Overall Aims of the Course The prime objective of teaching this course is to familiarize the students with synthesis details, properties, characterization, and applications of high performance polymers in the more challenging industrial areas like aerospace, defense, energy, electronics, automotives, and special surface coatings. Such polymers provide improved set of properties like high servicetemperatures at extreme conditions and good mechanical strength, dimensional stability, thermal degradation resistance, environmental stability, solvent resistance, and improved electrical properties.

Intended Learning Outcomes At the end of this week, the students will be able to: -Have good knowledge, history of the development and a general overview about the Engineering Polymers/ High Performance Polymers. -All the basic definitions concepts of the subject as well as the applications of Engineering Polymers in various industrial fields. At the end of this week, the students will be able to: -Properties of commercial PPO-PS and PPO-Nylon Blends. -Design of PPO molded parts. -Electrical properties and applications of PPO Blends. At the end of this week, the students will be able to learn about: -Ionomer Synthesis and Characterization - Chemical Modification of Commercially Available Polysulfones - Properties and applications of Polysulfone-Based Ionomers. -Applications of Polysulfones. At the end of this week, the students will be able to learn about: -Polymerization, Properties and applications of High-Performance Aromatic Process able Polyamides. -Processing and properties of Polyamides. -Applications of Imide Copolymers. At the end of these weeks, the students will be able to know about: -Structure and Properties of PTFE -Frictional behavior & abrasion resistance of Polyfluorocarbons. -Fluorocarbon Copolymers. -Applications of Polyflurocarbons. At the end of this week, the students will be able to learn about: -Properties of Polyether Ketones. -Applications of PEK and PEEK. At the end of this week, the students will be able to know about: -The properties and applications of Acrylic Ester Polymers, Cyanoacrylic Easter Polymers, Polyacrylamide, Flocculants and Polyalkyl Methacylates etc. At the end of this week, the students will be able to learn about: -The processing of POM along with its electrical, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties. -Resistance of POM to creep and fatigue stress. -Health & Safety factors for POM Mid-semester Examination At the end of this week, the students will be able to: -the introduction, properties and applications of high performance fibers including: aramids, glass fibers, carbon fibers, ceramic fibers, chemically & thermally resistant fibers etc. At the end of this week, the students will be able to learn about: -The properties and uses of inorganic polymers: such as hydraulic cement, Silicones, Polysulfur Nitride, Glass structures and concrete structures etc. Page 3 of 7

At the end of this week, the students will be able to:-Know about the synthesis and Properties of styrene copolymers such as: SAN, Styrene Maleic Anhydride copolymers, SMA-PC Alloy, ABS terpolymer, AN copolymers etc. along with their Thermal & Mechanical Properties and their applications in various engineering fields. At the end of this week, the students will be able to:- The synthesis, properties and applications of Polycarbonates. At the end of this week, the students will be able to:-The synthesis, properties and applications of Liquid Crystalline Polymers in various fields. -Commercial Liquid Crystalline Polymers (LCPs). At the end of this week, the students will be able to:-know about the commercial development of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) such as styrenics, polyesters, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), Polyamides and thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer etc. for engineering applications. At the end of these week, the students will be able to: -learn about the fiber reinforcement of various thermoplastics through surface treatments, polymers blends and rubber toughening etc. -Unique applications of Polymeric Composites. At the end of these week, the students will be able to know about: -The requirements of polymers in telecommunications and power transmission. -Polymers as insulators. -Optical fiber telecommunication cables. -Optically non-linear polymers in telecommunications.
