The Short-Term Effects of Bullying What Are the Immediate Effects of Bullying? By Rebecca Fraser-Thill The effects of bullying can be immediate and long-term. Victims often experience the following short-term effects of bullying. Psychological Issues Are Common Effects of Bullying Victims of bullying commonly demonstrate a number of psychological problems, particularlydepression and anxiety. Girls may also develop eating disorders after or while being bullied. In addition, victimized children of both sexes may develop psychosomatic issues, which are bodily complaints that have no physical cause. For instance, victims often suffer from headaches or stomachaches, particularly before the school day begins. Effects of Bullying Include Problems With Sleep Bully victims often have a range of sleep issues. They may have difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep and/or getting their needed rest in any given night. When victims are able to sleep, they are more likely to experience nightmares than their nonvictimized peers. These nightmares tend to be vivid and menacing and may or may not involve the bully.

Victims of Bullying May Become Suicidal Unfortunately, victims of bullying have higher rates of suicidality than their peers. This means that they think about committing suicide much more often than others their age. As many high-profile cases make clear, a number of victims follow through on these suicidal thoughts. Effects of Bullying Include Problems With Peers Victimized children also suffer from lower social status than non-victimized children. Social exclusion may have lead to a child being victimized in the first place, but it seems that peer rejection gets even worse after a person is bullied. As a result, victims often feel lonely and abandoned and suffer from low self-esteem. Issues At School Are Common Effects of Bullying Bully victims tend to have problems with academic achievement. This primarily occurs due to victims' frequent absenteeism. In fact, about 7% of American eighth-graders reporting staying home from school at least once a month to avoid being bullied. When victims do attend school, they tend to avoid certain parts of the school, such as the restrooms. About 20% of middle schoolers also report feeling scared all day at school, making learning difficult if not impossible.

Raymond is seven years old. He looks short, thin, have curly hair and wears spectacles. He scores good marks and gets first place in exams in his pre-school. He is an intelligent boy too. First day, Raymond came to school with his parents for registration. His classmates and schoolmates look continuously towards him. Raymond was so scared because he was new at school. He didnt know any other children. His parents left him after finish all the procedures in the school. Raymond was confident that he could make friends with the children. The first day at school, Raymond and his classmates were playing in the school playground during recess time. He was playing see-saw. He saw one of his classmates Irene coming towards him. Raymond was so happy because he could make Irene as his friend. But, Irene kicked him. He fell down from the see-saw and his shirt got dirty. Get out of my way, she said. Raymond was so sad and he went to washroom to clean the dirt. Later, he went to canteen to eat. He bought food and looked for a friend. He looked for a friendly face. He sat beside David. David is a standard three student whom likes to play truant. David talked nicely to Raymond and he looked happy. Suddenly, looks like you have got more than I do said David while took the food from Raymond. Raymond held back his tears, but he didnt say anything to David. He went off silently from there. The school bell rang. Recess time was over. Raymond went to his classroom. It was arts subject on that time. All the students drew a picture and colour it as instructed by Puan.Linda. Puan.Linda left her class because she had some work to be done in school office. Students drew and coloured the picture but Mary and Bella was standing beside Raymond and talked something about him that was not so nice. Hey, look at him. He has funny hair Mary whispered to Bella. Raymond heard her but he didnt say anything. The school bell rang again which means the happiest moment for the schools students and also that the school was over and they could dismiss. Raymond packed his thing and get ready to go back home. He went home

alone without friends. After reach home, he closed his bedroom door and he cried without his parents knowing. He was cry until he releases his anger with towards his friends. He was so scared and he is not willing to tell it to his parents. Raymond wake up early morning and get ready to go to school but he feels scared just to think of what will happen in school. It was second day Raymond was in his school. His father sends him to school on that day. No one talked or played with Raymond. He was lonely and he feels abandoned. Raymond was sweeping his class because the class was dirty and filled with a lot of rubbish. Rebecca the class head enters the class furiously. She notices that Raymond was sweeping the floor and she purposely throw rubbish around the class. She throws papers, sweet papers and some stationary towards Raymond. Hey you.. Please take of the rubbish she instructed Raymond. Raymond didnt say anything and he went to sweep the floor. All the kids, not only in his class but every other kid started to bully him because of his soft and non-aggressive attitude. They started to take advantage of him like asking him to do their work for them. Even though Raymond did not care much of others using him, he did feel that he was being bullied and his self moral went down. There was no one that he could speak out to. All he could afford to do was to lock all the emotions within him and act as though nothing has happened. If he felt really sad, he would cry to release some of those feelings. Days past and the situation was getting ever so worst. It was a Monday morning. The bell rang for recess time after Madam Roses Mathematics and Madam Xins Moral class. Raymond went to the school playground. Mary, Bella, Rebecca and Stephen were playing there. Everyone was picked except for one student. It was none other than Raymond. None of the children picked Raymond to be on their team. Go away Raymond said Stephen. Dont you know wh en you are not wanted? We dont want to play with you. You would expect him to be patient in these kinds of situations. But this time Raymond lost his patients and he said something. STOP BEING MEAN TO ME he yelled. Its not nice. I may be the new kid for you but I am same as you. Raymond was so sad and he angry with his classmates but he dont show it to them.

