PLACES TO VISIT

ROCK GARDEN Chandigarh has the distinction of having the world acclaimed Rock Garden, a creation of a world class creator Mr. Nek Chand. It consists of art objects made from industrial and urban waste. It is the first of its kind in the world. So nothing is waste if we have the vision to see.

SUKHNA LAKE This man-made Lake is situated in the foothills of Shivalik Range and offers an ideal place for quiet communication with Nature. It also offers boating and other boating and other water sports facilities.

LEISURE VALLEY A lesser known aspect of Chandigarh is that is one of the few cities of the world with well-planned landscaping. An 8 k m linear park runs through the city.

MUSEUM & ART GALLERY This has the largest collection of the world famous Gandhara (Buddhist) Sculpture after Lahore. It also has large number of miniature Indian paintings.

CULTURAL & THEATER SHOWS Chandigarh has a large number of auditoriums, some air-conditioned & some open air. The city boasts of 6 art galleries.

ABOUT PEC UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY


PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh, is one of the pioneer institutions of India. Since its inception, the institute has oriented itself towards reaching the zenith of educational excellence. The institute enjoys a distinct position of leadership in the field of technology and has become a national leader in imparting technical education. BRIEF HISTORY After partition of the country, the Punjab College of Engineering & Technology, Lahore (Formerly known as the Maclagan Engineering College) of the pre-partitioned Punjab remained in Pakistan. A part o f it shifted to India under the name of East Punjab Engineering College. From December 1947, it functioned in the premises of Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee now known as Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. In 1950, the word East was dropped and the college was renamed as Punjab Engineering College. At the end of the year 1953, the college shifted to its own premises built at Chandigarh and started functioning here from January, 1954. In 1994, this institution was adjudged the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers. Up to1962, the institute comprised of engineering departments of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Thereafter the institute expanded and five new departments in the fields of Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering were added gradually. Recently a new department of Information Technology has been added. In the year 1957, Highway Engineering was started as the first post graduate course in the institute. Gradually other post-graduate courses were added and presently there are eleven post-graduate courses leading to Masters of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering (Highways), Civil Engineering (Irrigation and Hydraulics), Civil Engineering (Structures), Environmental Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Production Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronic Product Design & Technology, Industrial Materials & Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering for postgraduate studies exist for regular as well as for part time students. The institute has facilities for research work in certain selected fields, for those pursuing Ph.D. degree. The institute also offers consultancy services in different disciplines. PEC was conferred the Deemed University status in 2004. It has been renamed as PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh on June 4, 2009.

LOCATION The institute is situated in Sector 12 towards the northern end of Chandigarh, at the confluence of Vidya Path and Vigyan Path. The premises of the institute are within a few minutes walk from the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat, the Panjab University and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI). The campus is 9 kms from the Chandigarh Railway Station and 7 Kms from the main Bus Stand.

CAMPUS The campus is spread over 146 acres of lush lawns, wide roads and spread out to form a self contained community in idyllic surroundings. It is divided into various functional zones like hostels, the main college building, Administrative Block, Residential Complex for staff and faculty and a shopping centre. In addition to lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and drawing halls, the institute has an auditorium, library, computer centre, reading rooms, workshops and well equipped laboratories. The institute has spacious playgrounds, tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool, gymnasium and a students centre. There is a branch of State Bank of India as well as Punjab National bank (with ATM facility) and a post office in the campus. Adequate hostel facilities for both boys and girls are available.

COMPUTER FACILITIES

In addition to the computer labs available in the institute, it is expected from you to make maximum use for your laptops for which new Wi-Fi zones are available. Following are the locations at which provision for the Wi-Fi Connectivity is being provided: 1. Two new Computing labs (above College Canteen) 2. College Canteen 3. Auditorium The institute has a consortium of 21 well equipped computational labs for imparting high quality computational service to the students and staff. The institute also has its own Computer Centre with four labs having more than sixty Pentium-IV based computers along with various other facilities such as Printer, Plotters, Scanners, LCD Projector, and CD Writers etc. High speed Internet access with a speed of I Mbps (1 :) via a lease line is available in all the departments. The departments are well connected to the central servers of the Computer Centre by the means of ATM backbone LAN. The Centre administers the computational and network services and is well equipped with 3 Xeon based Linux Servers and two Sun Ultra Enterprise Workstations as well. In addition to it, the Centre has a large collection of System & Application Software such as MS Office 2000, MS Visual Studio 6.0, Novell Network 4.11 Windows XP/98SE. NT server 4.0 Auto CAD, Solaris 8, Oracle 8i etc. The institute is also one of the trustees of Department of Electronics & Computer Centre (formerly RCC, Chandigarh). The students and staff of the institute have free access to many computational facilities of DOEACC and the also make arrangements for imparting training to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Punjab Engineering College.

