he oil business is dominated by big companies. When you think oil, there are plenty of household names that come to mind, but there arent a lot of hotshot or hydroexcavation rms whose names are on the tip of most peoples tongues. H2X, the contractor featured in this issue of GOMC, started small but their name is quickly spreading. Brothers Kelly

Success hasnt come easy, but they have certainly had their share. Thirteen years in, the company has 70 employees and 30 hydroexcavation trucks working all over the Southwest and other regions of the country. H2X might not be a wellknown name to the average housewife in Wisconsin, but people in the oil and gas industry are certainly learning the company.

installations, but still handle the typical residential and commercial calls. Hotshot drivers deliver to other clients as well. Many of these companies start out serving a different client base, but the bottom line is the oil and gas market provides a huge source of potential business for diversied contractors to take advantage of. Its not an easy industry to break into, but those who do and prove that they can work safely and efciently will reap great rewards. The stories in this months issue of GOMC should offer you some examples and insight on how to generate more business and build a stronger reputation in the oilelds. I hope it helps your business grow. MORE ON THE EXPO The Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo is almost here, but its not too late to make plans to attend. Once again, this issue features previews of the events and attractions surrounding the Expo, being held Feb. 24-27 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. The Expo offers a wealth of education opportunities, as well as the opportunity to meet manufacturers and kick the tires on everything from hydroexcavators to vacuum pumps. The exhibit oor is packed with all the latest tools and technology to help you make your business stronger. And its all in one place. If youre still on the fence, jump over to www.pumpershow.com and check out all the educational seminars, exhibitors and everything youll need to plan a last-minute trip to Indy. You wont be disappointed, and your business will be better for it. Enjoy this months issue. I hope to see you in Indy. GOMC

and Mike Clark came to the industry from very different professional backgrounds, and while both worked in the oilelds to pay their way through college, neither had any experience in hydroexcavation. Kelly secured nancial backing, but in less than two years the brothers bought out their partners and were on their own. So while the industry may be dominated by heavyweights, there are plenty of opportunities for startups to nd their niche and enjoy great success. The Clarks are a testament to that. Their story also casts a light on the variety of opportunities for oileld service providers. Its not just dedicated oileld services like capturing are gases that are in demand. H2X provides hydroexcavation services for the oil and gas industry, but the company also serves municipalities and other outside private clients. Making True

Watching Kelly Clark cut an inspection trench with a 2,200 psi vacuum tube and water nozzle, its difcult to imagine him in a suit and tie trying a case in court. But it was his job as a lawyer that led him to start H2X hydroexcavation in 2000.
Instead of advising a client to sue for unpaid invoices from a contractor, Kelly recognized the lack of competition in a promising market and partnered up with the client to start a hydroexcavation business. It didnt take long for Kellys brother, Mike, to leave his 25-year television career. A year and a half later, the Clarks bought out their partners and have been running H2X ever since. Though there is some crossover, Kelly, the COO, maintains the operations side and works in the eld. Mike, the CEO, covers the administrative and ofce end of the business. Turns out Kelly who calls himself a recovering attorney had good instincts. The company has grown to 70 employees and 30 trucks working in locations all over the Southwest and into other regions of the country. SELLING THEMSELVES The jump from courtroom to construction site wasnt as dramatic as it sounds. The Clarks come from a three-generation oil family. When I was 17, I started working derricks on a drilling rig, Kelly says. That paid my way through college and law school.

When we rst got started in 2001-2002, we werent just selling our business, we had to sell the industry. I put 100,000 miles on my pickup in a year, and it was boots on the ground.
Kelly Clark He gured hydroexcavating was a sure thing when he learned how it had boomed in Canada since 1990, and that the industry was just getting started in the U.S. With laborers wielding shovels as the only option in many situations, Kelly knew companies would be interested in a faster alternative that wouldnt damage underground lines. His rst client was BP , a large oil company that had changed its ground disturbance policy in Colorado any excavation deeper than 4 inches near its facilities had to be hydroexcavated.

They had line strikes and damage and had seen property damage. They wanted to eliminate that, Kelly explains. He credits Neil McClean of Hydro Excavation Consulting for training him how to run the equipment for his rst job. Kelly recognized the industrys potential and shared his enthusiasm with his brother Mike. It took a few times of him explaining what this was, says Mike, who also had worked in the oilelds as a college student. Finally, after about the fourth conversation, I knew what he was talking about and thought it was a good idea. I was ready for a change. He and Kelly exchanged their ofce clothes for work clothes, and warm ofces for the great outdoors at -20 degrees Fahrenheit in January in Colorado. Kelly and I said we wouldnt ask anybody to do something that we werent willing to do, Mike says. We wanted to see how it works and make sure we understood it and what the issues were because we were going to be hiring more people. We just felt like we needed to be knowledgeable. With skills and equipment in place, the only thing needed was customers. When we rst got started in 2001-2002, we werent just selling our business, we had to sell the industry, Kelly explains. I put 100,000 miles on my pickup in a year, and it was boots on the ground.

