Hysteresis

Whenaferromagneticmaterialismagnetizedinonedirection,itwillnotrelax backtozeromagnetizationwhentheimposedmagnetizingfieldisremoved.It mustbedrivenbacktozerobyafieldintheoppositedirection.Ifan alternatingmagneticfieldisappliedtothematerial,itsmagnetizationwilltrace outaloopcalledahysteresisloop.Thelackofretraceabilityofthe magnetizationcurveisthepropertycalledhysteresisanditisrelatedtothe existenceofmagneticdomainsinthematerial.Oncethemagneticdomainsare reoriented,ittakessomeenergytoturnthembackagain.Thispropertyof ferrromagneticmaterialsisusefulasamagnetic"memory".Some compositionsofferromagneticmaterialswillretainanimposedmagnetization indefinitelyandareusefulas"permanentmagnets".Themagneticmemory aspectsofironandchromiumoxidesmakethemusefulinaudiotaperecording andforthemagneticstorageofdataoncomputerdisks. Becauseofhysteresis,aninputsignalatthelevelindicatedbythedashedline couldgiveamagnetizationanywherebetweenCandD,dependinguponthe immediateprevioushistoryofthetape(i.e.,thesignalwhichprecededit).This clearlyunacceptablesituationisremediedbythebiassignalwhichcyclesthe oxidegrainsaroundtheirhysteresisloopssoquicklythatthemagnetization averagestozerowhennosignalisapplied.Theresultofthebiassignalislikea magneticeddywhichsettlesdowntozeroifthereisnosignalsuperimposed uponit.Ifthereisasignal,itoffsetsthebiassignalsothatitleavesaremnant magnetizationproportionaltothesignaloffset.
