Hysteresis

Whenaferromagneticmaterialismagnetizedinonedirection,itwillnotrelax backtozeromagnetizationwhentheimposedmagnetizingfieldisremoved.It mustbedrivenbacktozerobyafieldintheoppositedirection.Ifan alternatingmagneticfieldisappliedtothematerial,itsmagnetizationwilltrace outaloopcalledahysteresisloop.Thelackofretraceabilityofthe magnetizationcurveisthepropertycalledhysteresisanditisrelatedtothe existenceofmagneticdomainsinthematerial.Oncethemagneticdomainsare reoriented,ittakessomeenergytoturnthembackagain.Thispropertyof ferrromagneticmaterialsisusefulasamagnetic"memory".Some compositionsofferromagneticmaterialswillretainanimposedmagnetization indefinitelyandareusefulas"permanentmagnets".Themagneticmemory aspectsofironandchromiumoxidesmakethemusefulinaudiotaperecording andforthemagneticstorageofdataoncomputerdisks.
