belie*e that we re called to demonstrate the life of :esus as resurrected .ord and 6aster;

I belie*e that the .ord called us to heal the sic5, cleanse the lepers, and raise the dead; I belie*e that the resurrection of the dead belon0s to the 1hurch; 4nd I belie*e that this stud& will help us 0et closer to attainin0 that realit&. <e will see more results in spiritual thin0s once we understand that we are spiritual bein0s and that we ha*e power o*er the forces of e*il. Bhis means there was a battle in*ol*ed in e*er& miracle :esus did. 7*er& miracle 3e had was preceded b& a battle of unbelief, doubt, impossibilit&, public opinion, and so forth= which is 0ood, because if 3e had these battles, we will ha*e them, too. 8n the wa& to Bethan&, the de*il, of course, was tal5in0. Aou can>t ha*e twel*e people with &ou that don>t a0ree with &ou and not ha*e them 0ripe, complain, and murmur. 6a&be the& didn>t e*en say an&thin0, but their attitude was showin0. I was once ministerin0 in a church where there was a woman confined to a wheelchair with emph&sema and brain dama0e. 6& wife had Hust finished preachin0, and I was pacin0 bac5 and forth on the platform, as5in0 the .ord, ?<hat better time for her to be healed than nowD@ 3e replied, ?I don>t 5now=what is a better timeD@ In other words, 3e was sa&in0, ?I>m waitin0 on &ou.@ I as5ed the pastor, )Come an# hel! me heal this woman*' 3e loo5ed at me li5e I was craC&, because ministers don>t %0

Bhat was m& cue. I could ha*e quit ri0ht there, and no one would ha*e blamed me, because she didn>t ha*e enou0h faith for her healin0. 4fter all, she didn>t e*en answer me. But I 0rabbed her and pulled her out of the wheelchair. 3ow did I 0et enou0h faith to do thatD I had been meditatin0 as I paced on the platform. I saw the seemin0 impossibilit& of the womanKs condition, but m& heart was primed and belie*in0 for a miracle. +ou can get to a !lace in ,o# where you can receive a miracle. :esus promised this to us in 6ar5 %%'/#, when 3e said' *hat things soever $e desire, when $e pra$, believe that $e receive them, and $e shall have them!+ I had reached that place in faith. I wal5ed o*er to the woman, pulled her out of her wheelchair, wal5ed her around= and she was instantl& healed; She wheeled her wheelchair out of the church. She returned two da&s later, still without her wheelchair. 7*en thou0h m& wal5 from the platform to the sic5 woman seemed li5e a lon0 wal5 to me, :esus had to wal5 a lot lon0er to 0et to Bethan&, and 3e had a lot more time to thin5 about what 3e was intendin0 to do.

<hen :esus arri*ed at Bethan&, .aCarus sister 6artha hurried to 3im and blurted out, Lord, if thou hadst been here, m$ brother had not died+ F:ohn %%'/%G. Bhis was the first ?0uilt trip@ that was laid on 3im. Bhe whole town had been discussin0 :esus before 3e e*er arri*ed. ?<hat does that ha*e to do with an&thin0D@ &ou ma& wonder. It>s hard to do a miracle when e*er&one has been tal5in0 about &ou before &ou e*en 0et there. 4nd the& weren>t sa&in0 how wonderful :esus was; 6artha continued in *erse //, )ut / now, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt as of God, God will give it thee!+ Bhat was a reli0ious cliche. She didn>t belie*e itI she Hust said it. 6artha was disappointed in :esus. She was disappointed that 3e didn>t 0et there when the& as5ed 3im for 3is personal attention. %/

/nvitation to a Resurrection
Notice this clash between doubt, unbelief, and the faith of :esus. :esus had a decision to ma5e at this point' <as 3e 0oin0 to let the de*il rob 3im of 3is faith throu0h 6artha>s unbeliefD Unless :esus 0ot 6artha>s and 6ar&>s cooperation, 3e wouldn>t ?intrude@ b& resurrectin0 .aCarus from the dead. <h& notD Because in this, as in e*er&thin0 else, 3e needs an in*itation into &our home and life. :esus is not 0oin0 to come to &our home and heal &our children a0ainst &our will. +id &ou 5now thatD 3e needs an in*itation to wor5 in &our life. 4nd at this point, 3e didn>t ha*e an in*itation from 6artha to resurrect her brother. 3er unbelief, doubt, and resentment toward 3is decisions and 3is not bein0 there were clashin0 a0ainst 3is spiritual 0ift; <hen 3e as5ed 6artha, )elievest thou this0+ what was %"

