Ifthesewerephotographs,theywouldbehiddenawayonthetop shelfatsomeseedycornerstore.Instead,theyarepaintingsand theyareondisplayatLondon'sesteemedBritishMuseum.Visitors under16yearsoldmustbeaccompaniedbyanadult.What'scertain isthatthisongoingexhibitionShunga:SexandPleasureinJapanese Artraisesimportantquestionsaboutthejuncturebetweenartand freespeech,someofwhichareuniquetoourdigitalage. "Shunga",whichtranslatesto"springpictures,"wasapopular Japanesepaintingstyleforhundredsofyears.Inthewordsofthe exhibitioncuratorTimothyClark,Shunga"celebratesthepleasuresof lovemaking,inbeautifulpicturesthatpresentmutualattractionand sexualdesireasnaturalandunaffected."Often,Shungapaintingsare humorous;sometimes,theyaresubversivegentlypokingfunatthe culturalandaestheticmoresoftheirtime.
