look in the mirror and see your best friend, you will be able to say to
yourself: “I CAN!” to anything that challenges you.” Barr said. “But
if in that mirror you see an enemy, your thoughts and actions will be
“I can’t.” he said. “But YOU can change that…you can be that differ-
ence in your own life…don’t make it someone else’s responsibility…
it is entirely yours!” Barr said with exuding passion and determination.
Barr, an advocate for the true heroes; the military and disabled, led
The Honor Run, an 8,000 mile motorcycle ride from Washington, D.C.,
to Foothill Ranch, CA, during August and September of 2009, raising
awareness and funds to help build a Fisher House, a “home-away-
from-home” for injured and recovering military and veterans. With
nearly 2,000 total riders registered, Barr was unshakable in leading
the way and keeping the purpose of the ride on the hearts and minds
of everyone encountered. “Our military deserve so much more than For more information on Dave Barr visit: www.davebarr.

The Lord said “ ask George.” George happens to be George Wills, the www.pointman.homestead.com

thought George said “ ok.” I am very thankful to have a boss that gives
me so much latitude in my job. George also allows me to use SRHD
as my headquarters for Wreaths Across America. I give my heart felt
thanks to George Wills for his support of WAA and Haven Mission.
You may ask, What is the big deal, isn’t this another church service?
Yes, in a way it is. However, how many times have you been to
“church” in a motorcycle shop? I know a number of people who will not
go into a formal church. They feel out of place. Their perception is “ I
won’t be accepted.” They see the nice buildings, the beautiful grounds,
people in their “ Sunday best “ and are put off by it. I personally feel
that they have the wrong perception. Most churches would gladly
welcome them but they don’t know that. Haven Mission is for that
person. What you ride and how you dress is not important, finding
Christ is.
Jesus spent most of His earthly ministry with ordinary people, even
sinners and tax collectors. He did not have a beautiful building with a
manicured lawn. Although He preached in the temple occasionally, His
ministry was in the open fields and in the streets and people flocked
to Him to hear the truth. This is what He is telling me to do. Preach the
truth of His Word. This will be my banner for the rest of my life. Rev R.J.(Rocky)Angone,Jr