But that>s not what 3e as5ed. 3e was not tal5in0 about deit&I 3e was tal5in0 about resurrection. Bhis is a t&pical response. People come out of left field to a*oid a direct answer when &ou challen0e their faith and the& don>t ha*e an&. 6artha was ?beatin0 around the bush@ and a*oidin0 the question. Bhe Bible sa&s we ou0ht to be full of the 3ol& Spirit, spea5in0 to oursel*es with son0s, and h&mns, and spiritual son0s. <e ou0ht to pra& in the spirit, pra& with our understandin0, and sin0 in the spirit, the Bible tells us. <h&D Because there is a pra&er lan0ua0e a*ailable to us=an abilit& to communicate with the spirit realm of (od, with (od 3imself=an abilit& to build oursel*es up in our faith that b&passes our intellect. <hen our ton0ue becomes acquainted with pra&in0, &ieldin0 to a pra&er lan0ua0e that has not been thou0ht up, sifted, or wor5ed out, our ton0ue will start &ieldin0 to a word of 5nowled0e, a (od-0i*en command, or a confession of the <ord, before our mind has time to thin5 about it and tal5 us out of it; Bhus, we need to pra& in our ton0ue to cooperate with faith. If we donKt, we ma& ha*e to retrie*e words of doubt and unbelief that will slip out of our mouth. No record in the Bible sa&s that :esus pra&ed in ton0ues. 8f course, the 3ol& Spirit was poured out later on the +a& of Pentecost. Bhe Spirit of (od was 0i*en to us so we could learn how to flow with the 3ol& Spirit.

Jesus, Reaction to 5nbelief


4t .aCarus> tomb, :esus 0roaned in the spirit. 3e was not onl& acquainted with the letter of the <ordI 3e was also acquainted with the 3ol& Spirit that was in 3im.

Aou can see that the whole town had been tal5in0 about :esus. <hen 3e wept, the& thou0ht, ?3e>s weepin0 because, e*en thou0h 3e opened the e&es of the blind, 3e couldn>t 5eep his friend .aCarus from d&in0.@ Bhe& 0ot the wron0 messa0e. People who are in the natural can>t percei*e the thin0s of (od. /f you0re not careful1 you0ll have enough religiosity to be nice1 but you0ll have enough unbelief to be #efeate#.

6artha and 6ar& said the ri0ht ?reli0ious@ thin0s, but were the& in a place spirituall& to recei*e resurrection for their brotherD Bhe& weren>t e*en thinking about resurrection. Neither were the townspeople. :esus was anointed b& the 3ol& Spirit to do the wor5 of (od, but 3e was supposed to li*e off the stren0th of the <ord and 3is inner man. 3e had to 0uard 3is heart, Hust as we do, from the infiltration of doubt and unbelief. 3e had Hust encountered .aCarus> lo*ed ones, and both sisters told 3im, ?It>s o*er; Aou>re late; If Aou had been here, %!

But there is a wa& to 0uard &our heart and wor5 with doubtin0 people, shiftin0 them into an arena of faith. :esus was a master of this technique, and we>re supposed to learn how to do it, because the world is not 0oin0 to readil& recei*e what we ha*e to sa&. <e>*e 0ot to be able to successfull& turn situations around so people can come to the place where the& can recei*e the (ospel. :esus 0roaned in 3is spirit, or inner man, when 6ar& said that 3e could ha*e pre*ented .aCarus from d&in0. It ir5ed 3im. It rubbed 3im the wron0 wa&. 3is spirit man rebelled a0ainst it. 3e 0roaned, ?8hhhh.@

.et>s consider this question' If :esus was 0oin0 to raise .aCarus from the dead an&wa&, and if it had nothin0 to do with an in*itation from his famil&, wh& did 3e sa& to 6artha, If $ou would believe, $ou would see0+ If 3e was 0oin0 to raise .aCarus from the dead in spite of 6artha, 3e would ha*e said, ?<atch and see.@ But 3e didn>t sa& that, because up until that time, the disciples, the sisters, and the townspeople had not pro*ided the right atmos!here for a miracle. :esus stands at the door to our life and 5noc5s. 3e>s not 0oin0 to brea5 that door down. Not onl& that, but they were being use# of the enemy to try to talk Jesus out of a miracle He ha# set in motion a few #ays before1 when 3e said, #he sic ness is not unto death!+ Bhe de*il was usin0 e*er&one he could to tr& to rob :esus of this miracle; 3e started with the disciples, includin0 Bhomas, 0ot to 6artha and 6ar&, and then used the townspeople. Bhe .ord had to prepare the hearts of the people so 3e could ha*e some in a0reement with 3im re0ardin0 the resurrection of .aCarus. If 3e was 0oin0 to brin0 him bac5 to life b& the power of (od, some lo*ed ones had to be in*itin0, pullin0, belie*in0, trustin0, and e-pectin0 that .aCarus would be resurrected.
