King of Sweden visits Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY - King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, accompanied by Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay and other dignitaries, arrived in this city to pay homage to Boy Scouts in the city who perished during the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda last November 8, 2013. His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, heads the World Scout Movement. Vice President Jejoman Binay, on the other hand, is the national president of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. The King also led the distribution of scouting uniforms to 75 senior and 100 boy scouts at the San Jose National High School and the San Fernando Elementary School. After the distribution, the King and his party went to the Boy Scout Rotunda for a short program. City-owned property at Curva too expensive to develop for resettlement
A 6-HECTARE proposed relocation site purchased by the City Government in the year 2000, under Mayor Eufrocino Codilla Sr., could be a white elephant after all. The 13th Sanggunian Panglunsod, this week, during its regular session, found out that the area could not be used for socialized housing because developing it would be very expensive. Councilor Roland Villasencio, chairman of the committee on land use and zoning, said they were considering the property for socialized housing as it was already owned by the City. It would not only save the city millions from acquiring a new property but make it useful also, considering it has been there for 15 years already and left unused. The property is a rice field. A small area along the highway is not, which is now occupied. The national government has asked the LGU to come up with a suitable site for socialized housing to resettle victims of Yolanda, including informal settlers. Pres. Benigno Simeon C. Aquino, in his visit here after the supertyphoon, told city officials that if they have a site ready, that his office would release funds for socialized housing. However, Villasencio, in his committee report, said that Engr. Raoul Cam, city planning officer, said that it was unsuitable for the program for two reasons. One is the high cost of its development and second, that it was flood prone. Cam also informed Villasencio and committee members that the same property was already presented to the National Housing Authority for the same purpose. It was rejected by the NHA for the reason that developing it was costly. The City bought the lot in the year 2000 from Josefina Martinez de Cordova and NOW SHOWING @ Richard Raymond L. Cordova. The purchase price was P 71.00 per square meter or a total of P Jan. 29-Feb. 4, 2014 4,341,863.00. It was intended as additional relocation site for those displaced by the JICA flood mitigation project but was never developed after it was purchased. Ex-traffic enforcer, 7 accomplices arrested for copper wire thefts

ORMOC CITY Eight people, including a minor, were arrested by the police over the week for the rash of thieveries that have victimized various telephone companies here, including the electric cooperative, setting back the restoration work on the power and telecommunications for weeks now aside from causing millions of damages to the company. The suspects were identified as Alexander Lato, 32, a resident of Brgy. Linao; Florentino Canque, 53, tricycle driver; Leonardo Abao, 18; Nio Caballes, 19; Regie Calles, 30; Jovanie Tumulak, 24; Edgardo Lumanta, another tricycle driver and the minor Ivan. The tricycle drivers motorcycles had the police numbers 504 and 1670. The suspect Alexander Lato is being pinpointed as the mastermind of the thieveries. He was a traffic enforcer during the time of former Mayor Eric Codilla and was fired just last October, for alleged abuse of authority. He is said to be close to personalities of the previous administration. The group was arrested by the police intelligence division composed of PO3 Danilo Rebato, PO3 Alberto Pepito, and PO3 Romeo Blanco. In an interview with the arresting team, Pepito said they arrested the group at Brgy. Doa Feliza Mejia. In a routine inspection, they found the group had copper wires in their possession, a saw for cutting metal, flashlights, screw drivers and other things that could be used to cut wires. Last week, the police also caught four people said to be involved in the same modus. They were identified as Al Campus, 38, residing in Brgy. San Pablo and a native of Tabango, Leyte; Mark Noel Calixtro, 24; Noel Cabcaban, 24 and Eric Retana, all of Brgy. San Antonio. From Singapore with Love

Five young concert artists from Singapore, three of which are of Filipino descent, and a Cebuana who has found her niche in the entertainment industry in the Land of the Merlion, were in Ormoc City on Saturday, January 25, for a free concert dubbed From Singapore with Love. The concert was held at the Ormoc Superdome from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM where the group sang popular songs aside from two Waray favorites, Ang Balud and Waray-Waray. From left: Pamela Wildheart Pilapil of Cebu who is now a major recording artist and host in Singapore, Princess Jean Kyaw, Neil Chan Thim Yan, Gail Alexandra Belmonte, Low Eng Kim and Miranda Ho Sze-Yi. Kyaw and Yan were born in the Philippines while Belmonte is half Filipina, half Myanmar. After Ormoc, they proceeded to Tacloban, Borongan and Guiuan to also hold free concerts there. The artists were brought over by the Help Direct Initiative founded by Mary Jane Salomon, publisher of the Bagong Bayani, a magazine about OFWs in Singapore. Mary Jane is from Northern Samar herself and empathizes with Yolanda victims.

