In response to this article: http://www.policymic.com/articles/79455/7-moments-thatmade-frozen-the-most-progressive-disney-movie-ever Y p! I loved most of these things a"o t it.

#nd I also have many related tho ghts. I co ld easily tell! even from the most recent trailers! that $lsa had early on "een designed as a villain. %hat was one way in which the film played against convention and a dience e&pectations. 'ome fans felt pset that the more-s ffering elder sister ended p with only one type of love (familial)! while the yo nger one had two (familial and romantic.) *n the one hand I can see romance for $lsa as "eing a good s "+ect for a se, el to deal with! possi"ly...and yet! I also thin- it.s great to have another /isney princess/, een witho t a man. 0ot even a princess anymore--a , een regnant. 1eaning! she r les in her own right--she.s not the wife of a -ing. 'he.s simply the r ler. It was awesome that apparently no one in #rendelle too- iss e with the notion of "eing r led "y a yo ng woman--even a very ine&perienced one who.d spent the ma+ority of her life th s far loc-ed p in the castle. 2esides! she.s got her whole life and all the time in the world to get married! if she.s going to. 0o need to r sh into that. 'he also still has her rad powers! and personally! I.ll ta-e those over a "oyfriend. #nna is a"le to "e "ea tif l #0/ impet o s! rash! assertive! imperfect! a "it messy and spastic! etc. 'pea-ing of going against e&pectations...3ans (4oo"er) threw everyone in my theater for a loop. I co ld tell "y the partic lar h shed silence when he declined to -iss #nna. I gasped! and didn.t move my hand off my face for a good min te. I did not see that one coming. 1y prediction had "een that 5ristoff wo ld fall in love , ic-ly with $lsa! then eat his words to #nna. 1y mom.s was that they were going to wind p 6switching "oyfriends!6 with 5ristoff 7 #nna falling in love (as it "ecame increasingly clear that they were! thro gho t their +o rney)! and 3ans marrying $lsa instead. #nd as for 6love at first sight6...well! that happens in plenty of non-/isney stories as well. 0ot all /isney movies involve someone falling in love very , ic-ly! and sometimes it seems "elieva"le that yo can spend very little time in someone.s presence and yet feel that yo .ve tr ly met 6the one.6 2 t this movie did a great +o" of demonstrating why yo really '3*89/ e&ercise ca tion and get to -now whom yo .re "ecoming involved with: *therwise yo .re ta-ing a pretty "ig ris-. $lsa.s "it of wisdom and 5ristoff.s incred lo sness at #nna were refreshing! too. *f co rse! #nna 7 5ristoff got to -now one another gen inely over a matter of days! so it didn.t ta-e long for tr e love to "lossom in their case either--" t they were a rather epic few days. %he filmma-ers pro"a"ly wanted to co nteract the message that.s commonly "een ta-en from /isney princess films since the original one--not only that females sho ld "e passive and wait for the heroic actions of men to save them! " t that s dden strong feelings for a recent ac, aintance (or viewed person) a tomatically constit tes 6tr e love6 and demands that one swear the rest of his/her life to that person. *f co rse yo ;#0 fall in love , ic-ly! " t they don.t want to impress pon children that 6love at first sight6 always wor-s o t. #nna.s and 3ans. d et was o"vio sly intended to represent them 6getting to -now one another6 over the co rse of at least a co ple ho rs...m ch li-e ;inderella and <rince ;harming. %his time! that didn.t wor- o t "eca se one person of the pair wasn.t "eing his gen ine self. *n the other hand! d ring the also relatively short time that #nna gets to -now 5ristoff! "oth are "eing their tr e selves from the start--and going thro gh things that the 3arry <otter trio wo ld ndo "tedly agree tend to ma-e

