CAS Messages Clean-up during aircraft power-up

Equipments and systems have different initialization times during the aircraft power up. Due to this, some EICAS messages can be displayed but goes automatically off after the proper initialization of these systems. In order to avoid that transitory messages are displayed during the power up, a 120-second-delay was implemented to the logic of some EICAS messages. Prior to this logic modification, a list of 17 messages were inhibited during power up in several Epic Load versions. Then, 94 messages were added to the previous list and are also inhibited during power up in the Epic Load Versions 25.3, 25.4 and higher versions. The messages related to each Epic Load Version are listed in the Service Newsletters - SNL 190-00-0071 and 170-00-0074 - CAS Messages Cleanup during the Aircraft Power-Up. The ACFOG Airplane Changes Flight Operations Guide references were also revised to include the related information in the Sections 1-23 and 1-24.

Flight Control No Dispatch Best Practices Service News Letter (SNL)

Embraer developed the SNL170-270061 and SNL190-27-0057 that bring a compilation of the best practices with the purpose of helping the operators to troubleshoot the Flight Controls No Dispatch (FCND) failures. These practices have been identified during FCND Tiger Team meetings and were complemented with good maintenance practices shared by operators over the time. The document is divided in sections that consist of, among others, troubleshooting tips, reset guidelines, health monitoring basics and a list of FIM tasks that were revised due to Tiger Team workshop. These practices have proved to be helpful for operators to identify and reduce repeaters aircraft, speed up troubleshooting, build a confident database with FCND failures that helps troubleshooters on similar situations with the purpose of dropping FCND failure rate (delays and cancellations). Furthermore, the FCND Tiger Team has studied the performance of several operators with low and high FCND rates and has determined a correlation between reset and FCND failure rate.

No More Auto Brake Spurious Warnings on Load 25.1

The autobrake system provides automatic braking at maximum deceleration rates. It controls hydraulic pressure to the brakes and provides a constant deceleration rate. Four autobrake levels (LO, MED, HI and RTO) are available via a selector knob on the cockpit main instrument panel. The aural message AUTOBRAKE is enabled when the selected level is disarmed by the autobrake module (ABM) or brake control module (BCM) failure during parking, taxiing, takeoff roll or landing. Every autobrake system failure is displayed on the EICAS through the AUTOBRAKE FAIL message. However, Embraer customers have reported spurious auto brake aural warning during take-off, which increases the pilot workload. After investigating this issue, ABM PN 142071171 was introduced in 2008 as an interim action to address 70% of the events. The final solution was released in 2011 through Honeywell load version 25.1. Two years after the implementation, the effectiveness analysis showed no pilot reports of spurious auto brake aural warning during take-off and the solution was considered effective.

Reminder
As informed in the Technical Workshop during the EOC Rio 2013, corrupted DPRAM data in one FADEC channel could initiate fuel shutoff request, causing engine shutdown. FADEC V5.42 software brings a modified DPRAM data corruption fault logic and thrust control malfunction (TCM) shutdown logic, so that cross channel shall no longer command fuel shutoff in the standby channel. GE and Embraer Service Bulletins were already released and are available for implementation:

Did you know?

There are some cases where a good picture worths more than a thousand words and more than the need to understand hard technical drawings. This Service Newsletter which is an Embraer formal document, was first presented as a draft to some operators and those rapidly requested Embraer to make it official by means of a SNL. The new SNL 190-36-0022 aims to provide some important tips to support the maintenance personnel during the incorporation of Embraer SB 190-36-0019 PYLON - OVERHEAT DETECTOR SENSORS (ODS) INSTALLATION IMPROVEMENT. The aforementioned mentioned document is available at FlyEmbraer since the beginning of Dec/2013.

MRB process achievements in 2013

In this edition the Focus On has the main goal to divide with the readers the excellent results reached during the E-Jets MRB process over 2013. Trough established partnership with Airlines to send and/or authorization of information acquisition arising from the scheduled maintenance inspections, participation and validation of technical proposal during Working Groups, it was possible the progress of E-Jets Escalation Project and publishing of Temporary Revision aiming to make easy the scheduled maintenance and consequently, reducing cost.

