Unit/Lesson Title/Number: Genetics Genes Lesson #4-Gene Review/Prep for Quiz Context and Class Profile 1st Period- 5 IEPs, 16 students 2nd Period- 1 IEP, 15 students

Common Core Standards

Assessed: 2.1a Heredity information is contained in genes. Genes are composed of DNA that makes up the chromosomes of cells 2.1b Each gene carries a single unit of information. A single inherited trait of an individual can be determined by one pair or by many pairs of genes. A human cell contains thousands of different genes. 2.1c Each human cell contains a copy of all the genes needed to produce a human being. 2.2a In all organisms, genetic traits are passed on from generation to generation 2.3.3 Explain the impact of the use and abuse of electronically generated information on individuals and families

Interdisciplinary Connections

Strongly connected to biology.

Lesson Objectives
Label : (Blooms Taxonomy)

1. Students will be able to recall the definition of DNA and what its role in the human body is. 2. Students will be able to differentiate between traits that are controlled by one gene and traits that are controlled by many genes. 3. Students will be able to explain that each organism has a different number of chromosomes and that these chromosomes come in pairs. 4. Students will be able to differentiate between the genotype and phenotype of an organism. 5. Students will be able to relate (synthesis) the vocabulary from this lesson to their lives. 6. Students will be able to illustrate (analyze) the vocabulary.

1-6. All of these objectives should be met through the review game.

and/or auditing purposes.

Procedure Teacher input, development, instructional method(s), modeling, guided practice, independent practice, and/or activities

Today will be a review day for the students. The teacher will start off class by asking those who havent shown their homework yet to show it. The class will then be divided into teams and a review game will be played. Each student will participate in this game. The game will take the entire period and will cover each of the objectives laid out so far during this unit. The teacher will use the review game as a formative assessment to determine if the students are prepared. If there are questions that seem to be minimally understood, the teacher will pause to explain and strengthen the students understanding.

Assessment/ Evaluation
Label formative or summative, describe purpose, and provide grading/feedback method.

1. Review Game (summative)-the teacher will use the review game to determine if the students are prepared for the quiz. Any questions that cause problems will be discussed in class.

Technology
Describe type and purpose. Include a back-up plan.

SMART Board, PowerPoint

Academic Language required for the lesson

Students will need to know what DNA is and that on chromosomes there are genes and alleles. They will also learn the difference between genotype and phenotype.