CENTRAL LIBRARY The Central Library is housed in an area of about 27000 sq. feet and is organized into various sections, which are manned by professionally qualified staff. With a collection of about 106000 volumes in Science and Technology, catering to the needs of about 2000 members (both faculty and students), imparting/pursuing studies in nine different branches of engineering, the library has continuously acquired text books and reference books. To keep its readers abreast with the latest information in the technology, the library subscribed to 108 technical Journals (Indian & Foreign) in print form in the current year. Also the library is a member of INDEST Consortium under the Ministry of HRD. The Consortium offers online access to a number of technical journals through the under-mentioned portals: IEL Online : http://ieexplore.ieee.org ASCE Journals : http;//www.pubs.asce.org ASME Journals : http://ww.asme.org Having centrally air-conditioning facility with 250 seats in two spacious Reading Halls for reticent reading for its readers, the library functions from 9.00 AM to 8/11 11.00 PM, with an open access system to maximize the use of library resources. The Central Library also has a Multimedia Section to make use of the most popular mode of education i.e. Electronic Media, with the following equipment and collection of 450 CDs, 35 floppies and 50 video cassettes on various disciplines of technology. Online network connection has already been given to the library. The library has acquired Engineering Index& Encyclopedia Britannica on CD-ROM. All B.E. & M.E. students are entitled to draw 3 & 4 books respectively from the main library for a period of 10 days. Besides B.E. (General Category) Students can draw 3 books for one semester from the book bank and SC/ST category students are given 6 books per student for full semester from the SC/ST Book Bank.

OTHER INFORMATION

MEDICAL FACILITIES The institute has its own dispensary where the medical facilities exist for the students and staff. In addition to day-to-day attendance to ailments, special attention is paid to the health of the students.

SHOPPING CENTRE The Shopping Centre of the Institute consists of general merchant shop, juice stall, Electrical appliances shop, stationery shop, chemist, Verka milk bar, tailoring shop, hair-dresser, Computerized Post Office and branches of State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank with ATM facilities.

TRAVEL CONCESSION Travel Concession by Rail/Air is admissible to the bonafide students of the institute to visit their Home Town during vacation, for training and paper reading etc. Day scholars are also eligible for concessional bus pass for commuting between the institute and their homes.

STUDENTS ACTIVITIES CENTER Welcome to Students Activities Center at PEC. Get ready for an exciting life at PEC. PEC not only offers an intensive academic program, but also extensive co-curricular opportunities under the office of Dean Student Welfare which is instrumental in coordinating the activities in the following areas. 1. College Dispensary The Office of Dean Students Welfare (DSW) fosters learning experience for all students at PEC in the areas of intellectual, personal and social development that occur beyond the classroom. Through collaborative work with students, DSW seeks to create a variety of opportunities which promote faculty and student interaction, encourage student responsibility and concern for others, and inculcate the development of essential life skills allowing students to establish meaningful relationships within the PEC community and beyond.

STUDENTS EXECUTIVE COUNCIL Students Executive Council is constituted each year to expeditiously deal with the problems of the students. Student members are derived from different constituencies. The constituencies have been so designed that the elected representatives from these constituencies can realistically present the interest and problems of the students concerning all areas of their life, namely, Curricular, Extra curricular, Cultural, Sports, Hostel and Mess etc.

