Indoor Events Arena/Hall

1. Introduction An arena is an enclosed space especially designed to showcase sporting and entertainment events. It consists of a fairly large event space generally at lowest point surrounded on most or all sides by tiered seating for spectators. They are designed for multiple sports and events primarily because substantial saving can be achieved in terms of services, capital, land and operational cost among other making the costly structure more feasible and sustainable. Arena is a large scale modern building. Modern because large span roof which covers the arena are result of modern technologies. Need of column free large spans makes arena structurally challenging building. No doubt the covering roof is what differentiates arena from a stadium. The main advantage of it obviously is activities will be unaffected by external weather factor, so that whatever the weather condition outside, the spectator as well as player and performer can carry on with the event. Its large size means that, if designed properly they can serve as landmarks for area and city.

2. Background Sporting and Entertainment events have been part of human life style from the dawn of civilization. Open performance stadiums and amphitheatres existed from ancient Greek and Roman time which was built to provide unobstructed view of sports and entertainment activities to large no of spectators. With modernization and globalization process, many mew sports and events have now become part of urban Nepalese society. Newer sports like Basket ball, Badminton, Hand ball etc and events like concerts, exhibitions and shows are becoming popular day by day. With increasing popularity of such sports, need for appropriate venues for hosting events and competition of such sports has become evident. Some of the popular examples of arena are Madison Square garden, London Arena, Houston super dome. In Nepalese context, indoor hall at Lainchour and covered hall of Dasrath Stadium are two examples of similar type of Buildings.

3. Project Description The proposed arena intends to provide quality indoor performance space good enough to fulfill the recreational needs of local population while being competent enough to host international level competition. Sporting events will no doubt be the main target of the arena. Being a large scale project and for sustainability (in Nepalese context) the designed indoor space will not only serve sporting activities but other events also. The main component of the project will hence be a single large scale indoor venue capable of hosting international level sporting and entertainment events. The main focus of the design will be on the indoor hall.

The project is not intended to be a sports center as it is not intended to promote or provide training facilities for a particular sports but it is intended and will be capable of showcasing or hosting sporting events and competitions as it happens. While designing the arena it is not just the player or performers who should be considered for design but the spectators should also be duly considered as their comfort, safety and pleasure is major factor for making the project successful. The proposed arena will be capable of hosting the following events Sporting events Indoor football, Hand Ball These sports will serve as base to determine the size of event space. The required spaces for these sports being 22m x 42m Other major Sporting events Basket Ball, Badminton, Volley Ball Martial Arts, Boxing, T.T Other Events Concerts and Musical events Exhibition, shows and social Gatherings If possible, disaster management issues like temporary shelter in case of natural disaster will also be addressed. The project hence aims at providing necessary facilities and proper arrangement not only for events, players but also for viewers as well. The major focus of the study will also be on technological side of the building. Such large span building are new to Nepalese context and proper study will be needed on how to built such building especially in Nepalese context. The project hence aims to combine technology with architecture to built a international standard national level arena feasible to Nepal's context.

4. Justification Need of Event Arena With globalization sporting and entertainment events has become popular with the people. Watching live sporting and entertainment events has become part of modern day life style. Organizing such events has become one of the successful business today. Hence, construction of event arena capable of hosting such events will no doubt be feasible. There is clear lack of indoor halls of host large scale events in case of Nepal. Lacks of international level events space were evident during 8 th SAF games held in Kathmandu. The organizing committee has to use indoor hall of Sehenshah Hotel for Martial art events and city hall for weight lifting both of which were inadequate to host events of such significance. The indoor hall of Lainchour is not up to national standards either. The indoor hall of Dasarath stadium is adequate but with capacity of 1000 people not sufficient for big events and international level competitions. The city hall and BICC are suitable for formal indoor events but for informal events like concerts, musical events, exhibition they are not suitable.

The proposed indoor arena is intended to solve this shortcoming by providing quality hall for hosting such international level large scale indoor events. As the proposed hall is intended for multiple type of events substantial saving can be achieved in terms of services, capital, land and operational cost making the costly structure more feasible and sustainable.

5. Requirement Basic Requirement Main event space of area 22mX44m minimum Seating capacity: Min 4500 people permanent seating General Requirement For spectators: Ticket booths, W/Cs, Food Stalls For players and performers Players room, w/ bath and toilets, Gymnasium cum practice hall, Canteen For Administration purpose Offices for staffs, Meeting rooms and VIP rooms For Media Conference hall, Media Room, Broadcast Cabin etc Store and Service Room Medical Facilities Restaurants The building requires good co-ordination, organization and arrangement of above mentioned spaces Detail requirement and space area will be detailed out after concluding and analyzing the case studies and literature review.

6. Site Analysis Ideal site condition for the project Proximity and easy access to major highways however busy central core areas are not feasible Favorable soil condition and terrain to withstand building of such scale Ample water supply and availability of all major utilities to carter gathering of large no of people. 7. Study Methodology The knowledge over the topic can only be achieved by in depth study of the topic. For this following methods shall be implemented A. Primary Data Collection Under primary data collection, study of already existing similar building will be performed. These includes the following: Covered hall at Dasrath Stadium Indoor TT hall at Lainchour

GAA Hall at Thamel B. Secondary Data Collection Under Secondary data collection literature review over the topic though books, internet and interview with related person is done which will help to understand design requirement and conceptualizing the project. Major Design aspects/challenges Building Scale The scale of the building in terms of built up area will be very large compared to other building and structures which is a challenge in Nepalese context where there is lack of technology. Large Span roofs This is the major component of a arena. The hall requires column free large span roofs which requires modern construction technology for building. Lighting Although it is indoor venue to make the building more energy efficient use of day light should be a priority. To achieve this, research on appropriate design methods and material technology is required. Main event space The main event space is intended for various sporting and entertainment events, that is one space is intended various supported activities and events. As requirement of different sports and events are different a proper design solution need to be found out to carter all the activities. Scope of study The study shall involve the design aspects of the arena and also address technological aspects and material study to be included in design. 8. Conclusion As already mentioned lack of international level indoor hall for large events is a major issue in Nepalese context. The proposed arena will try to solve this problem by providing a quality indoor hall for hosting such events
