TOWNSHIPOFDENVILLE **SNOWGUIDELINES**

The 20132014 winter has already brought more than two (2) times the average amount of annual snowfalltoourcommunity,withstillmorethanamonthremaininginthesnowseason. Maintaining our local streets safe for motorist and pedestrians is a top priority that has been challenging this winter due to both the quantity of snow and the persistent subfreezing temperatures. These conditionshaveresultedinmuchofthesnowonthesideoftheroadwaystohaveturnedintoicemaking it virtually impossible for our plow trucks to push it further back beyond the curbline. Further complicating our snow clearing efforts is a regional road salt shortage impacting most of the northeast. Denville Township is one of the few municipalities within Morris County to still have road salt remaining; however,ourroadsaltsuppliesaretooalmostexhausted. Therefore, motorists are strongly encouraged to exercise great caution while driving during and after stormeventsasroadwaysarenarrowedduetothequantityofsnow.Furthermore,duetoourinabilityto spread road salt at normal levels due to the aforementioned salt shortage, there may be heightened likelihoodoficyconditions. The following are a couple of basic tips as well as some local ordinance regulations we are requesting residentsandbusinessownersfollowtoensureheightenedpublicsafetythiswinter. What you can do to help Duringstormevents,keepofftheroadwaysforallbutthemostessentialtrips. AdoptaHydrant Shovel a two (2) foot clear area around the fire hydrant near your home or business. Helpyourneighborswhoareunabletoshoveltheirownsidewalks/walkways. Clearthesnowfromstormbasininletsnearyourhome. During trash/recycling collection days that occur during snow events, please ensure receptacles areplacedbehindthecurblineandnotinthestreetitself.

Local Ordinance Itisprohibitedtopushthesnowfromyourpropertyintoapublicroadway.Whenclearingsnow,it mustbeconfinedtoyourpropertybehindthecurbline. o Snow pushed into the street further narrows the roadway, creates hazardous driving conditionsandbecomesdifficultforourplowoperatorstomanage. Clearsnowfromthesidewalkinfrontofyourpropertywithin24hoursoftheendofthesnowfall. AvoidproblemsinformyourcontractoroftheaboveTownshipregulations.

How the Township Plows Every storm is different and the decisions made by our very experienced DPW leadership on how tomosteffectivelyclearourroadsisbaseduponthebestforecastinformationwehaveavailable. During a snow storm the town is divided into more than 30 routes, covering every Township ownedstreetwithinthemunicipality.Anindividualplowdriverisassignedtoeachroutetoensure everystreetinthecommunityreceivesequalattention. The main roadways/arteries within each route receive priority attention, followed by the clearing ofemergencyfacilities(Hospital,FirstAid/FireStations,etc.)&thensecondaryresidentialstreets. As routes are completed, the plow trucks return to the first street and plow again, continuing throughthestorm.
