Purpose:
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to identify, solve, and apply mathematical principles involving temperature, weights, and measures used in the health care community. This event shall be a written test dealing with selected problems involving conversions between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales and the metric and household systems of measurement. It will also involve identification of related symbols and abbreviations, in addition to other complex math functions practiced in the health professions. Competitors must be in official HOSA uniform or in proper business attire. Bonus points will be awarded for proper dress. 1. Competitors in this event must be active members of HOSA-Future Health Professionals, in good standing in the category in which they are registered to compete (Secondary or Postsecondary/Collegiate). Competitors must be familiar with and adhere to the General Rules and Regulations of the National HOSA Competitive Events Program (GRR)." The test will consist of fifty (50) test items and tiebreaker questions. Test Plan:* Mathematical essentials .................................................................. 5% Measurement and conversion problems ....................................... 20% Drug dosages and intravenous solutions ...................................... 35% Dilutions, solutions and concentrations ......................................... 25% Interpreting medical information .................................................... 15% o Charts, graphs, tables o Basic statistics: mean, median, mode, standard deviation o Calculating body surface NOTE: 1. Abbreviations should be used in written problems. 2. At least half of the computation and calculation problems will involve conversions.

*For 2013-14, the test plan for any tests administered at the Regional/Area level will follow the 2012-13 event guidelines. The 50 multiple choice items on the 2014 state test will follow the 2012-13 test plan. The 2014 state test will include the revised tie-breaker process of 10 complex, multi-step questions following the Test Plan listed above. The test administered at the 2014 NLC will follow the test plan and test process revisions in these guidelines. NOTE: States/regions may use a different process for testing, to include but not limited to pre-conference testing, online testing, and testing at a computer. Check with your Area/Region/State for the process you will be using. 4. At the National Leadership Conference, HOSA will provide basic handheld calculators for addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

The conversion chart included in these guidelines will be used as the official reference for the test for uniformity. Competitors may not use a conversion chart during the test. A series of ten (10) complex, multi-step tie breaking questions will be administered with the original test. In case of a tie, successive tie-breaker questions will be used until a winner is determined. In the tie-breaker, correct spelling is required for an item to be considered correct. All competitors shall report to the site of the event at the time designated for the event orientation. The test will immediately follow the orientation. No proxies will be allowed for the orientation. At NLC 2014 the Scantron form for this event will require competitors to grid-in their responses. Test Instructions: All competitors will be given a test, a Scantron answer form and two (2) sheets of blank paper. Competitors will be given instructions on the use of the Scantron form. After instructions have been given, the competitors will be notified to start the test. There will be a maximum of 90 minutes to complete the test. There will be a verbal announcement when there are 15 minutes remaining for the test period. Competitors may be excused from the testing site promptly after completion of the test.
