Remarks On Color

Remarks On Color is scored for a mixed ensemble of 6-9 mobile musicians. Each page of the score is set on a stand, each stand distributed around the performance space. A suggested
layout is shown in the diagram. Three amplified playback stations are also present. Playback is begun in sync with the ensembles stopwatches. The ensemble adjusts the volume
of each station throughout the piece. At minimum, each station can be silent. Maximum levels at each station should be determined by the space, but should not overpower the
instruments.

Each musician should carry a stopwatch. All stopwatches are started in sync with the playback stations. Musicians gather in one place away from the stations, determined by the
performance space. Throughout the piece, musicians choose to approach any stand and play the score corresponding to the current time on the stopwatch. Additionally, musicians
may approach a playback station at any time, and adjust the volume within the limits suggested above. Musicians should return to the gathering location periodically throughout the
piece to create a continuous change in active ensemble.
Ideal performances would have a variation in the active ensemble from no players to full ensemble.
Pitches should be played as notated (not concert pitch) and clef is determined by instrument. If pitches fall outside the range of an instrument, octave transpositions may be used.
Score sections using stemless notation are to be played freely with regard to tempo and rhythm. The timings below the staff are suggestions, and note and rest lengths are determined
by the player.
