Frequency adverbs

Gli avverbi di frequenza inglesi hanno, a differenza dell'italiano, una collocazione

diversa e meno flessibile nell'ambito della frase.
The position in the sentence of the English frequency adverbs is often
different from Italian and definitely less flexible.

I often go to the cinema

• Spesso vado al cinema
• Vado spesso al cinema
• Vado al cinema spesso

Use/Uso
Posizione:
• Si collocano immediatamente tra soggetto e verbo principale (quando il verbo è
solo). Between subject and main verb (when the verb is alone)
He always goes to bed early. Va sempre presto a letto.

• tra verbo e verbo (se è un tempo composto). Between the auxiliary and the
verb when we have more than one verbal form.
I have always done my homework. Ho fatto sempre i compiti.

• dopo il verbo essere. After the verb to be.

o He often comes home. Spesso viene a casa.
o Does he often come home? Viene spesso a casa ?
o He doesn't often come home. Non viene spesso a casa.
o He is not usually late. Solitamente non arriva in ritardo.
o He has often been late. Spesso è arrivato tardi.

• Precedono sempre l'ausiliare nelle risposte brevi. They always go before the
auxiliary in the short answers.

 o Do you often watch tv? No we rarely do. Guardate spesso tv? No
raramente.
o Is he always so boring? Yes he always is. E’ sempre così noioso? Sì,
sempre.

Sometimes, usually, occasionally, frequently

Questi avverbi possono anche occupare una posizione iniziale o finale nella frase.
These adverbs can also be placed either in an initial or in a final position.
Sometimes I visit my old uncle. I visit my old uncle sometimes. A volte faccio
visita al mio vecchio zio.

Non… mai
Never equivale all'italiano "non … mai": non richiede l'avverbio negativo not né
l'ausiliare (nel caso del presente semplice: don't - doesn't).
Never is equivalent to the Italian non… mai, therefore it doesn’t need any
other negative word.
He never watches tv after dinner. Non guarda mai la tv dopo cena.
She's never late for school. Non arriva mai in ritardo a scuola.

Ever
Equivale all'italiano "mai" inteso nel senso di "qualche volta".
Ever is equivalent to “mai” in the sense of “qualche volta”.
Do you ever go on holiday abroad? No, I never do.
Vai mai in vacanza all'estero? No mai