DA gives farmers, fishers in four Leyte towns equipment, implements

TACLOBAN CITY In order to help the food security stakeholders, the Department of Agriculture recently turned over farm implements and fishing equipment to farmers and fishermen from four towns of Leyte who were affected by super typhoon Yolanda. Despite inclement weather, had with them around 30 kilos of copper wires. Work on restoring telecommunication lines in the city has been hampered after these thieves preyed on the lines of Globe, Ortelco and PLDT. All of them have recorded reports of their lines being stolen just a day after it is laid out. The cable lines, which cost millions, are just vandalized for its copper which is being sold to junkshops here for P 400 to P 500 a kilo. Perez, BFAR 8 Director Juan Albaladejo and PCA Assistant Director Joel Pilapil during the turnover rites. Together with Senator Cynthia Villar, the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, the team handed over ten motorized bancas, 500 bags of vegetables and fruits seeds for backyard gardening comprising of kangkong, cucumber, tomato, watermelon and mass melon to each of the towns of Tabango, Villaba, Calubian and Leyte. The team also turned over ten bags of corn seeds at 18 kg per bag and 125 coconut seedlings with entitlement and certificate for a maximum of 500 pieces per farmer based on the allowed 100 coconut seedlings per one hectare from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA). The distribution was part of the continuing program of the Department of Agriculture. It was learned that DA will continue distributing vegetable seeds for the inter-cropping. An additional 20,000 coconut seedlings will be distributed in the next six months. Meanwhile, it was also learned that more motorized bancas are expected to be given to all fishermen within the next six months. The arrival of the King of Sweden momentarily thawed the usual chilly relations between Mayor Alfred Romualdez and the Petillas. Gov. Dom Petilla is seen here sharing a good laugh. that the King of Sweden has been a lifelong supporter of the Scouting Movement. He was himself a scout when he was 10 years old. King Gustaf accepted the role of Honorary Chairman of the World Scouting Foundation in 1977 and has since been leading the WSF in raising funds to support scouting projects worldwide. Among his stops in Tacloban City was to Boy Scout Building to see the extent of its damage. Antonio Cinco added that the King also made a side trip to Anibong where four ships beached 100 meters inland. Lunch was held at the Leyte Park Hotel. There, the king received tokens from various agencies. Department of Tourism regional director Karina Rosa Tiopes presented the King with a painting by local artist Dante Enage using tuba (coconut wine) on canvas as his medium. It was a painting of the Curacha, a courtship dance often called Waray-waray in Tacloban and Samar. After lunch, King Gustaf and company was shown around some of Leytes historical monu ments, among them the Scout in Motion monument at the government center in Palo, Leyte and the Leyte Landing monument. They left shortly for Manila afterwards. King Carl XVI Gustaf arrived in the Philippines on Saturday. When he left, it was the promise that he would continue to support the programs of the Boys Scouts, especially those in Leyte. Sweden, it was further learned, were among the first countries that sent aid and assistance over to Tacloban and Yolandastricken areas.

Great calamities bring great changes

IT JUST rocked, literally, as I was working on our top floor. I could hear the neighbors shouting booo. It was an earthquake. By my estimates, could have been a 3.5 to 4.0 magnitude. I was wondering, are these manifestations of climate change? The earthquakes? Shortly before Yolanda, we were so engrossed with the news on the Bohol earthquake. We just woke up on November 8 to be the it in the news ourselves. I had just finished browsing Facebook. From here, to Mindanao and the US, people are complaining of the bitter cold. In Australia, its Australia Day by the way, they are complaining of extreme heat. They are roasting there while were practically freezing here.

