I. OBJECTIVE:
Read with correct pronunciation, enunciation and comprehension the text given both
For oral and silent reading;
Answer questions taken from the text correctly and confidently; and
Understand the importance of good reading habits through the corrections given by
the teacher.

ORAL READING
a. Give the pupil the passage for his/her grade level. Read the PROMPT.
b. The prompt is necessary to activate the pupils prior knowledge about the
passage. It will also motivate the pupil to be interested in the passage which
will put him/her at ease during reading.
c. Ask the pupil to read the passage of his/her grade level orally. If the
pupil hesitates and looks at you for assurance, encourage him/her to go on.
As the pupil reads, mark all errors on the pupils individual Phil-IRI Form
1Grade Level Passage Rating Sheet.
d. Be guided in marking this sheet by Word Recognition Error Marking
System for English and Filipino.
SILENT READING

a. Establish rapport with the pupils. Explain to the pupils that they are
going to record the time after they read the passage silently and carefully as
fast as they can.
b. Say: Today, you are going to read a passage silently as fast as you
can. I would also like to find out how well each one of you understand the
passage.
c. Distribute the passage to each pupil. Let them accomplish all the
personal information(Name, Grade & Section). All pupils should start reading
the passage.
d. Say:No one should start reading the passage until instructed.
e. Place the improvised number card s on the board. Take note of the
time started. After thirty seconds(30 seconds) that the pupils have
started reading, start flashing
Cards (begin with 30) and every ten seconds thereafter (10 seconds
interval). Continue flashing the cards until everybody has finished
reading the passage.
e. Say:Read the passage silently. After reading the passage, look at the
number shown on the number card. Write the number on the space
provided(Reading Time:______ Seconds).

Practice reading short stories at home. Use your English Reading and Filipino Pagbasa
books.
