1. Explain the causes for the failure of Rizals Borneo project.

One of the major causes for the failure of Rizals Borneo Colonization project was the refusal of the recent Spanish Consul Governor-General Eulogio Despujol during the Spanish Colonization. When General Despujol replaced General Wylers regime which was described as terroristic, Rizal already had a plan to move his family to Sabah (North Borneo) in order to establish a Filipino colony there. Due to the promises that General Despujol promised to the Filipino nation of a fine program of government for the reason that the Borneo colonization project for his perspective was an anti-patriotic act because that will mean there will be a shift of nationalities between the Indios and the people of North Borneo and that patriotism doesnt show when you cultivate foreign soil which will be there way of living in the land of Borneo; other than it would be an anti-patriotic act, it would also be an act that would lessen the laborers of the Filipino nation to cultivate the land that was colonized by Spain. Also, it was said that the governor-general Despujol did not favor of the establishment of the Filipino community in Sabah because it was owned by the British colony which has a different trading company from Spain which will result in the loss of Filipino people if they be influenced to leave Philippines and live in Borneo where they are promised a life if luxury which includes a 100,000 acres of land, a harbor and a good government for 999 years all for free. Rizal saw this when he was in Hong Kong that the Englishmen treated their colonized countries better than the Spanish government. Another factor of why Rizals colonization project was a failure is because of Manuel Hidalgo, the great Batanguenos objection. Most of his friends from Europe, particularly Lopez Jaena, Juan and Antonio Luna, Dr. Bautista Lin and his best friend Ferdinand Blumentritt was pleased of the idea of the colonization, imagining a brother in-law opposing to an idea like that had an impact also to Rizals self-esteem to not pursue anymore the settlement to be with Borneo because Hidalgo didnt like the idea of running away; he was in favor of the revolution and he wanted to save the Philippines from the Spanish government. 2. Why and how did Rizal plan for a college for Filipinos in Hong Kong?

When Rizal traveled to Hong Kong on February 1888, he was impressed with the methods of education in the British colony and their spirit of patriotism. After suffering the loss on the Kalamba Hacienda and looking at what the Spanish government did to his people made Rizal wanted to get a better life for his people, now this is in connection of the Borneo Colonization plan that Rizal had in mind. Seeing how the educational system in the Philippines was lacking to some students there who had the potential to do more in their lives he planned to establish a modern college in Hong Kong for the Filipino students which would focus on the arts, sciences and languages just like what the Jesuits did in the Philippines. This college aims Rizals main points on how to run a real college and which is in the contrary of the educational system the Spanish has uphold under the Philippines, its aim is to train and educate men of good family and financial means in accordance with the demands of modern times and circumstance. In the case of the Kalamba Hacienda, Rizal noticed that it was biased to let the Spanish government win and Rizal was against that so he conducted this plan to give a new perspective to Filipinos who wanted to be educated in good will. His ideas for the curriculum in the college that was supposed to be set-up in Hong Kong was very similar to the curriculum of todays typical public schools which only mean that this was Rizals thought on how a school is supposed to be, not like the ones that are being controlled by the friars during the reign of the Spanish Government. He told this to an acquaintance which he met in Hong Kong, Jose Ma. Basa whom he asked comments and suggestions about the idea of building the college there in Hong Kong in one of his letters.

Having practiced medicine here for a living in Hong Kong, Rizal thinks that putting a college for the fellow Filipino people will be much better for them to use their minds as a student because Rizal loved the educational and the political treatment here. He finished ophthalmology in Hong Kong which gives him the edge of thinking that if he could do it, so does the fellow Filipino would.