The art of preaching

THOUGH SOME people consider preaching as some kind of public enemy to be shot down, the truth is that we need preaching, since preaching is none other than transmitting the living word of God. Its a necessity in our life: for our survival, for our enlightenment, and especially for our salvation. Gods word gives life, nourishment, light, purification and redemption. Not by bread alone does man live, but by every word of God, (Lk 4,4) we are told clearly by Christ. Thats why we need to see to it that we develop and ever polish the art of preaching, which is a vital extension and participation of the preaching of Christ. Through the powers of the sacraments and the liturgy, Christs preaching continues up to now, this time making use of authorized ministers. This is how we have to view preaching. Its not just some priest yakking at a certain point in the Mass. It is delivering and listening to the word of God as expressed once by St. Paul when he extolled the Thessalonians: We give thanks to God...because when you heard and received from us the word of God, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but, as it truly is, the word of God who works in you who have believed. (1 Thes 2,13) Its about time that we give serious attention to this very important aspect of our life, since as we all know a lot of flaws, confusion and wrong practices have marred it through the years. I remember that as a kid in the early 60s, I would go home at the start of the homily on Sundays to take breakfast, and when I came back, it was still the homily. Practically everyone was bored and disconnected. Thank God, a lot of improvement has taken place since then. The men do not anymore flee from the church during the sermon. The priests in general have acquired an engaging way to deliver their homilies. Still a lot of things need to be done. We have to understand that what is involved in preaching and in listening to it is Gods Word, which is not just any word. If we have to go theological about it, Gods Word is the very Son of God who became man to redeem us. Gods Word, perfect God and perfect man, is the perfect and sole bridge and mediator between God and us. When we preach and when we listen to it, this basic reality has to be very much in mind, otherwise we will miss the point and will get entangled with the peripherals. Living faith is needed by both preacher and hearer, a faith that exudes itself externally. Thus, the preacher has to be more a witness to that faith than a teacher of it. And the hearer has to be a believer, touched first by Gods grace, since otherwise nothing of Gods Word would enter his heart if he does not have faith. It is in this regard that on the part of the preacher, all effort should be done to vitally immerse himself both in God and in others, acting like a bridge and mediator between God and men as Christ was and is. He should plunge deep into the knowledge of the doctrine of Christ, the fullness of Gods

At the general assembly and election of officers of the Ormoc Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. held at Ormoc Villa Hotel this evening, Friday, we got to talking about the food shortage the city experienced after days of nonstop rains brought about by Typhoon Agaton. A friend in Mindanao, Coring Supino, posted in her Facebook that Agaton was a misnomer. The Typhoon should have been named Igaton because nag-igat-igat pa and nagpadudingduding before it left the country for good. It seemed very few parts of the country were spared by the capricious I-gaton. Igatons paduding-duding resulted to a food shortage. Because we still lack local produce to sell in our markets, we are now very dependent on what can be shipped from Cebu and Mindanao vegetables, poultry and even canned goods. However, nothing could be shipped here because there were no trips, whether by slow boat or fast craft for a record of five days! By Thursday, the first sunny day in several weeks, people went out to shop, only to find shelves almost empty. Meat shops were closed because no new stocks came in. Stores in Baybay City down to Maasin were in similar straits. They were not only catering to locals but people from as far as Tacloban had already driven there to buy what they need. The food shortage did not only affect us. Tacloban, too, had a shortage. Ms Olive Tiu, Philippine Information Agency regional director, in her newsbits said that they were also having a shortage in their parts. Aside from Cebu, Tacloban also gets its goods from Manila. However, that route was also cut off because huge waves prevented ferries to cross from Matnog to Allen. Now that the weather is better, things are expected to resume to normal. But our problems do not end with a good weather. There is the specter of the food arriving, the integrity of which might have been compromised. According to one lady at our table, she knows that truckloads of frozen poultry meat were held up at Matnog port for days already because of the waves. Whether the meat arrives to us in a very healthy state or compromised already has yet to be seen.

Was Sen. Bong Revillas bombshell a dud?

