TESCO Casing Drive System (CDS)

Onshore, Offshore, Worldwide Developed for the rigors of CASING DRILLING, the TESCO Casing Drive System (CDS) delivers all of the advantages of Top Drive drilling to the Casing Running operation. Replacing power tongs and traveling elevators, the CDS allows simultaneous rotation, reciprocation and circulation of the casing string at any time, greatly increasing safety and the chance of getting casing into troublesome wellbores. TESCO now provides the CDS as part of a fullservice Casing Running offering. Easily installed on any manufacturers Top Drive system and with a track record of millions of feet, the TESCO CDS is the industrys most versatile and proven integrated drive tool. The TESCO CDS Is quickly installed on virtually any Top Drive system, electric or hydraulic, with typically no modifications to any existing drilling equipment. Greatly reduces the amount of equipment and personnel required to run casing, provides a high level of mechanization keeping personnel out of the line of fire and places the Casing Running operation under the control of the Driller. Assures the ability to get casing to bottom through ability to simultaneously lower casing, while rotating and circulating.

Features and Operations

An integrated link tilt system incorporating extendable bails and hydraulic single joint elevators with a safety interlock, enables the casing to be picked up at the V-door, eliminating manual single joint elevators and greatly reducing effort, fatigue and injury risk from personnel-machinery proximity. The integrated link tilt system positions the single joint over the hole and supports the casing while lowering the CDS and Top Drive, eliminating the need for a stabber in the derrick. The CDS grapples engage the casing, and the joint is made up using the Top Drive. A smooth make-up with no bending load and precise control on final torque is easily attained by use of the Top Drive system. Once the connection is assembled circulation can be initiated and the CDS used to rotate and/or reciprocate the entire string of casing, greatly reducing the chance of stuck pipe. The CDS replaces traveling elevators, and supporting the entire casing string load, is used to lower the casing string into the well. When used with a slip/spider assembly the CDS interlock eliminates the chance of dropping the string in the well bore by not allowing the CDS to release the pipe until the slips are set. HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT In applications where the Top Drives hydraulic or rigs system is inadequate or unavailable to operate the CDS a zone-rated independent HPU can be provided to supply the required hydraulics to the CDS. TORQUE MONITORING AND RECORDING For premium connections or as added security to qualify connections, the wireless TesTORK torque sub monitoring and reporting system can be provided. TesTORK captures, graphs and reports torque versus turns and/or time with a comprehensive acquisition and reporting package which is a valuable element in the audit trail. TesTORK can be used with virtually any electric (AC or DC) or hydraulic Top Drive system.

The Casing Drive System

The TESCO CDS adds real value through improving safety through reduced risks associated with Casing Running, and by adding performance options that help ensure casing gets to bottom... For all of the same reasons why a Top Drive improves efficiency and enhances safety, the CDS virtually eliminates the chance of unscheduled events, such as: Setting casing short of the casing point due to hole obstructions. Stuck pipe as can occur when the casing string remains stationary. Well control situations that can occur due to hole surging or inadequate casing fill. Use of circulating swedges and the attendant risk of connection damage. Working pipe through tight spots, across ledges or bridges by using the power tongs to rotate the casing. Pulling casing following a refusal and subsequent hole conditioning, drillpipe work and associated re-running of the casing. ELIMINATION OF CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT By using the capabilities of the Top Drive system in the rig, the CDS also eliminates risks associated with equipment and other operations, such as: Power tongs, suspension lines or back-up lines in the derrick or on the rig floor. Large traveling elevators. Elevated work platform or scaffolding at the rig floor. Separate fill-up/circulating tool or line. Personnel working at heights or out of the Drillers line of sight. Most importantly, by eliminating the need for workers at heights or out of the Drillers line of sight, the safety of any Casing Running operation can be greatly enhanced.

Proven tools for the Casing Drive System

Casing Reaming can be a viable option in areas where hole problems are commonplace and where simply circulating the casing is not adequate enough to convey the string to the desired casing point. In these applications, as the world-leader in CASING DRILLING, TESCOs proprietary technology can be employed to greatly increase the chances of getting the casing to the desired depth. To help ensure a successful job, TESCO can provide: TESCOs New Multiple Plug Launcher Swivel Cement Head Tool can be custom assembled for any application requiring a ball/ dart to be pumped through the drill string and casing. Suitable for top drive or rotary rig use, the number of ball/dart chambers assembled are restricted only by the height limitations of the rig derrick. One durable end wrench will open and close each ball/ dart chamber or the chamber may be fitted with air actuators for remote operations. The chambers and top/bottom sub assembly require no makeup torque, making field servicing and reloading quick and efficient. Operational modeling using TESCOs CASING DRILLER, CASING DRILLING software to analyze torque, drag, hydraulics, fatigue and buckling loads. Proprietary Casing Accessories designed to enable conventional casing, including API threaded connections, to be reamed into the well without compromising the integrity of the casing string or connections. These include MLT rings to increase the torque capacity of API connections; Hydro-Form centralizers to ensure proper mechanical centralization of the casing for cementing; the new Warthog Casing Reaming Shoe. For extremely difficult holes, the full CASING DRILLING BHA can be employed. After conventionally drilling the interval a CASING DRILLING Profile Nipple can be installed as part of the casing string, and a full suite of CASING DRILLING tools can then be landed in the string. The power and ability of a full drilling assembly can be brought to the reaming operation, virtually guaranteeing that the string will reach full total depth.

Installing the innovative Warthog tool at the bottom of the casing string can maintain aggressive reaming operations that help get casing to bottom. A cementing float installed and a drillable nose cone come as standard features.

Field-installable MLT RINGS offer value-added API connection enhancements to increase connection performance in handling torsion loads for reaming and rotating equipment.

TESCO hydraulic elevators provide complete automation of the casing running service. Automated single joint elevators eliminate pinch points and personnel proximity with the pipe and equipment. A weight activated safety latch prevents the elevators from opening when a joint of casing is set in the elevators. One set of TESCO single joint elevators can run multiple sizes of pipe simply by changing the inserts. Capacity: 6 ton Sizes: 4-1/2 to 13-3/8
