Nash 1 Andrea Nash Julie Perino ENGL 102 February 15, 2014 Academic Essays: My Journey to Professionalism As a student,

I am required to write academic essays in order to maintain an impressive GPA, express my voice, and show my knowledge of the English language. In order to do so, I must be able to edit my papers for any misspellings or grammatical errors, form unique thoughts and clearly express those thoughts on paper, all while avoiding any form of plagiarism by citing my sources. Each of my professors expects me to know how to do each of these and if I cannot I will receive a less than desirable grade. I write academic essays when my professors, whom also happen to be the audience, assign them to me. This is why when writing my essays I use proper English, correct grammar, formal wording, and MLA formatting. The purpose of my essays is to show to my professor that I have a full understanding of the material I am writing. Writing with a formal tone allows my professors to understand that I am a professional student who takes pride in my academic studies. Using MLA formatting is important for organizational purposes, making my writing easy to follow. The content of my essays are just as important as the formatting, as I have to make sure and avoid errors. I always try my best to be sure that I am using correct grammar, leaving out any slang terms, to assure my professors that I am well educated. Using words such as like and things may come as lazy, uncreative, and unprofessional.

Nash 2 Writing an essay is not always easy for me. I often find it difficult to express my ideas clearly while still sounding intelligent. Since I am pursuing a career in nursing I have had to write many research papers that are often over medicine or a health related topic. I am required to take a class called Medical Terminology and transform complicated texts and research into simple every day language that any ordinary person can fully understand. I have taken a lot of research, with complicated words, and condensed it into a simple sentence such as, it is not surprising that only 15% of teens get the required amount of sleep necessary for each night. (1). It is necessary for me to simplify the language used in the medical world to inform others. This is because, for people who may not be familiar with the language used by medical professionals, provided information needs to be displayed in a way that is beneficial in which the reader can understand. Whether it be for a Science or English course, each of my professors expect nothing but the best. It is necessary to use a professional tone, correct grammar, and proper formatting in order to be taken seriously by my professors. In contrast to other modes of communication, I would never use specific words or phrases that are considered unprofessional in a formal paper and I am always sure to edit each assignment thoroughly.