Its also safer because no one has to go into a hole. Hes made true believers of many clients when they discover how much money he can save them in losses. $800,000 on hydroexcavating this year, but if they hit something, they might spend $5 million, Kelly says. He recalls a project where his workers were trenching an area for a big renerys addition. Management started getting nervous about the cost and told the crew to stop. Kelly negotiated another half hour of work, and they uncovered a high-pressure re hydrant waterline. Literally, the backhoe was 10 feet from it ready to go. And if we hadnt done that, those guys estimated it would have cost them between $5 million and $10 million because they would have had to shut down a third of the renery, Kelly says. We made a believer out of them. He recalls another company putting in a new pipeline that didnt believe in the value of the process. Kelly stopped to hand out business cards when he saw a large eet of equipment and 30 to 40 workers. The next day they hit an oil pipeline, burned up equipment and a house, set a gas well on re and melted highline wires that put 350,000 customers out of electricity. It was a $10 million day in the red. About 60 percent of H2Xs work is with the oil industry, working in the eld, at pumping stations and small gas plants. H2X provides three main services. Workers hydroexcavate holes to look for utility and pipelines. They dig inspection trenches as narrow as 4 inches around

the perimeter of areas to be excavated. And they dig pier holes or foundations in areas where safe digging with traditional methods is impossible. We can dig a very precise hole, such as a hexagon thats 10 feet across, Kelly says. Such holes often become forms for pouring concrete. He adds there is no cutoff to the size of the project. Hydroexcavation is all about safety and is specic to the area. Bigger projects have included digging a 60- by 90foot hole 22 feet deep. The job had six trucks working 24 hours a day for 17 days. GROWING THE FLEET H2X has grown in plateaus six trucks for the rst three years, then 12 to 18 trucks until the economic downturn. The company held its own for a while, then grew again to the present with 30 hydroexcavators, including a few rentals. (continued)

COMMUNICATING CROSS COUNTRY

The work of hydroexcavation comes down to two guys an operator and helper driving to a work site with a truck. But setting up the logistics keeping crews busy, constantly moving three to five trucks at a time requires organization and communication. For H2X, that starts with owners Kelly and Mike Clark. The brothers work in the same office building and communicate freely. Kelly works on the operations side and deals with the trucks. Mike makes sure the insurance and finances are in place and that the company projects the right image through its website, equipment and employees. The brothers plan business trips so that one of them is always in the office. Because their 70 employees are scattered across the country, they schedule operations conference calls twice a week with regional office managers and business development team members to stay informed about operations and marketing. Their communication and emphasis on connecting with employees ground the business as it grows across the country. Kelly and I have been working together long enough to finish each others sentences, Mike says. A lot of brothers couldnt work as well together as they do, Kelly notes. We complement each other, and we like to have fun.

>> Waste rolls out of the raised vacuum tank of a Vacall hydroexcavator after a job. BELOW: H2X crew members hydroexcavate a trench for pending utility work.

What we try to do is keep a 10 to 20 percent cushion with rentals. If we have four or ve months that slow down, we can send a few trucks back to the rental company. If the growth is sustained, then we order trucks, Kelly says. The 10 newest hydroexcavators in the companys eet are Vacall units built on Peterbilt 367 chassis with ISX Cummins engines. H2X owns both warm- and cold-weather packages so they can work in the South and in the Bakken and other northern areas. Most of the trucks have 5,400 cfm blowers, General 25 gpm pumps, 12-yard debris bodies and 1,300-gallon tanks. When the nozzle and water ow are set right, the water runs out at the same rate the debris tank lls, usually in about half a day. The Clarks work on nozzle designs with StoneAge Inc. in Durango, Colo. They have a mix of straight two- and three-jet nozzles and turbo nozzles, which are more suitable for clay soils. The oldest unit in the H2X eet is a 2006 Hi-Vac Corporation hydroexcavator on a Volvo chassis with a Cat pump. The Clarks also worked with Vactor Manufacturing to design the HXX, a unit built specically for hydroexcavating. The companys eet also includes vacuum boxes for projects where material cant be stockpiled nearby. The company also has low-friction aluminum vacuum pipe for special projects, such as the 4,000 yards of earth they moved to dig tunnels under a nursing home to solve a soil problem wreaking havoc on the septic and plumbing systems. Crew members always wear retractable fall protection gear when working on deep hole projects. TALENTED CREW One of our keys to success is having an employee base that is experienced in many different working environments. They are able to adapt and use what theyve seen elsewhere to get the job done, Kelly says. Some of our guys take it to almost a form of art. They take pride in developing skills to combine the right pressure, water volume and movement for precise, efcient digging. Workers receive specialized training when needed, such as the 40 hours

The more people use hydroexcavation, the more they want to. The levels of liability just keep going up and up. Its a matter of time before everyone is using it.
Mike Clark required to work HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) jobs removing contaminated soil. They are trained to follow specic site rules, policies and protocols, such as wearing H2S or four-way monitors when working in the oilelds. But much of the training is on the job, working with experienced employees. We move our guys around on purpose. Well have guys in California doing municipal work. If it looks like they are working out, then we send them someplace else like a mine in Casper, Wyo., Kelly says. Some of H2Xs employees have been with the company for a decade. To retain them, the Clarks treat them fairly, pay well and provide health insurance. They are also working on setting up a 401(k) plan. Personnel is one of our biggest challenges. Were competing for the right people with some big names in the oil business, Mike says. Fortunately many of the workers prefer working for a smaller company where the owners know their employees. Both of us know how we want to be treated, he adds. We instill a sense of pride in the work we do. Because of that, H2X often gets bids based on their workers productivity and safety records, not because their per hour rate is less. DIGGING INTO THE FUTURE Kelly notes that 70 percent of todays clients are familiar with hydroexcavation. The rest call because their engineer requires it. Clients learn about H2X through its

