Course Description:
An intermediate level skills course in Microsoft Access. Topics include reports, forms,
OLE fields, sub forms, macros, VBA and the switchboard manager. An introduction to
relational database theory and database design is included.
In addition to class meetings, e-mail and the web will be primary modes of
communicating course materials, special notices and for distributing and collecting
assignments.

Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to give you an introduction to basic database design
concepts and to fully familiarize you with the Microsoft Access Database Management
System. At the end of the semester, you should be able to:
1. Understand what a database is and where they came from.
2. Understand different types of Databases and Database Management Systems.
3. Describe the major components of Databases and Database Management Systems.
4. Develop tables, queries, forms, and reports.
5. Describe the major components of a Relational Database and how they work
together.
6. Understand the purpose and benefits of the Relational Database Model.
7. Understand how to use and interpret Structured Query Language.
8. Understand the basics of macros and Switchboards.
9. Develop a fully functional Microsoft Access Database.

Class Expectations:
• Students who stop attending class without doing the necessary withdrawal
paperwork will receive an automatic grade of “F”.
• Attendance is mandatory. Quizzes will be unannounced. There will be no
make-ups given for missed quizzes. Students will be allowed to make up
exams at the instructor’s discretion and only if approved by the instructor
before the scheduled exam time.
• All students are required to have on-demand access to a laptop computer.
Students will be required to use their laptops during exams and are
strongly advised to bring their laptop to each class meeting so that they
can work through hands-on exercises in class.
• Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will receive
an automatic grade of “F”. Refer to the Student Handbook and University
Catalog for more information about the Academic Integrity Policy.
• Students are expected to complete all reading and assignments prior to the
beginning of class on the day the assignment is due. Late work will not be
accepted.
