LAYOFFS
Beaumont Hospitals
More layoffs are expected at Beaumont Hospitals, as the three-hospital system looks
to trim staff in areas where patient business has declined and isn't likely to rebound.
The layoffs will be targeted to departments that have been most affected by the
economic downturn and are losing patient volumes, such as some obstetrics or
cardiology departments, said Colette Stimmell, Beaumont's director of public
relations. "We're looking at areas where volume has diminished and isn't likely to
return," she said. She expects workers to be informed of the job cuts in the next
several weeks.
The Detroit News
Central Georgia Health System
The Central Georgia Health System approved its 2010 budget that includes a 5
percent increase in overall patient charges but still anticipates a $9 million drop in
operating revenue compared to 2009. About 95 percent of the health system’s
budget is for The Medical Center of Central Georgia. The rest includes a rehabilitation
hospital, an assisted living community, the hospital’s foundation and a company that
employs doctors and faculty who work at the Medical Center. Don Faulk, CEO of the
hospital and health system, told the board the hospital was able to reduce its costs
by $31 million in fiscal 2009, as it had anticipated. He said he expects the hospital to
realize the full $43 million identified in annual savings within the fiscal 2010 budget
year. Faulk said the budget assumes some program and budget cuts will make up
some of those losses, but the details haven’t been worked out. “But changes are
going to be incremental,” Faulk said. “We’re not going to close the door on that.” He
said the particulars of the anticipated cuts probably will be worked out in October.

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula

Tough economic times have the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula
looking to cut down staff, which means some medical workers may be asked to leave
their jobs. The hospital has shut down the Garden West Wing, one of its seven
nursing stations for general patients, in order to save an estimated $750,000 a year.
CHOMP said the closure of the unit is a result of the recession. Fewer patients are
opting for elective surgery and refusing medical procedures if they're not needed
immediately. The move is the first in a series to help eliminate $36 million from the
hospital's annual budget, which means the hospital may ask for voluntary layoffs
within the next few months.

Cook County Health and Hospital System

Layoffs at the Cook County Health and Hospital System are going to happen,
according to a budget presented to the board that slashes the system’s county tax
subsidies by nearly 20 percent. More than 1,800 jobs will be eliminated by next
spring. Health system spokesman Lucio Guerrero confirmed yesterday that about
500 more jobs will be eliminated, in addition to the 900 that are already being
eliminated. He said no determination has been made regarding which positions will
be cut, nor will officials know until a consultant releases a report in October. The cuts
will include both vacant and filled positions.

MetroSouth Medical Center

MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island confirmed that it plans to lay off 120
employees, citing the recession and its impact on hospital admissions. "It's a direct
result of a decrease in our inpatient activity, which is similar to that of other area
hospitals," said Arnold Kimmel, MetroSouth's Chief Executive. "Likewise, the layoff is
similar to what other service organizations are going through particularly in this very
difficult economy." A group led by Transition Health Care Co. last year bought
MetroSouth Medical Center, formerly St. Francis Hospital & Health Center, from SSM
Health Care, a St. Louis-based nonprofit and one of the nation's largest Catholic-
owned systems. Like other hospitals across the country, the facility has been hit by a
growing number of patients unable to pay their medical bills and had racked up tens
of millions of dollars in losses under SSM ownership. SSM no longer wanted to
commit to additional capital investments, fearing the hospital would be a drag on its
other operations, executives said at the time.

TRENDS
SPOTLIGHT: Big employment mistakes hospitals make
By Anne Zieger

Lately, there have been more than a few high-profile cases in which juries have
awarded millions to employees suing former employers, often under provisions of the
1991 Civil Rights Act. To avoid being the next target, a pair of attorneys have
identified the top 20 mistakes employers commonly make when hiring, including
inconsistent recruiting and hiring, inappropriate interview questions, failure to
properly pay non-exempt employees for breaks, lunch and overtime and failure to
follow personnel policies.