CHANGING WITH THE TIMES

The industry is growing and evolving, and so is your trade show
By Bob Kendall

D
Bob Kendall co-founder of COLE Publishing.

uring late winter 1981, the rst annual Liquid Waste Haulers Equipment & Trade Show was held in Nashville, Tenn. The show was promoted to the 12,000-some readers of the recently launched Midwest Pumper. That very rst show was a huge success lauded by the couple hundred people who attended and a few dozen exhibitors. The following year, the Liquid Waste Haulers Equipment & Trade Show would see its rst name change. The change was subtle: we only added one word

International. Because, after all, we didnt want to shun our friends from Canada. In 1984, COLE Publishing launched an additional title Cleaner aimed squarely at sewer and drain cleaning contractors. This meant the show had now become more than just a liquid waste event. It would take more than a decade, but in the mid-1990s the International Liquid Waste Haulers Show again changed its name. This time, we would fully encompass everything we stood for The Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International. May no man, woman, child, country or profession ever be excluded again! So we thought. The event would continue to grow, eventually hundreds of attendees became thousands, and dozens of exhibitors became hundreds. The Expo hopped through several cities Nashville, Biloxi, New Orleans, Dallas, Fort Worth and Louisville. We even tried a few western

destinations and visited Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Phoenix and Long Beach. Now, after more than 20 years, it is time to make another name change. Were not just a show for pumpers and cleaners weve grown and evolved into so much more, and so have you. The industry and profession has surpassed what many of us could have ever imagined way back in 1979, when Pumper was delivered to mailboxes across a few Midwestern states. In 2015, the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International will become WWETT the Water and Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport show. A little better snapshot of what we have become and where we are heading. Its a show for an entire industry of hard-working people who maintain the ow in our sewer and water infrastructure, properly treat and dispose of wastewater, keep water safe, and our environment healthy. We havent forgotten our roots, we just planted them a little deeper and thanks to you theyll always have water. See you at WWETT 2015. GOMC

Through the years the name, technology and locations have changed, but the event has always been an industry favorite.

RELIABLE OFF-GRID POWER

Hybrid solar plus wind power solutions are enhancing the reliability of power on remote industrial sites
By Del Williams
WHEN CONSIDERING OFF-GRID, RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
to power sensors, meters, pumps, controllers and communication links at remote industrial sites, the options typically come down to two: solar or wind. Solar, an inexpensive option, is often selected. However, with the availability and decreasing cost of small, off-grid wind turbines that operate in even modest wind conditions, the better answer is now both. Hybrid systems that incorporate both solar panels and wind turbines, it turns out, form a perfect complementary relationship with each compensating for the weaknesses of the other system. Where solar is best during the daytime, wind power works throughout the night. Where solar is better through the summer months, wind power is better in winter. And on stormy and overcast days, wind power is the only option for generating power. CRITICAL CONCERN Maintaining continuous, reliable power at remote, off-grid substations is a critical concern in industries ranging from oil and gas to telecommunications, and mining to railroad. If power is lost, key measurement and monitoring equipment along with data communications can lead to production shutdowns, costing huge sums of money. An unplanned power outage can cost tens of thousands of dollars in lost production and unscheduled downtime, says Tony Kaspari, an electrical engineer at Beabout Company, which consults with industrial companies, such as oil and gas, water/wastewater and electric utilities in the Rocky Mountain area. Without continuous remote data, oil and gas producers, for example, might have to shut down production to ensure safety, Kaspari says. Integrating a $1,000 wind turbine with a new or existing solar power system can ensure that production stays online even during adverse weather conditions. While the power demands at some of these off-grid industrial sites and substations may not be large, connecting them to the grid is simply cost-prohibitive. Since it can cost anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000 per mile to run power poles or lay underground power cables to a remote site, it doesnt make sense to run power for small power requirements, says Brent Busenlehner, president of ReadyFlo Systems, a Corpus Christi, Texas-based system integrator of

remote power systems, automated control systems and integrated measurement/ production equipment. Solar power, though relatively inexpensive, is not always as reliable as advertised when paired with batteries for power storage. To generate power, solar panels must collect sunshine at sufcient intensity and at the right angle. This does not occur at night, when it is cloudy or overcast, and throughout much of the winter. If snow covers the panels, power is not generated until the snow melts or the solar panels are cleaned off. Remote power systems need to be designed for the worst case scenario, which is typically in the dead of winter, says Busenlehner. In winter, there is only an average of four to 4 1/2 hours of sun per day in South Texas, and only

three hours of sun per day in the Dakotas, according to the Department of Energy. In the worst case, there is no sun for potentially long periods of time. Wind power complements solar power because it often produces the most power precisely when solar power is reduced or unavailable, such as at night, in inclement weather and during winter. Wind often blows during long winter nights and is, on average, actually stronger in inclement weather. During winter, average wind speed is highest, as is air density, both factors that contribute to wind generating more power when solar power tends to be least available. COMBINING STRENGTHS To enhance power reliability and build in redundancy, many off-grid industrial substations are now being retrotted with small, off-grid wind turbines. A variety of models are available for areas with different wind speeds and climates. Turbines are

