ASTM C494/C494M-05 Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete

1. Scope 1.1 This specification covers materials for use as chemical admixtures to be added to hydraulic-cement concrete mixtures in the field for the purpose or purposes indicated for the seven types as follows: 1.1.1 Type AWater-reducing admixtures, 1.1. Type B!etarding admixtures, 1.1." Type C#ccelerating admixtures, 1.1.$ Type DWater-reducing and retarding admixtures, 1.1.% Type EWater-reducing and accelerating admixtures, 1.1.& Type FWater-reducing, and high range admixtures 1.1.' Type GWater-reducing, high range, and retarding admixtures. 1. This specification stipulates tests of an admixture with suitable concreting materials as described in 11.1-11." or with cement, po((olan, aggregates, and an air-entraining admixture proposed for specific wor) *11.$+. ,nless specified otherwise by the purchaser, the tests shall be made using concreting materials as described in 11.1-11.". -ote 1.t is recommended that, whenever practicable, tests be made using the cement, po((olan, aggregates, air-entraining admixture, and the mixture proportions, batching se/uence, and other physical conditions proposed for the specific wor) *11.$+ because the specific effects produced by chemical admixtures may vary with the properties and proportions of the other ingredients of the concrete. 0or instance, Types 0 and 1 admixtures may exhibit much higher water reduction in concrete mixtures having higher cement factors than that listed in 1 .1.1. 2ixtures having a high range water reduction generally display a higher rate of slump loss. When high-range admixtures are used to impart increased wor)ability *& to 3-in. slump 41%5 to 55-mm6+, the effect may be of limited duration, reverting to the original slump in "5 to &5 min depending on factors normally affecting rate of slump loss. The use of chemical admixtures to produce high-slump *flowing+ concrete is covered by 7pecification 8 151'.

-ote The purchaser should ensure that the admixture supplied for use in the wor) is e/uivalent in composition to the admixture sub9ected to test under this specification *see 7ection &, ,niformity and :/uivalence+. -ote "#dmixtures that contain relatively large amounts of chloride may accelerate corrosion of prestressing steel. 8ompliance with the re/uirements of this specification does not constitute assurance of acceptability of the admixture for use in prestressed concrete. 1." This specification provides for three levels of testing. 1.".1 Level 1;uring the initial approval stage, proof of compliance with the performance re/uirements defined in Table 1 demonstrates that the admixture meets the re/uirements of this specification. #dmixtures *except for Types <, 8, and :+ shall /ualify for provisional compliance when the alternative compressive strength re/uirements in Table 1 are met. .f subse/uent test results at & months or one year fail to meet the standard re/uirement of 155 = of reference strength, the compliance of the admixture to this standard is withdrawn and all users of the admixture shall be notified immediately. ,niformity and e/uivalence tests of 7ection & shall be carried out to provide results against which later comparisons can be made *7ee -ote $+. Note 0>"3 1 ?#llowing for provisional compliance while retaining longer term compressive strength re/uirements promotes more rapid /ualification of new materials, but also provides assurance that new admixture technologies will not exhibit unexpected longer term performance. The alternative compressive strength re/uirements in are based on statistical analysis of 15" 7pecification 8 $@$A8 $@$2 evaluation tests. The alternative re/uirements correspond to a @@ = probability of passing subse/uent test age re/uirements. 1.". Level 2Bimited retesting is described in %. , %. .1 and %. . . Croof of compliance with the re/uirements of demonstrates continued conformity of the admixture with the re/uirements of the specification. 1."." Level 30or acceptance of a lot or for measuring uniformity within or between lots, when specified by the purchaser, the uniformity and e/uivalence tests of 7ection shall be used. 1.$ The values stated in either inch-pound or 7. units shall be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact e/uivalents? therefore, each system must be used independently of the other, without combining values in any way.

1.% The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes *excluding those in tables and figures+ shall not be considered as re/uirements of the standard. 1.& The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method sections, 7ections 11-13 of this 7pecification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety on erns! if any! asso iated "ith its use# $t is the responsi%ility of the user of this standard to esta%lish appropriate safety and health pra ti es and deter&ine the appli a%ility of re'ulatory li&itations prior to use#
