07-ELEC-A1 CIRCUITS Q.1 (20 %)

The impedance Z0 in the circuit of figure 1 is variable and represents the load. You are asked to do the following: (13%) i) Calculate the numerical value of Z0 the guarantees maximum power transfer from the circuit to the load. (2%) ii) When Z0 takes on its optimal value, what is the percentage of the power developed in the circuit that is transferred to the load? (3%) iii) Assuming that Z0 is replaced by a pure resistance R 0 , what will be its optimal value R 0 ? (2%) iv) For the value of R 0 calculated in iii), calculate the value of the ratio (Power delivered/power developed).

Initially, the switch in the circuit of figure 2 is in position a and the circuit is at a steady state. At t = 0 , it moves to position b. (4%) i) Calculate the energy stored in the circuit at t = 0 .

(12%) ii) Find an explicit expression for the output voltage v 0 ( t ) for t > 0 . (2%) (2%) iii) Calculate the time required by the circuit to reach a new steady state. iv) Give an expression for vo ( t ) when it reaches a sinusoidal steady state.

Figure 4 L1, L2 and L3 in figure 4 are the three electric loads connected in parallel. A description of these loads is: L1: absorbs 20 kVA at a lagging power factor of 0.85. L2: absorbs 15 kW and develops 10 kVAR. L3: consists of a resistance of 12.5 in parallel with an inductive reactance x of unkown value. The global power factor (the 3 loads together) is 0.8 lagging. Calculate : (10%) i) (5%) (5%) The numerical value of the inductive reactance x en .

ii) For the total load (L1, L2 and L3 together) give the numerical value of the apparent power, the active power and the reactive power. iii) The electric losses in the transmission line.