people into friends! at least: # lot of the article is worded too strongly! tho gh. %here were several o tspo-en princesses "efore 1erida! starting with #riel. %he trope of the delicate! soft-spo-en! s "missive! fragile lady has "een played with and s "verted to some degree plenty of times. (0ot to ta-e away from =rozen.s clearly feminist standpoint! which is still pro"a"ly the most advanced and complete we.ve yet seen...nor to imply that there is anything "ad a"o t people who are s "missive! soft-spo-en! sensitive! timid! gentle and all that. It.s simply that we need to cele"rate all different types of <$*<9$--not say that 6this is how all women sho ld "e! that is how all men sho ld "e. If one acts li-e the other se& according to o r traditional views! there is something wrong with them.6) = rthermore! =rozen comes from a feminist perspective witho t "eing 6o"vio s6 or preachy at all-ma-ing it perfect for everyone! incl ding those who disli-e having heavy-handed social messages hammered over their heads. %his is! after all! as it sho ld "e--we sho ldn.t 0$$/ movies to go o t of their way to tell s that women aren.t wea- se& o"+ects. >e sho ld all + st operate from the nat ral perspective that people are people! and none o ght to "e treated differently "ased pon se& or anything else. %heir parents were clearly good! caring! loving people who simply did not -now how to handle a child "lessed/c rsed with cryo-inetic powers which they "elieved were dangero s! ncontrolla"le! and needed to "e s ppressed for everyone.s good. %hey tho ght they were doing what wo ld ltimately "e "est for their da ghter! " t from o r enlightened perspective! it was pretty messed p and harmf l. Isolation! fear! shame! s ppression! and misery were forced pon her. 3er powers were li-e ?ac--?ac- <arr.s! or @iolet.s! or any of the ' pers. from %he Incredi"les. %hey grew stronger as she grew! and wanted e&pressionA the more she str ggled to inhi"it them! the more insistent they "ecame. It.s clear that her moods/emotions infl ence the e&pression of her power. If she.s 6mad or scared or stressed6 (to , ote 6=i&er-8pper6)! or fr strated! etc.! yo see the f rio s side! and it can get , ite o t of control. If she.s misera"le and despairing! yo see a sort of sheet of misty ice cover everything! and snow hangs almost s spended sadly in the air! falling ever so slowly. <ositivity and confidence give her control! and the a"ility to create "ea ty and gladness. %he movie.s overall messages really #B$ progressive and wonderf l! applica"le to everyone. #ll of the characters have to deal with isolation! really..." t I too li-ed the message that freedom and honest self-e&pression are too important to sacrifice! even if it means yo wind p "y yo rself. *"vio sly $lsa was not meant to remain solitary for the rest of her life! " t that time spent alone! freely e&ploring and honing her a"ilities! trying to find her own tr e identity! re+ecting the forced repression of her former life--that was a significant part of her development and mat ration into the capa"le! ready-to-r le , een we see in the end. 'he doesn.t all of a s dden "ecome perfectly flawless! " t she ta-es all of her e&periences and e&tracts from them the strength to transform into a new person...and along with her! everyone else in #rendelle is plifted as well. In some ways! $lsa is compara"le to 'im"a--convinced that she m st t rn her "ac- on her -ingdom for good and never ret rn! em"racing a r le-free and self-centered life! "efore event ally realizing that she has a d ty to go home and rise a"ove the nfort nate events of the past to "ecome a great r ler. %he one thing I did 0*% pic- p on at all! was the .*a-en.s gay familyC. thing. 9oo-ing at

the screenshot! it does appear to "e another man and several -ids in the sa na. 2 t my ass mption remains the same as when I.d seen it only once! , ic-ly--that he has a n m"er of relatives hanging aro nd there! and possi"ly doesn.t even -now all of their names. %hat co ld easily "e his "rother (my ass mption)! or co sin! with nieces/nephews or his own children! or something. It.s not that yo ;*89/0.% interpret it as a partner and their children! " t it + st seems nli-ely to me that that wo ld "e the case--and I don.t perceive any 6clear implication6 that it.s s pposed to "e a h s"and. /on.t get me wrong! I.d love to see a gay co ple depicted (positively) in a /isney film...I + st thin- that.s interpreta"le in other ways that seem more li-ely to me. I don.t thin- it co nts witho t an act al clear implicationA this really so nds li-e wishf l thin-ing. #nd indeed! it was the two sisters who resolved things in the endA %3$IB 6tr e love6 for one another t rned o t to "e the -ey. %heir relationship! 6frozen6 since early childhood! was thawed at last! and a"le to contin e from where they.d left off. %his is the first time we.ve seen someone.s 6act of tr e love6 save his/her own life. #nd then $lsa realizes how she can restore the -ingdom to "alance and health.