WHEN SEN. BONG delivered his privilege speech in the Senate lately, it was as if there was another one of his block buster movies like he always did in showbusiness. His whole family was there including former Senator Ramon Revilla, his aging father, who became emotional towards the end of his speech and was even left in tears, wife Rep. Lani Mercado, son Vice Gov. Jolo Revilla and a long list of supporters in politics and in show business. He even presented a toy truck loaded with stacks of documents as if to show Justice Secretary Leila de Lima that he also has lots of documents to support his claim of innocence to the charges of corruption on his use of the pork barrel fund prepared by the Justice Department. When Sen. Bong Revilla made his privilege speech, was it timely? This corner believes his speech did not go with the times. He should have done it when the issue was still hot, perhaps, immediately after that of Sen. Jinggoys or even that of Sen. Enriles. He could have scored plenty of points with some of his disclosures. For example: how come Sec. Mar Roxas personally drove his official car for him instead of a regular driver; how come he (Mar) took pains of hiding his cars plate number (No. 6) as if it was a covert operation involving state secrets; how come this clandestine procedure that reminds us of a James Bond operation, fraught with sus-pense and intrigue and drama. It can readily be seen that the government went to such an extent of the Executive Department, a co-equal body, putting its dirty finger on the affairs of the Senate. The office of a President can do wonders in the way of pushing for a program if he puts his mind to it. This kind of statesmanship could have been well appreciated if it was done for the good of the country. But what was it for? Just to impeach a Chief Justice whose crime could be debatable: Non-disclosure of dollar accounts in his yearly SALN (Statement of Assets Liabilities & Net Worth). Much bigger crimes more than ten times - are committed everyday in Metro Manila. And what could be reprehensible is the use of the PDAF to lure lawmakers and lull them to sign in the complaint for an easy and early release of their pork barrel, some of which are additional. Since the pork barrel is the peoples money, we the people, became accessories after the fact. Maybe the reason could be much bigger than what it appears to be. Can it be because the administration is pushing for Mar Roxas as its candidate for President? Too bad because he was also this corners choice. In the beginning, he was doing great guns. It is not just anybody that can graduate from the prestigious Harvard. He has a diploma tucked under his arms from such a school. When he was Secretary of Trade in the first Cabinet of PGMA, his star soared to high heavens. Hence, this corner finds it impos-sible for him to lose to Binay in the Vice Presidency. Be that as it may, the fiasco he created in Tacloban, in the aftermath of the typhoon Yolanda, ruined completely his face. His star is now in tatters. Gone is the Roxas mystique from that of Pres. Manuel Roxas, first President of the Republic of the Philip-pines in 4 July 1946. This corner knows of an information concerning how Pres. Roxas got the presidency in a silver platter from Pres. Manuel Quezon. Despite the SC declaring the pork barrel as unconstitutional, the House is hell bent in fighting this seeming impasse. What is now going to happen? Maybe go back to martial law?

About Taekwondo
BECAUSE OF LACK of exercise during the long winter months in Nebraska, I took up taekwondo. As part of the training, I memorized the commands in Korean, learned the basic steps and even managed to slowly get promoted to different belt colors. But I never reached black. Many people are surprised to hear that in the 1970s I learned taekwondo, one of the more popular forms of martial arts, in the United States. Finding available classes was not that easy because of the demand to learn this art has not yet spread then. Today, taekwondo classes are everywhere for men, women, beginners, advanced students, kids, teens and adults. Originally established nearly 2000 years ago, taekwondo gained its popularity in South Korea in the 1950s. It was then that taekwondo began to take off and eventually turned into one of the most practiced forms of martial arts by the late 1980s. In 2000, taekwondo became an Olympic event and has become even more recognized worldwide, thus there has been an increase in enrollees in martial arts schools nationwide. Evidence of taekwondo existence as a systematic defense method using the bodys instinctive reflexes can be traced back to ceremonial games that were performed during religious events in the era of the ancient tribal states. Taekwondo largely involves the use of the legs with the many kicks required in taekwondo. The reason for this is that the legs are the strongest extremity. Taekwondo involves a wide variety of different kicks and knees. The most used kicks in taekwondo include the hook kick, side kick, turning kick, roundhouse kick, back kick, front kick, spinning side kick, axe kick and crescent kick. The blocks used in taekwondo are the low block, middle block, high block, inward block and outer forearm block. Taekwondo primarily focuses on blocks, punches, kicks and open-handed strikes. Also important to taekwondo training are throws, take-downs and joint locks. Self-defense is another central part of taekwondo training. You will find that there are many different styles of hear. Thus, the preacher should be in constant contact with flock to such an extent that as the Pope said, he himself would smell like a sheep. Among the traditional sports that have been revived in modern times, the martial art of taekwondo is one of the most widely practiced. This self-defense martial art has become a popular international sport in the last quarter century with thousands of Korean instructors now teaching taekwondo in more than 150 countries. When I joined ViSCA in 1977 and decided to revive my interest in taekwondo, it was unheard of and did not really take off until the late 90s. By then I was busy with my career, raising kids and already getting old and creaky. Taekwondo uses the entire body, particularly the hands and feet. I could not be that limber anymore at my age so its a distinct limitation. Taekwondo not only strengthens ones physical well-being, but also cultivates character via physical and mental training, coupled with techniques for discipline. I am glad that children, preteens and teens (even girls!) are taking up the sport at VFES, VLHS and VSU. Thats a healthy sign.

