5 HOURS DEPARTMENT: Electrical and Computer Engineering COURSE: ECE 4260 Communication Systems EXAMINER: P. Yahampath PAGE NO: 1 OF 4

Closed-book exam: No printed or hand-written material allowed. A calculator may be used. Answer all 3 questions. All questions carry equal marks. 1. A communication system uses double sideband suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) modulation at the transmitter and a synchronous demodulator at the receiver. Suppose that this system is used to transmit a sinusoidal message signal of average power 0.1 W. The average power output of the DSB-SC transmitter is 10 W. Due to some problem, the DSB-SC transmitter is replaced by a new broadcast AM transmitter, while keeping the same receiver (the message input to the transmitter remains the same). Furthermore, adjustments are made to the new transmitter so that the demodulated output at the receiver also remains same as before (assume that the demodulator at the receiver lters-out any dc at its output). With this adjustment, the average power output of the new transmitter is found to be 400 W. Find the value of modulation index used by the new transmitter. 2. Let x(t) = sinc2 (1000t) and y (t) = sin(2 104 )t. Plot the magnitude and phase spectra of z (t) = x(t) y (t) + x (t)y (t) where x (t) and y (t) are the Hilbert transforms of x(t) and y (t) respectively. 3. A message signal m(t) is frequency modulated. It is known that max |m(t)| = 1/3 volt. The phase deviation of the frequency modulated carrier as a function of time is shown below.

Now suppose that the same message signal is phase modulated using a modulator with a sensitivity of /10 radians per volt. Plot the phase deviation of the phase modulated carrier as a function of time. You must indicate the value of you plot at various points.
