LOW FAT & LOW CHOLESTEROL

DIET

Your consultant has placed you on a Low Fat I Low Cholesterol Diet, and your meals have been specially prepared just for you based on this-but what does this mean? This diet is low in fat and in dietary cholesterol and is used to treat hypercholesterolemia, which is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease. The total fat content of the diet is reduced (to 30% or less of energy from fat), and mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and oils are substituted for saturated fats wherever possible. Foods that are high in cholesterol such as offal meats, egg yolks and prawns are also restricted. 2 3

DIABETIC DIET Your consultant has placed you on a Diabetic Diet, and your meals have been specially prepared just for you based on this-but what does this mean? A diabetic diet is an important component in the treatment of diabetes. There are two types of diabetes-insulin dependant (100M) and non-insulin dependant diabetes (NIOOM). The aim of the diabetic diet is to achieve normal metabolism by carefully establishing a balance between diet, exercise and diabetic medications. The diet needs to provide good nutrition; to control energy intake to correct obesity and to maintain ideal weight; to control blood sugar levels to avoid both hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia; to provide adequate energy for growth and activity in the young diabetic and to prevent diabetic complications. In most cases the diet should remain constant, while the dosage of hypoqlycaernlc medications are adjusted. Carbohydrate foods are spread evenly throughout the day or may be varied according to the type of insulin used and the activity level of the patientespecially in 100M. Fat levels are set at approximately 35%* and protein provides about 15% of the total energy. Foods with a low energy value may be included freely in the diet. 2

The New Diabetic Diet based on Low Glycaemic Index Foods There has been a big change in dietary treatment of diabetes in the last few years due to recent research on the absorption of carbohydrates. The spee~ of conversion and absorption of carbohydrates into blood sugar is called its glycaemic index. Research on the absorption of carbohydrate foods Since the early 1980's there has been a lot of research into carbohydrates. It has disproved the widespread belief that "complex carbohydrates" or starches are absorbed into the blood stream slowly, whereas simple sugars are absorbed rapidly. The old diabetic diet was based on this incorrect belief and a sugar free diet was prescribed. Sugars .' A wider variety of foods can now be included in a healthy eating plan for diabetes. Sugars like fructose (the sugar in fruit), lactose (the sugar iri milk) and