Technical Proposal for E-Jets MRB Optimization

Altogether were presented more than 500 technical proposals addressing the interval optimization of the Basic 1 maintenance package from 6,000 FH to 7,500 FH and Basic 2 from 12,000 FH to 15,000 FH where it was considered system section, structural and zonal tasks. Other tasks were addressed and through the data collected from field with the reliability analysis was possible to get an approval with ANAC (Primary Authority) and authorities (FAA/EAS/TCCA) temporary revision to rise complex tasks intervals as Horizontal Stabilizer Backlash, inspection of control cables in fuselage area and other tasks that presented high accomplishment cost. Another important point to be considered to 2013 was the presentation of more than 10,000 pages of technical subsidies related to statistical and reliability analysis

to determine the new interval 25% higher than the actual one or the definition of optimal interval based on field data analysis (scheduled and non scheduled maintenance). In summary, we had over this year, meeting of optimizing structures / zonal, two general optimization meetings, where it was discussed proposals for systems, structures, zonal and ISC (Industry Steering Committee) in early November where all technical proposals that were approved by the Working Groups had a second approval and will be submitted for final approval by the authorities in the event called MRB meeting, which will take place in the week of 20th to 24th January 2014 and will involve the authorities and operators representatives(ISC and WG Co-chairman). Other two technical events and ISC realized during 2012 (Structural / Zonal Working Groups and General Working Group) had technical proposals approved and will be submitted to MRB meeting in January 2014.

As additional results we had had approvals by the technical Working Group and ISC of rising interval to some tasks from the INT package that stayed out of phase after the first part of the optimization project of this package during 2010 and 2011.

Achieved Results during 2013

The following results were achieved during the Working Groups and approved in the ISC meeting performed in 2012 and 7th and 8th of November 2013 and will be submitted to authorities approval.

As shown in the graphics below, the next MRB 170/175 revision (rev 9) and MRB 190/195 (rev 7) will bring partial results on E-Jets escalation projects Basic 1 as to Basic 2 foreseen to April 2014.

It is important to highlight the result obtained with the evolution of structural program and CPCP in 2013 where harmonization between 170 and 190 programs and the definition of optimal intervals were discussed and agreed in the Working Groups ensuring continued airworthiness

with low maintenance costs. It is hoped, through the new structural program which will be partially available in April 2014, that E-Jets operators realize how much the plan is improved. However, completion of BASIC 1 project and also the review of structures will occur until mid-2014.

Next Steps in 2014

The next year, will be no different of 2013 and will have great challenges both from the point of view of continuity of field data collection as the participation of business areas for the validation and approval of technical proposals to complete the escalation of BASIC 1 in June 2014, and BASIC 2 in December 2014. It is planned for the middle of next year to issue a temporary revision addressing technical proposals approved during the Working Groups and ISC in the first half of 2014 and another full review of MRB 170/175 (rev 10) and MRB 190/195 (rev 8) contemplating the escalation intervals BASIC 2 in January 2014. We would like to thank all operators and authorities that have participated in this milestone providing the E-Jets with optimized intervals and seize the opportunity to wish you all happy holidays and a great new year full of happiness and achievements.

SNAPSHOT OF THE MONTH

Last November, British Airways decorated one of their E-190s with a giant moustache. This is a joint action with London City Airport to support the charity campaign called Movember. Movember (a merged word of mustache and november) is an annual, month-long event that encourages men to grow their moustaches as a way of raising the awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer and associated charities. Passengers could take photographs of the giant moustache in exchange of a donation. Passengers were also invited to share photos and their own Movember efforts online, with prizes available to thank them for their donation. The results are great. In 2012, British Airways raised 80,000 worldwide for the Movember campaign. Source: BA Cityflyer