Adding wind power to a solar system could potentially double battery life because the batteries wont discharge as deeply, Busenlehner says. Extending battery life reduces system maintenance and replacement costs, and the savings can be signicant. According to Busenlehner, it is relatively easy to retrot a remote, off-grid site powered by solar only. With wind turbines, its as simple as wiring the leads from the turbine to the batteries and adding some fuses, switches and amp meters for equipment protection, he says. Its even easier to integrate solar and wind power into a brand new system. GOMC

designed to generate power at wind speeds as low as 6 mph, and can generate as much as 40 to 80 kWh a month per turbine depending on conditions. Turbines from PrimusWind Power, for example, one of several leading manufacturers, measure only about 4 feet in diameter, weigh about 13 pounds and cost only around $1,000 per unit. A single wind turbine is able to power several devices. If more power is required, several turbines can be combined together. Far from a new concept, small off-grid turbines have already been installed worldwide. If your industrial process or paycheck depends on having reliable remote power, then you need to look into adding a wind turbine to your existing solar-only system, or integrate it from scratch, says Busenlehner. At a minimum, with wind power you will have some power generated nearly every night when there will be zero solar energy to harvest. The combination extends system capacity and makes the worst case scenario, a power outage, unlikely. ADDING LIFE Another benet of adding wind power to a solar powered system is that it lengthens battery life by reducing the depth and frequency of discharge. Since off-grid industrial devices or substations are powered by wind when solar power is unavailable, this avoids drawing down the systems batteries and increases battery life signicantly.

Bakken Extra

ENJOYING THE SPOILS

Montana landll nds success in the waste from oil and gas operations across the Bakken
By Cory Dellenbach

NORM has been the key to the success of his business and the reason why his phone hasnt stopped ringing since the facility opened. HAVING AN IDEA Oakland got the idea for starting Oaks Disposal Services about two years ago while watching a drilling operation adjacent to his Montana property for several days. There was a drilling rig drilling right next to my land and they had to build a road going in there, so they went through my property. I got to talking to the drilling superintendent and he said if he were me hed build a landll, Oakland said. I didnt want to get into the junk business, but then he told me that they have to bring their drill cuttings to a landll. I got the idea from him and started the procedure that day. I went home and made some phone calls and started researching it.

usiness is booming for Ross and Tara Oakland after the couple opened Oaks Disposal Services in June 2013, making it the rst landll of its kind in Montana. Oaks Disposal Services is capable of disposing oileld waste generated during the drilling and production process. Were accepting drill cuttings, contaminated soils from oil spills and saltwater spills, frac sand and oil sludge that has solidied, says Ross Oakland.

The landll, located near Lindsay, Mont., is about 40 miles west of the North Dakota border. The facility is able to dispose of material containing NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material). We are disposing of waste that has NORM levels too high for other facilities in the area to accept other than Colorado or Idaho, Oakland says. This has led to many companies bringing material previously sent to Colorado to the facility. Oakland says being able to accept

Ross Oakland

To complete the facility, Oakland had to invest roughly $5 million and spend two years working with his consultants and engineering teams wade through the permitting paperwork required by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). It was a huge undertaking. They go through everything. There is an extensive review process to make sure you are able to do this nancially,

and mentally and you just have to be on top of your game, Oakland says. Im so happy we did this because now it is an environmentally safe facility. Designing the facility was Oaklands engineer Barry Damschen. Our facility has two liners in it, a leaching system and a stormwater detention pond, Oakland said. Northwest Linings and Geotextile Products Inc. based in Kent, Wash. supplied and installed the liners for the facility. Oakland devoted 130 acres to the facility. The lined portion is 23 acres and features a Geosynthetic clay liner, 60-mil textured HDPE liner, a geocomposite layer, a 16 ounce non-woven geotextile layer and several levels of gravel. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Oaks Disposal Services has capacity to last about 14 years or until reaching 2 million tons of waste. Each truck that comes into the landll typically averages 25 tons. Oakland says theyll accept the waste from anywhere as long as it meets his criteria of 5 percent hydrocarbons or less and NORM containing 30 pCi/ gm of Radium 226 and 228 or less. Were able to take it from anywhere, even Canada if they want to bring it down, he says. Theres getting to be more and more oil production and the wells are starting to get older now, so were seeing more waste coming in from those. Were the key facility for that. GOMC

Give the benets of using the product or service as they pertain to your prospects lives so they can determine just how extraordinary or revolutionary the product or service really is. 4. EVOKE IMAGES As you write, evoke more than one of the ve senses. Paint a picture with your words so prospects see, hear, smell, taste and feel what youre describing. Contrary to popular belief, the best promotional writers think in pictures, not words. They see the image they want to convey to their prospects, and thats what they write. If youre writing about business productivity, help your prospects hear the hustle of productivity and feel the rush of a sales call. Do more than just tell prospects whats going on. 5. ALWAYS MAKE A COMPELLING CALL TO ACTION What do you want the person reading your sales letter, brochure or other promotional piece to do? Buy your product? Call you for more information? Visit your website? Whatever action you want your prospects to take, state it clearly. Too many promotional pieces ramble on about all the features and benets of the product,

hether youre creating a sales letter, a brochure, a newsletter or any other business promotional piece, you need to write in a way that not only explains your product or service, but also compels your prospects to contact you. Unfortunately, many promotional pieces miss the mark. Outrageous claims, weak calls to action and boring text are the common mistakes that plague most peoples writing. Such errors accomplish only one thing: They destine your promotional piece for the infamous round le. They also show prospects that youre lazy, lack creativity and arent capable of delivering quality work. In order to entice prospects to contact you based on your promotional mailings, you need to keep your writing both lively and factual. The following guidelines will help you write promotional pieces that even your toughest prospects cant resist.