STUDENT COUNSELLING SERVICE Student Counseling Service operates through Chairman Counseling Service whom you are free to meet for any of your problems. Your time at PEC will be a significant period of transition in your life. Although, transitions can be desired and exciting, they also force change and require adjustments, which sometimes can be little challenging. Occasionally, the problems may be overwhelmin g or the challenges too great to be met peacefully. But growth comes only through facing challenges. Through our counseling cell we seek to help you meet these challenges with comfort and ease.

SPORTS FACILITIES 1. The Institute lays considerable emphasis on students participation in various games, sports and track and field activities. The spacious grounds of the Institute are laid out into playfields fro Cricket, Hockey, Football, Handball, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, etc. Facilities have also been provided for Yoga, Weightlifting, Wrestling. A Gymnasium equipped with modern scientific machines like Multi-exerciser is available for the use of students. 2. A Swimming Pool and two Squash Courts are available for the use of the students. 3. Lecturers in Physical Education and coaches are available for scientific teaching, training, and coaching in various games and sports and physical fitness programs.

TRAINNING AND PLACEMENT CELL The goal of Training & Placement Cell is to provide employment opportunities & world class training to PEC students in leading organizations. It is the most happening place for the final year students.

industry/institutions during 6 Semester. The students of the institute undergo their training at various prestigious organizations. The students act as a channel of communication with the industries.

PLACEMENTS All the reputed organizations including MNCs are coming to the Institute for campus recruitment. To achieve its goal, the Training & Placement Cell works towards recognizing the core competencies of students. It works through a close knit organization and has a structure which conveys information to the students at the fastest possible rate. A common placement brochure for all branches is published. The Training & Placement Cell firmly believes in Industry-Institute Interaction. In order to accomplish Industry-Institute Interaction, it organizes technical talks and national seminars to provide a platform for the budding engineers to interact with professionals from various industries. It arranges for industrial problems to be worked on by students as part of their projects. It also takes suggestions from members of industry regarding designing/changing of curriculum. The institute has signed MOUs with many industrial organizations and industrial chambers. Technical paper presentation contests are held in collaboration with industries to discuss new developments and trends.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS) This institute is authorized for four National Service Scheme Units. It enrolls volunteers who have the urge to do Social Service. Any student can enroll in this unit as an alternative to Sports or N.C.C. The students who have done previous N.S.S. work and otherwise satisfy the College N.S.S. Committee are given preference. The volunteers are required to carry out the 1 day and 10 day Training Camps as per program.

NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC) The N.C.C. Infantry Unit has been started in the Institute from the year 1977 with a limited enrollment. Students have to adjust themselves to the timing and training program of this unit. Enrolment is made at the time of admission in the Institute.

HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION Hostel accommodation for Girls Students is available in the Kalpana Chawla Hostel and Vindhya Hostel situated within the campus. There are four hostels for boys namely Shivalik, Kurukshetra, Himalaya, Aravali. Nilgiri Apartments are available for research scholars and families. Each hostel is self contained with amenities such as reading room, indoor games room, lounge and dining hall with a mess. The messes in all hostels are run on cooperative basis. The hostels are looked after by DSW through the Committee of wardens and deputy wardens. The hostel and cooperative messing arrangements will be under the supervision of Warden, Deputy Warden and a committee of students residing in the hostel. Students are required to conform to all Hostel/Mess Rules which may be enforced by Dean of Student Welfare from time to time as approved by the Director. The allotted Hostel accommodation may be cancelled during vacations as and when decided by the committee of wardens.

STUDENTS CHARTER

INTRODUCTION: The Students Charter is a document which aims to set out the standards of service that can be expected by students and what the institute can expect of students in return. It is an expression of the close working relationship between the institute administration, faculty and students and their shared commitment to maintaining and enhancing excellence in the educational experience of its students. ADMISSION & REGISTRATION: The institute will follow and administer a fair, transparent and efficient admission procedure. 1. Information for prospective students about programs of study, entry requirements, fees, services, facilities and entitlements will be clear, accurate and as up-to-date as possible. 2. All applications will be handled fairly, promptly and efficiently and in accordance with approved procedures. 3. The institute is expected to provide clear advance instructions on registration and other essential information on services and facilities. It will also provide appropriate student induction or orientation program that introduces them to the institute and their program of study. Students are expected to read carefully any information provided and follow the relevant instructions.

