Detailed Tables of Projected TEU and Resulting Number of Port

Bayonne Bridge

Scenario Analysis:
Estimate of Weekly Service in
Newark Bay by Vessel Size

Appendix E:
Climate Change and
Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The following procedure was used to estimate the number of ships operating in any given size category,
in any year, for both the Raise the Roadway alternative and the No Build alternative. This is physical
vessels, not port calls (each vessel may call multiple times per year).

Total projected vessel calls for a given

year by TEU size
VCi

Determine if adjustment
needed. Assumes weekly
service of similar size vessel,
50 port calls per year:

VCi divides evenly

by 50?

Adjust data by shifting remainder to larger

vessel size category.*

yes

At slow steaming, it is
assumed that 8 vessels
would be required to
maintain weekly service on
average.

no

Calculate number of individual vessels by size

category (Vi)
Vi = VCi *8 / 50

Number of vessels (Vi) used to calculate

fuel annual consumption.

* After data was prepared for all years, if anomalies resulted whereby the number of weekly services at a given
size category would change for a single year and then change back the next year, weekly service was
manually adjusted to larger or smaller category as appropriate while maintaining capacity.