He recommended that after praying to the Holy Spirit, one thoroughly studies, reflects and meditates on the Biblical text that should be the basis for the homily. Then Gods word has to be personalized, going beyond the technicalities of the text and employing the lectio divina, one has to ask himself what God wants to say to him with the words. Ormoc Chamber has new president

THE ORMOC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. have elected its new set of officers after holding its general assembly on the afternoon of Friday, January 24. The chambers new president is Atty. Nolito Quilang, who was formerly its vice-president for chamber management. The general assembly also elected seven new board members to fill in the posts left by board members whose terms expired, including outgoing president Iigo Larrazabal. They will be serving the chamber for the next two years. They are Raymund Tan, Angel Ignacio Veloso III, Eric Joseph Tolo whove served previously; and newbies Emily Rodriguez, Dennis de Veyra, Claire Lagado and Katherine Abuel. The members of the old board whose terms are yet to expire are Ro meo Ocampo Jr., Roy Pangilinan, Reynaldo Franco, Ma. Lourdes Alagon, and Orlando Salino. The chamber also welcomed into its midst five new member establish ments, among them Be bidas whose owner Claire Lagado was elected into the board. In his valedictory address, Iigo Larrazabal said it was a fruitful two years and it was about time for him to step back and let young blood take the reins of the chamber. He also said the chamber was in capable hands of its new president, who was his very efficient partner in running the affairs of the chamber. The guest for the evening was Kasper Engborg of the United Nation-Office Coordinating Humanitarian Assistance (UN-OCHA) for the Ormoc Hub. He gave the chamber a post-Yolanda situationer of what various humanitarian groups were doing in the city. The chamber learned that of 59 non-governmental humanitarian organizations working in the western part of Leyte, 48 were directly working with Ormocanons in rehabilitating and rebuilding it.

The outgoing and new board members pose with new Chamber president Nolitz Quilang and outgoing president Iigo Larrazabal for posterity. Last January 12, American John Gregory Cassier wed his beloved Adelaida Lanie Enero in Church. The couple met by chance and it was a case of love at first sight for the handsome American. Petitioner has to have his case evaluated by a clinical psychologist, Dr. Andres Suan Gerong, who found out that respondent is suffering from NACISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER. Agaton causes new displacements in Yolanda hit areas
TACLOBAN CITY About 30% of tents collapsed and over 1,600 people were evacuated in Guiuan, Eastern Samar as a result of the latest tropical depression Agaton. The UN OCHA said most of the 295 families who were forced to evacuate from the tent city in Eastern Samar State University and hundreds more people who left their homes returned after two days, while Shelter Cluster partners helped to fix the damaged homes in other parts of the province. It was learned that four out of five evacuation centers were forced to close due to the storm. The families evacuated from the ESSU tent to unoccupied bunkhouses and private warehouses. Some evacuation centers in Tacloban it was learned also experienced flooding. The bad weather also flooded and damaged many temporary learning sites, adversely affecting school attendance for the week in Region 8, the weekly report of UN OCHA stated. The evacuees continue to be accommodated in schools as they are from the no build zonesor areas prone to flooding. PIA

Rotary Club of Ormoc Bay turns over medical beds, meds to Ormoc Maternity & Childrens Hospital
THE ROTARY Club of Ormoc Bay, in continuation of their Yolanda relief efforts, turned over to the Ormoc Maternity and Childrens Hospital recently nine hospital beds with mattresses, a radiant warmer for premature babies, and over 100 boxes of assorted medical supplies. Boxes of shampoo were also turned-over for hospital employees. The donations were from friends of IPI owner Bong Castillo, who is also a Rotarian of Cebu, who decided to share it with the maternity hospital through the representation of RCOB member Dr. Rosemarie Cam. In gratitude to the donation facilitated by the RCOB, the hospital promised to accommodate at least one beneficiary patient of the RCOB free bed and board for a few days each month. I am very thankful. This will augment our operation especially since the cost of our rehabilitation alone is too much. Our beds were damaged said Dr. Alicia Tugonon, Medical Director. She shared to the Rotarians the struggles of the hospital from the moment it was constructed. Then, she said, First Lady Imelda Marcos allotted a P 50,000 for its construction and operation. Afterwards, the RCOB proceeded to Brgy. Curva to distribute additional relief supplies. That was their second visit to the barangay. The first one was on November 24, 2013. The residents of Brgy. Curva, with 3,730 population, were already lined up when the Rotarians arrived. They are very orderly and organized here, said Assistant Governor Stephanie Twinkle Chu. The distribution of goods that includes medicine, hygiene kits and two dozens of shampoo each was finished in less than ten minutes. There was a total of 927 household-recipients. Next week, it was further learned, the club goes to Sto. Nio for another distribution. The club also helped rehabilitate the classrooms in Sto. Nio, providing GI sheets for its lost roof. Atty. Luz Escalon, club president, said the medical supplies and equipment were already available through Rotary Help Network International prior to the typhoon. It was initially intended for Bohol earthquake victims. But when Yolanda struck, supplies were realigned and typhoon-victims prioritized. Rico Blanco, OXFAM launches handwashing jingle