How To The formula is How to + verb + product/service/noun + benet. Example: How to Create a Store Promotion that Increases Revenue New The formula is New + product/service + benet. Example: New Tax Law Saves You Money Power Verb The formula is Power Verb + product/service + benet. Example: Prepare a Business Plan that Boosts Company Prots Free The formula is Free + product/service + benet. Example: Free Booklet Reveals the Secret to Lowering Your Interest Rate Since your headline determines if the prospect keeps reading, craft yours wisely.

You have less than ve seconds to impress your prospects to read on. And the rst thing any prospect reads is the pieces headline.
1. WRITE A HEADLINE THAT GETS TO THE POINT You have less than ve seconds to impress your prospects to read on. And the rst thing any prospect reads is the pieces headline. So craft a compelling headline that immediately conveys why this information is important to your prospects. The four main headline formulas that work are:

2. KEEP THE HYPE TO A MINIMUM Many people think that in order to get people to read their promotional piece they must write something outrageous. To some degree, this is true. Saying something outrageous is a great way to generate interest, as people naturally love controversy. Plus, if you can stir things

but they never tell the prospects to actually do anything. For example, in a sales letter you could write: Please call our ofce immediately for more information on how we can help. A brochure could say: Order the widget at our special introductory price today. In a newsletter you could write: Visit our website for more information about our new product line. Tell prospects precisely what you want them to do. MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU When your promotional pieces present your information in the most compelling and factual manner, your prospects will nd them and your company irresistible. So as you write future sales letters, brochures or other promotional pieces, keep these guidelines in mind. When you do, youll

create a promotional piece that delights prospects and makes them eager to do business with you. GOMC

Drill Pipe Solutions

For drill pipe cleaning, water jet systems beat your usual method

You can get drill pipe back into service sooner and keep it working longer when you clean it with NLB high-pressure water jets. Our water jets (up to 40,000 psi) remove scale and hardened mud more thoroughly than rattle-and-brush systems, making it easier to pass inspections. Water jets also ush out debris and drilling uids without a separate rinse operation. That means fewer plugged drill heads, less corrosion, and more work done between cleanings. For drill pipe that easily passes inspections and goes longer between cleanings, you cant beat water jets. To learn more about NLB cleaning systems, or ask about converting your existing system, call 1-877-NLB-7988 today.

If you werent planning to sell, you would want used equipment that you can rely on not equipment that will cost you more in continuing repairs than it will make for you in new business. The same is true if you are planning to sell only its your buyer who will have to rely on the equipment you buy. You can be sure if the buyers nancial team sees a money pit in your inexpensive second-hand trucks, that will come off the bottom line of your sale at best or leave you without a buyer at worst. Pumps
By Craig Mandli
Dependable nonclogging pumps are a staple on the work site, keeping materials moving and production constant. Here are several pumps designed to meet all job site needs.

SLURRY PUMPS
SUBMERSIBLE SLURRY PUMP KZN heavy-duty submersible slurry pumps from BJM Pumps feature agitators, wear plates and semiopen impellers all constructed of abrasive-resistant 28 percent chrome iron (600 Brinell, 57 Rockwell C). The agitator helps keep solids suspended in liquid and helps prevent the pump from clogging, reducing capital and operating costs. A top discharge and slim design allow for an easy t into tight, thin spaces. It has Class H motor insulation, double silicon carbide mechanical seals and heavy-duty seal. Volutes are cast from hardened ductile iron. Applications include lime slurries, mill scale, coal runoff sumps, ash down sumps, ash transfer, tailings ponds, slag pits, food wastes, silt removal, sand and gravel dewatering and barge and tank clean out. 877/256-7867; www.bjmpumps.com. MINI DREDGE The versatile Mini Dredge from Dragow North America features a heavy-duty dredge pump and can be truck transported with the outriggers folded up. It is stable enough to manage large pumps when deployed, and pumps up to 70 percent solids with rocks and roots, making it ideal for waterway dredging, reservoir capacity maintenance and tailings recovery. Units can be remote controlled. 604/921-7112; www.dragow.us. ROTARY LOBE PUMP The TORNADO T2 rotary lobe pump from NETZSCH Pumps features lobes running inside a metal housing with a replaceable elastomer liner. This design doesnt require O-rings or gaskets, yet delivers robust construction along with simplicity and ease of maintenance. A single, synchronous-toothed timing belt eliminates the maintenance-intensive and costly gearbox. A pulsation-reduction system of channels molded into the rubber walls of the pumping element releases lobe energy and dampens pulsation. The housing design permits full ange-to-ange access when servicing the pump, and offers more room to get into pump internals without having to disassemble piping. 610/363-8010; www.netzschusa.com. HORIZONTAL SLURRY PUMP The Southern Cross SXHS heavy-duty horizontal slurry pump from Pentair is designed for handling abrasive high-density slurries. It is manufactured to be interchangeable with the most common slurry pump designs, and features an extensive range of material and conguration options to suit the most demanding pumping applications. Features include high-strength pump construction with reinforced ribs, a replaceable wear liner, and a cast-iron, single-piece bearing frame with only four through bolts for easy maintenance and adjustment. The impeller features pumpout vanes as standard to prevent recirculation and extend seal life. An external impeller adjustment mechanism is provided below the bearing housing for simple adjustment of impeller clearance. 913/371-5000; www.southerncross.pentair.com.