TEACHING, LEARNING AND ACADEMIC GUIDANCE: The institute will provide an effective learning and teaching environment, guidance and supervision provided by a vast range of learning resources. Students on their part will take responsibility for their own learning and pursue their academic program with positive commitment. 1. The departments will provide for students, prior to registration, clear information about their program of study, content and availability of courses. 2. Any changes in the structure or content of programs of study and related courses or modules will be communicated to the students in advance at the earliest possible opportunity. 3. The institute will ensure that teaching takes place in suitable and adequately equipped rooms or laboratories according to the announced academic calendar and that the lectures and laboratory sessions are held at scheduled times. 4. Teaching departments will provide help and advice about the learning resources available, such as libraries, and access to online library catalogues and networked information sources. Students on their part will: 1. Read and note the information and guidance provided for them throughout the duration of the program of study and act on it accordingly. 2. Comply with any institute regulation related to their program of study including attendance, examinations and use of learning facilities. 3. Meet regularly with their tutors or supervisors. 4. Notify their tutors or supervisors, or appropriate departmental representative, at the earliest opportunity, if there are extenuating circumstances that prevent them from satisfying any of the above requirements.

STUDENT ACADEMIC REPRESENTATION AND EVALUATION: The institute will seek and respond to student views on their educational experience 1 All departments will have Faculty-Student Committee in which students will be represented and which will meet regularly or as frequently as necessary, to discharge their business effectively. 2 All taught programs will be evaluated by students each semester or each year according to the procedure evolved by the Faculty-Students Committee. The relevant evaluations will be made by the Head of the Department for intended correctional action in the spirit of improving the standards of pedagogic skills. Students will: Support the efforts of Student-Faculty Committee through active participation. Respond honestly and constructively to evaluation questionnaires and other requests from Departments for their views on the program of study and other aspects of educational experience.

ACADEMIC SERVICES The institute will strive to provide a high standard of academic services to all students. 1 All students will have access to the comprehensive library services, computing facilities and appropriate support. The working hours of these services and facilities will enable the students to meet the requirements of their programs of study or research. 2 All students in need of English language support and communication skills will have access to such services that will be provided by the institute. Students will: Use academic services responsibly by following all the regulations intended for their use, with due consideration for the needs and rights of other users. Provide feedback for their betterment when requested to do so.

STUDENT SERVICES The institute will provide quality services for students. 1 The institute will have one-stop information/enquiry service which will provide the prospectuses and other useful publications. 2 The Counseling Service will provide a professional and confidential counseling service to all students and will help the staff/faculty involved in the welfare of students including personal tutors and hostel wardens. 3 The institute will promote an awareness and understanding of, and will respond affectively and appropriately toot the additional support needs of physically handicapped students. Students will: Read and note the information provided to them by the institute on Student Services and make use of them when needed or advised to do so by their personal tutors. Keep the appointments with the institute support service staff whenever required.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND SECURITY 1. All students will comply with the institutes Health and Safety Code of Practice that provides general guidelines and framework for safe working environment in the institute campus. 2. The institute will assign a high priority to student security and safety. Necessary additional measures will be undertaken in this regard if the existing campus design, lighting and landscape are inadequate in this respect. The range of safety and security services available to students will be widely publicized.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT The institute takes a very serious view on the subject of sexual harassment by any member of its staff. The institute will notify the name of a women officer who can be directly contacted by the students for any complaint.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Students will be able to participate in a range of sporting, cultural, personal development and other extra-curricular activities. College will provide students with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting, cultural, personal development and other extra-curricular activities. For this purpose, it will provide and maintain good facilities and resources.

COMPLAINTS, APPEALS AND GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES The institute recognizes that their will be occasions when students feel that their legitimate expectations are not being recognized or met and that there is need to address these circumstances. For this purpose, the institute will clearly have stated appeal, complaints and grievance redressed procedure. Students can expect the institute to deal with a complaint fairly, confidentially, without any fear of recrimination and in a timely manner. Students will: Obey the law of the land. Observe the provisions of the institute regulations. Be sensitive to needs of others and uphold the good reputation of their institute.