TACLOBAN CITY The OXFAM Typhoon Yolanda Emergency Response with Rico Blanco, the Water Sanitation and Hygiene Cluster and the Department of Health and with the assistance of the US Foreign Disaster Assistance, recently launched the Handwashing Jingle for the benefit of the disaster affected communities in Eastern Visayas. Ms. Meriam Asibal of the Oxfam GB Humanitarian Department said that main idea of the jingle is for the public to remember that the simple act of Hand Washing with soap will save family members from being ill with diarrhea and other related diseases. The other message is for the families to act wisely and to wash their hands with soap and water before eating and after cleaning babies poo poo and after using the comfort rooms. Ms. Asibal called on the Philippine Information Agency to help OXFAM in the airing of the jingle in its radio station and other friendly stations in the region, especially in the areas affected by typhoon Yolanda. In return, the PIA will also request government and private media partners to help in the promotion of the Handwashing Jingle. PIA

DSWD, DILG start survey of No Build Zone affected homes

TACLOBAN CITY DSWD and DILG workers started this to go around coastal municipalities to identify how many poor families must be relocated from the 40-meter no build zone. This was the information given by DSWD Secretary Corazon Soliman herself, during her recent visit to the region. She dialogued with local chief executives and members of Leyte Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council led by Governor Dominic L. Petilla. Soliman, who said the move would affect poor fisherfolk, underscored that by the end of the month, firm listing of the families for the new communities will already be ready. The Secretary also stressed that the agreement is for the Local Government Units to buy the relocation lot while the National Government will take care of the site development and all those needed to build a new community. For those Okay to Build Areas, meaning they are not included in the 40-meter No Build Zones, the policy is for the national government to provide P 30,000 worth of materials or shelter kits to families whose homes were totally damaged. In fact, the DSWD has started doing this in pilot areas of Leyte and Eastern Samar particularly Tanauan, Leyte and Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Secretary Soliman said that to date, DSWD has already distributed 83,584 GI sheets in Leyte and Eastern Samar and will continue to distribute the same in coordination with the social welfare officers of LGUs whose main job is to inform them where to bring the construction materials for distribution. The process is the DPWH makes the procurement while the DSWD distributes them to the identified areas and families. If the LGU has the means, it helps in the transport of the materials. Moreover, it was learned that Secretary Ping Lacson is also coordinating with the private sector and corporations, and has divided the entire Region to 24 clusters. PIA

Visual arts fest slated in Tacloban for Feb

TACLOBAN CITY The National Commission for Culture and the Arts is set to hold the Philippine Visual Arts Extreme in Manila Hotel on February 15-19 and in Tacloban City, Leyte on February 20-23. The Philippine Visual Arts Festival, said Mr. Nemi Miranda who is the head of the National Committee on Visual Arts, is one of the seven flagship programs of NCCA for its Philippine Arts Festival which will gather visual artists from all over the country for a lined up activities including conferences, exhibitions, competitions, workshops, painting lessons, tours and many others. During the recently held press conference at the Harampang Ha PIA, Mr. Miranda said the Philippines is celebrating the whole month of February as the Philippine Arts Month as provided for by the Presidential Proclamation No. 681 issued in 1991. As the countrys main agency for the arts and culture, the NCCA headed by its chairman Felipe de Leon, Jr. leads the celebration of the National Arts Month with the conduct of the National Arts Festival. For this year, the theme of the Philippine Arts Festival is Art on the Edge highlighting the advancements achieved in the different art forms the innovations, the modern evolution of art and the artistic creations in the peripheries. Mr. Miranda called on the local artists from Leyte and Samar to unite and help NCCA in the staging of the Philippine Visual Arts Extreme in Leyte. He said the success of the activity will largely depend in their collective effort. With the private and public sectors as parts, the PAF 2014 promises to be an exhilarating celebration of the arts, Mr. Miranda added.