Problem

PERISTALTIC PUMPS SAVE WATER COSTS AT SILVER MINE

The lack of sufcient water, plus the high cost of pumping water to move slurry at 35 percent solids and 65 percent water at a Mexican silver mine forced the mining operation to look for better alternatives to its centrifugal pumps. They also needed a pump that was less susceptible to intense wear from coarse particles.

In December 2006, operators installed three Flowrox LPP-T 2.5-inch single roller peristaltic pumps on the underow of a rakeless paste thickener. The pumps require only 25 percent of the water previously needed to move the ore, which saves in waste handling and also reduces one or more stages of ltration.

Solution

Result

The pumps are still pumping at 75 percent concentration. The rolling design of the pumps also extends hose life and downtime. One compression per revolution is more efcient and saves on downtime and maintenance. The cost savings in water has been as high as $175,000 per year. 410/636-2250; www.owrox.us.

SLURRY PUMP USED TO DISPOSE OF TAILINGS AT MINE SITE

In 2012, a Nevada gold ore mining and milling facility needed upgrades on a large thickener unit that supported the dewatering of tailings waste. The upgrades required the unit to be taken ofine. The plant operator opted to temporarily bypass the thickener unit and reclaim the clearer liquid at the tailings pond, requiring changes to the process, piping system and overall operation. Because the pumps supplying the tailings thickener feed couldnt be increased in speed due to design limitations, the operator rerouted the piping to a small storage tank, which would serve as a tailings collection reservoir. The reservoir would then feed the pump that delivers the tailings to the pond. Space constraints allowed the installation of only one pump with no room for a spare. If that pump went down, the tailings couldnt be disposed of, resulting in wasted energy consumption and a possible plant shutdown.

Problem

Solution

ITT Goulds Pumps was contacted and the operator was offered a eld trial with the 125XHD extra-heavy-duty lined slurry pump and invoice issuance only if the pump met or exceeded preapproved expectations.

The pump, which was supplied and installed with HC-600 liners and constructed with a half-straddle motor mount, V-belt drive and a 75 hp motor, surpassed 5,000 hours of operation without incident, achieving all targets. Facility maintenance personnel favor it because of its disassembly/reassembly ease and strong performance, and anticipate using it in additional applications. 315/568-2811; www.gouldspumps.com.

PUMPING STATION PROTECTS PUBLIC LAND FROM SPILLS

Engineering water transfers is a key component to fracking, and when Bureau of Land Management-owned land requirements in California are introduced to the project, the difculty can ramp up quickly. When an upstream oil company needed a complicated high-ow water transfer across more than a mile with elevation changes of over 425 feet, they chose Rain for Rent to engineer the water transfer needs.

Problem

A three stage pumping station water transfer system was designed to meet the needed 1,500 gpm for fracking. Water was staged in a mobile frac pond more than a mile from the drilling site. Access was limited to a single-lane unpaved road, and all equipment had to be staged at government-dened areas. All pipe used in the transfer could only be laid along the access road to reach the frac site, and had to permit a free ow of large equipment as the frac pad was staged with equipment. Four DV200 8-inch centrifugal pumps fed water through four 2,000 gpm ltration units and toward the frac site. Two booster stations comprised of two HH225C 8-inch centrifugal high-head pumps each allowed an uninterrupted water transfer to reach the frac site across varying levels of terrain and elevation changes.

Solution

More than a half million gallons were transferred to the frac site, and BLM ofcials were pleased with the environmentally aware water transfer and utilization of Spillguard spill containment barriers under all liquid handling equipment. 800/742-7246; www.rainforrent.com. GOMC

Applications include gas and oil drilling and completion rig sites, access roads, work platforms, swamp access, wet job sites, staging and laydown sites, difcult terrain and remote work camps. The recycled mats also save on disposal costs by keeping job site waste out of landlls. In the energy industry specically, weve found that we can use the high-density polyethylene [HDPE] liners that are put down for containment on drilling sites, says David Crane, executive vice president of building products at AXION. Once the project ends, many of those go into a landll. We can take that material, shred it, clean it and turn it into our structural products. Weve also done some testing on the pipe caps or casing caps used in natural gas drilling. Additionally, once the mats reach the end of their useful life, they can be ground up and used again. The mats consist of solid 7- by 9-inch boards of various lengths that are bolted together using 1- or 1 1/4-inch galvanized carbon steel rods. Standard ve-piece mats are 16, 18 or 20 feet long, 45 inches wide and 7 inches tall. Each board weighs approximately 23 pounds per linear foot. A 16-foot assembled mat weighs 1,794 pounds; an 18-foot mat weighs 2,024 pounds; and a 20-foot mat weighs 2,254 pounds. Seven-piece board congurations can form mats 20 and 24 feet long, 49 inches wide and 9 inches tall. A 20-foot section weighs 3,174 pounds and a 24-foot section weighs 3,818 pounds. AXION also can design and build custom mat sizes upon request.

