General
The Driescher SF 6 switchgears are designed for all types of indoor applications in stations suitable for example as cellar-, garage-, polyester-, concrete-, tower-, compact-, steel-sheet and lattice tower stations. The switch-disconnectors in the switchgear operate with currents up to 63 0 A and voltages up to 3 8 kV, 5 0/60 Hz. All live parts inside the switchgear are insulated with the insulating gas named sulphur hexafluoride (SF 6). The quenching of the arc takes place in hermetically sealed arcing chambers that are not in connection with the insulating gas of the switchgear.
SF 6 is a synthetic gas. It is n o n flammable, untoxic, odorless, colourless and slow in its reactions. Its dielectric rigidity is about three times higher than the one of air and up to 5 00 C it does not show any signs of decomposition. O n behalf of the factory the insulating gas is filled into the switchgear before delivery. The rated value of the filling pressure is 1 1 8 kPa. O n the G.I.S.E.L.A switchgear the burst pressure of the gas tank is limited to 2 5 0kPa (over pressure) by means of defined bursting discs.
O bserve the conditions for installation into substations. In addition to cable- and transformer cubicles also circuit-breaker-, measuring- and coupling cubicles can be delivered. Properties of the switchgear F actory-assembled, type-tested and metalenclosed switchgear for indoor applications. insulation by sulphur hexafluoride. arc resistant. high safety for persons. high operational safety and availability. independent of atmospheric influences (humidity, temperature, dirt, etc.). maintenance-free. small dimensions.
An ti- Bu r s t- Sy s te m (ABS)
As a standard, the switchgears type MINEX are eq u ipped with an ABS . A pressu re sensor is integrated in the wall of the gas tank and detects a pressu re increase within the whole switchgear. In case of an arc fau lt the grounding switches of the incoming cu b icles are actu ated. The pre-tensioned drives of the grounding switches are interconnected. By activating the grounding switch the arc fau lt is transformed into a galvanical short circu it - the arc is q u enched. Thu s there are no pressu re effects on walls or floors in the su rrou nding of the switchgear. The manu al mak ing- and b reak ing operation can b e performed as u su al with a pre-tensioned mechanism. In the standard design, switchdisconnectors and grounding switches are mechanically interlock ed. The lock ing, however, permits the activation of the grounding switch for the arc fau lt limiting pu rpose independent of the switching state of the whole switchgear. The operating pressu re of the pressu re sensor is in a safe distance b elow the b u rst pressu re of the b u rsting disc. The activation of the ABS is indicated with a yellow high-voltage flash in the front cover of the switchgear.

Recommendations for the Installation Observe the environmental effects of SF6 switchgear that in case of internal arc faults open with a high energy potential via burst discs. Particularly observe the compression load of the surrounding building that depends on the operating pressure of the pressure release device. For the SF6 switchgear type G.I.S.E.L.A. the operating pressure of the burst disc is 250kPa (over pressure). Positioning examples: see Appendix A. Switchgears of type MINEX are equipped with an arc-fault limiting device that enables an installation in any possible building.

Emergency Unlocking In case of a fault or breakdown of the auxiliary supply of the motor mechanism, the switch can be manually operated with the crank. For this purpose the gear of the motor mechanism first has to be unlocked. You unlock the gear by extracting the unlocking bolt (1) and turning it until it clicks (by 90 ). The unlocking bolt is situated in the front cover of the switchgear on top of the motor mechanism at the related cubicle. The switching processes are then performed as with a manual switch operation.

A t S F 6 insulated switchgear which open via burst discs in case of an internal arc fault, the environmental effects have to be considered. O bserve the pressure capacity ex posed to the surrounding building as same depends on the operating pressure of the pressure release device. H igh operating pressures may result in a destruction of the walls of the building, since brick walls only have a low pressure resistance (1-2,5k P a). In case of an ex isting cable duct (2) (minimum 3 volume ~ 1,1 m , minimum cross section = 2 0,25 m ) with an outward opening (3) - same has to be used as pressure release area. B y installing two lay ers of ex panded metal (4) the arc gases are additionally cooled and the ex it of hot gases is reduced (illustr.3). W ithout a cable duct, the volume of the area behind and above the switchgear has to be used as pressure release area. For the installation of G.I.S.E.L.A switchgears in factory-assembled stations by Driescher, test reports concerning arc fault tests according to V DE 067 0 are available. For the installation into other stations the pressure resistance has to be clarified with the corresponding manufacturer. Here the released pressure load originating from the insulating gas section caused by an arc fault has to be noticed.