The children felt bad about what they have done to Raymond. They knew that they wouldnt like it if someone acted towards them like the way th ey acted toward Raymond. Each of them apologizes to Raymond for what they have done. The recess time was over. School bell rang. Students rushes to their classes. Raymond went to his class with his classmates. They stopped being mean to Raymond. They got to know him and they liked him very much. The children include Raymond in their group. Thats when they understood that they were all different, but they could still be friends. They started to mingle with Raymond, and that is when they realise the true character of him. He is a really understanding and helping friend. Whenever a friend of his is in trouble, he will be the first person to give a helping hand. He is gem of a person whose character was badly misunderstood by them. One day, one of his friends forgot to bring his lunch money. Raymond did not think twice before he gave his own money to him so that he could eat. He did not care if he would become hungry and starve. He just cared for his friend. That is when his entire friend realised the mistakes they made towards him. They felt really bad about themselves for being really cruel to him. They said we are sorry; we were mean for you Raymond! Raymond forgot the past because he gets into Past is Past principle. He was so happy. From that day, Raymond make friends with others include David whom playing truant. He advised David to be a good student. David was feeling sorry for what he has done to the school. He apologizes to the headmaster and teachers and he comes to school every day. Raymond was happily gone home with his friends. It was the schools annual awards ceremony. Every kids dream on that day is to receive the award of best student. Parents of all the students attended the function. Raymonds parents were also present on that day. The moment that everyone was waiting for came which is the announcement of the receiver of the best student award. It was Raymond! It was not a surprise though as he was the deserved student. His parent felt so proud of him. It was the best day of his life and he would not forget that day for the rest of his life. (1230 words)

REFLECTION

When I receive this assignment I was really confused of the instruction and works given. After the explanation given by our lecturer, Madam Nurliza Othman, I had a clear view of the task. The first task given is individual task. The second task is pair work. It took two weeks for me and my classmates to finish this assignment task. I have gained a lot of experience throughout this assignment. I acquire knowledge from the articles that I have chosen. The first article is about effect of bullying. I have found the effect of bullying among school students and teenagers. It will help me handle bullying cases in school after I become a teacher. Otherwise, I learned about types of child abuse which is top rated news in our country. I could identify types of child abuse and the precautions steps should be taken to bend it. As a future teacher, I will take care of my students and teach them to protect themselves from abusing. I have learned to manage my time effectively when doing this assignment. Time is Gold. So, we should appreciate it. A better time management is important to finish a successful assignment. I have gained a lot of knowledge and new experience. I have learned how to be creative and innovative by doing the mind map. I have done the mind map creatively. I will apply it in school by teaching my students with the help of teaching aids which will attract students to learn English effectively. Other than that, I have learned to create mind map using computer. I had found that we could create a creative mind map using technology. Nevertheless, I had faced some problems in writing the story in my group. I did a lot of grammar mistakes. As a language learner, I should improve my grammar by reading newspaper, magazines and etc. On the other hand, I also have faced difficulties in writing the story based on social issue theme. It is because this is the first time I wrote a story in between 1200-1500 words with my group member. So, I refer to my article to write a story about bullying. As I wrote the story I found the problem faced by bully victims in school. After finish wrote the story, I ask my friend to check the grammar mistakes that my group mate and I did.

I was learnt how to narrate a story. Story telling is a good way to attract students to learn a subject. Students will not feel bored and they will show their interest to the subject. I learnt the process of narrating a story throughout this assignment. In future, I think that I could attract my students interest towards English subject by narrating story. Moreover, I have a strong self-confidence to narrate the story in front of my class. Last but not least. I thank to the God because I was able to finish this assignment without any hassle. Although coming across few problems, it doesnt dampen my spirit while it give me strength to complete the task. I would like to thank Madam.Nurliza Othman, my group mate, my fellow friends, family members and whoever gives me moral support.