Our [ve-piece] heavy mats are typically used for equipment that is over 80,000 pounds [up to 110,000 pounds], with either tires or more likely tracks, Crane says. Seven-piece designs can handle heavier equipment. Those ratings assume full support from below, but we have built some small bridges out of these. We can do small stream crossings with our mats alone or sometimes we comingle them with wood and/or mats. It depends on what the contractor may have on site. The 7 by 9 boards also can be used as sides on containment liners or as outrigger pads for heavy equipment. The boards are made from a blend of raw materials and can withstand harsh use and extreme temperatures. AXION also makes 7- by 9-foot cribbing and structural pilings for roof supports in underground mining in addition to custom composite mats used for small bridges and soft wet-area crossings. 740/452-2500; www.axionintl.com.

he timing couldnt be better for country star Lee Brice to arrive in Indianapolis for the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo Industry Appreciation Party. Fresh off his Song of the Year award for I Drive Your Truck at the 2013 Country Music Association Awards in November, Brice is quickly becoming one of the brightest and most sought-after performers around. Winning the CMA award was denitely toward the top, says Brice, when describing where the prestigious honor ranks among his career highlights. It is simply amazing! While this will be Brices rst trip to the Expo, its entirely possible that, had things gone a bit differently a decade ago, he would be a regular attendee. Brice attended Clemson University on a football scholarship and majored in engineering, fully intending to become a civil engineer. In fact, while Brice grew up in a musical family and has always had a passion for performing, he wasnt focused on music right away. It wasnt until a forearm injury forced him to step away from his role as the long snapper on the Clemson football team that he decided to take a serious look at a music career. BECOMING A NASHVILLE HIT-MAKER Brice latched on as a songwriter with Curb Music Publishing, cowriting some 150 songs his rst year. Some of his writing credits include Still for Tim McGraw, Not Every Man Lives for Jason Aldean, Crazy Days and What it Takes for Adam Gregory, More Than A Memory for Garth Brooks, and Crazy Girl, which became one of 2013s biggest hits for the Eli Young Band. Brice holds eight of the 13 writing credits on his newest album, Hard 2 Love, and considers writing a big part of who he is as an artist.

Its awesome! That is one thing that never gets old, says Brice of the feeling he gets hearing another popular artist perform one of his songs on the radio. It is always cool to hear people take what you wrote and give life to it in their own way. DRIVING YOUR TRUCK While Brice writes much of his own music, it was a song he cant take the writing credit for, I Drive Your Truck, that took the big CMA honor. Cowritten by Connie Harrington, Jessi Alexander and Jimmy Yeary, the song could have been recorded by a number of major Nashville acts, but Brice was forwardthinking enough to know a powerful song when he heard it. Or rather, when he felt it. The rst time I heard the song, it absolutely slayed me. It brought me to tears, says Brice. It became personal to me the very rst time that I heard it, and I had a feeling that people were really going to be moved by it. The writers took a broad subject on a specic event and made it accessible for anybody to listen to and connect with through lyrics, and everybody does. The tune was inspired by a National Public Radio report on the sacrice of Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who died in Afghanistan while trying to save a fellow soldier. Jareds father, Paul, keeps the memory of his son alive by regularly driving Jareds Dodge Ram pickup. Brices label threw a party to celebrate the song reaching No. 1 on the country charts last May, and Paul Monti was there to meet Brice and the writers whose work has made his son an inspiration to millions. It was a very moving experience to meet Paul. There is such a personal

68

www.gomcmag.com - FEBRUARY 2014

story attached to the song that you cannot forget Paul, and Jareds service to our country, says Brice. It is such a positive song about being able to connect with that someone youve lost in your life. Already knowing the story, being able to meet the family was just even more powerful and added more inspiration for the song. A FAMILY MAN AT HEART While Brice continues his passion for his music, he is even more passionate for his family wife Sara, and two young sons. A tireless writer and performer, Brice took the entire month of December off to spend with his growing family. My family is everything to me, says Brice. They inspire me to be my best, and Im fortunate enough to get to do what I love and have a supportive wife and family behind me. I want to do well and continue doing well for them. In his downtime, Brice enjoys hunting and watching football. The usual guy stuff, he says. I can also always be found writing, listening to and recording music. Its my passion and I enjoy it even in my spare time. A SHOW WITH ENERGY AND EMOTION When Brice takes the stage Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the JW Marriott Grand Ballroom in Indianapolis, Expo attendees can expect a mix of his upbeat hits such as the catchy Parking Lot Party, Four On The Floor, Hard To Love, and Carolina Boys, along with heartfelt, emotional tunes like Love Like Crazy, Beautiful Every Time, See About A Girl, A Woman Like You, and, of course, I Drive Your Truck. My thing is, I just have a ball doing what I do. I grew up watching a lot of shows. I saw Garth Brooks one time, and I just loved that he could come out and rock you in your face, and then all of a sudden just break down to a guitar and sing to you kind of like a roller coaster dynamic, says Brice. Thats what I like to do what I try to do anyway. GOMC

