Welcome to Maryland Newsline, Im Anchor 1 And Im Anchor 2But first I just returned from Prince Georges County Circuit Court where two police officers are fighting charges of beating University of Maryland students after 2009!s Maryland-Duke basketball game. Reginald Baker and James Harrison had their second day in court today, charged with assault and misconduct. The prosecution called five more witnesses, their arguments relying heavily on this infamous video of the beating. According to the prosecution, the continued use of the baton on student John McKenna after he was compliant and down on the ground constituted excessive force. McKenna was struck 12- times within just a few seconds. However the Defense says it was a true riot situation, which one witness described as a stampede of humans, and officers felt threatened. Attorneys for the police officers say Baker and Harrison were using the baton to get McKenna, the grandson of a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge, to show them his hands. But an expert witness for the prosecution said the continuous strikes never even gave McKenna a chance to respond. The defense is expected to begin calling witnesses tomorrow.