INSIDE THE INDUSTRY APPRECIATION PARTY

For more than 30 years, COLE Publishing has thrown an Industry Appreciation Party at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo to recognize the hard work and dedication of those in the liquid sanitation industry. This years party, slated to begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the JW Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom, promises to be another high-energy celebration. We recently sat down with COLE Publishing Founder Bob Kendall to discuss the history of the party, and nd out whats in store this year. Q: Why do you throw a party every year? Kendall: The whole idea is to recognize the attendees for the hard work they do throughout the year. Often what they do goes unrecognized. They are the focal point of the industry, and deserve to be celebrated. Q: Youve had some big-name entertainers perform in the past. Who stood out to you? Kendall: Just a few include the Oak Ridge Boys, Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Neal McCoy, Dierks Bentley, Lonestar, Trace Adkins, Rodney Atkins. Craig Morgan did a great job last year. I love Sawyer Brown, and weve had them back several times. Jeff Foxworthy was a lot of fun, too. Q: How do you choose which artist youd like to perform? Kendall: We always look for country talent thats on the rise. Weve had the privilege of working with one of Nashvilles premier booking agents, Autumn Farrell of Prime Source Entertainment Group, for several years, and shes always gotten us great names. Q: Another highlight of the Party is, of course, the 25 cent tap beers. How did that come about? Kendall: Thats all part of the party. Weve always offered choice refreshments to our attendees as a way to recognize and appreciate what they do. Q: This years performer, Lee Brice, fresh off his big CMA Song of the Year win, is one of the most sought-after performers in country music right now. How did you land him? Kendall: Having Lee at the 2014 show is certainly great timing. We actually booked him months before his CMA award, and I have to admit I was pretty excited to see him take home that huge honor in November. That will certainly add to the excitement of the evening. Q: Youve switched the night of the party to Wednesday this year, after holding it on Tuesday evening for several years. Why is that? Kendall: Wednesday is always the most well-attended day of the Expo, and we wanted to accommodate as many Expo attendees as we could. The evening is a terric way for attendees to network with both their peers and exhibitors in a more laid-back setting, preferably over a frosty cold one. Q: Why should attendees plan to attend the Industry Appreciation Party? Kendall: First off, its free with full registration. All they have to do is show their badge at the door. Second, the JW Marriot Grand Ballroom is a great setting. These are performers who are typically used to performing in front of sold-out arenas and stadiums, and our attendees can get right up next to them. Its a very intimate setting. Thats what makes it the must-attend event for our industry.

REWARD SAFE BEHAVIOR

Near miss reporting programs improve safety by identifying weaknesses and the root causes of accidents
By Doug Day

ast months column dealt with how small mistakes can lead to catastrophic events. As the column showed, there will be one death for about every 600 recordable injuries. It also discussed how minor events, even near misses, will eventually lead to something more serious if something isnt done. That is why the National Safety Council encourages companies to develop

to greatly reduce the threat of a midair collision. The air trafc controllers for the two runways were placed next to each other instead of across the room. A work station that blocked their view was moved, new procedures were put in place to make sure aircraft wait after lining up for takeoff, and another controller now monitors the clearances on the two runways to help prevent conicts. A long-term x will

a program for reporting near misses, which it denes as An unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness or damage but had the potential to do so. A worker drops a tool that lands safely on the ground below. Ignoring that single close call could later result in that tool hitting someone. According to an NSC white paper on near miss reporting, History has shown repeatedly that most loss producing events [incidents], both serious and catastrophic, were preceded by warnings or near miss incidents. An FAA investigation into two near misses over Chicagos OHare International Airport in 2011, for instance, found that two runways are close enough that planes landing on one could cross the path of planes taking off on the other. Not only did the investigation create awareness of the situation, the FAA was able to quickly make rather simple changes

improve overall airport safety at OHare by changing runways that create such trafc patterns. That is the goal of any near miss reporting program: identify root causes and weaknesses with the results used to improve safety systems, hazard control, risk reduction and lessons learned. The NSC white paper includes several suggestions that will encourage employee participation: Create a policy and procedure that is communicated to all employees with the backing of senior management. Promote a culture of reporting with the support and help of all managers and supervisors. Educate employees on the reason why near miss reporting is a necessity, the important role that it plays and the process for reporting.

Ensure that the near miss reporting process is easy to understand and use. Continue to communicate the importance of near miss reporting encouraging the participation of all employees. Use the near miss reporting as a leading indicator and report back to the organization on the positive steps taken to improve workplace safety. Reinforce with employees that near miss reporting is nonpunitive. Consider incentives that encourage reporting and enhance the culture. Incentives that have the potential to discourage reporting must be avoided. An example of a good incentive is one that recognizes the participation of workers in the recognition and reporting of hazards. This activity helps to enhance a reporting culture, engage workers in meaningful safety activities and continue a process of risk reduction. An example of a poor incentive is one that recognizes supervisory and management performance based on OSHA recordable rates. This type of incentive has been shown to suppress reporting and can lead to punitive actions that further undermine safety efforts. Include training for new employees as a part of their orientation. Celebrate the success and value of the near miss reporting process with all employees. The National Safety Councils 2013 white paper on near miss reporting is available at www.nsc.org/ Documents/900002534_ADV_OSHA%20 NearMissCase_R13.pdf and includes other sources to help you establish a proactive near miss reporting system.
