3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

Join us for a fun-filled day of competitive basketball! Enjoy great competition and test your skills against players from Winnetka and throughout the North Shore. This is your chance to take advantage of the excitement during the Final Four weekend. This double elimination tournament is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth graders interested in learning, enhancing and developing their skills. Each four player team should be registered together by one team leader. That leader will receive a confirmation email with times and details at least five days before the event. Tournament timing may be adjusted based on the number of teams. MAGIC AND MUSIC SHOW This show is a very interactive blend of kid friendly magic with music, games and contests. The show starts off with a 1520 minute child-friendly magical performance including many opportunities for the children to help with the tricks. After the magic show our performer will lead guests in games, age appropriate music, television trivia and many fun dances to great music. Ages: 512 $295 for 20 guests. $5 for each additional child. GRAFFITI PAINTING Have fun painting on a canvas to create your own graffiti masterpiece using stencils, tape resist, stamping, dripping and brushing. At the end of this party children will have a colorful and exciting piece of art that is ready to take home and hang on the wall. One hour of instruction, paint and painting supplies are included in the cost. Blank canvases are additional. Dress for a mess or bring a smock. Jennifer Doherty has been teaching art at public and private schools for over 28 years. She holds a Masters degree in art and museum education and has worked for the Davenport Art Gallery in Iowa as the art education specialist. Jennifer has studied in Vermont, Massachusetts and Georgia working in fibers and fabric design. Extraordinary Kids Kindergarten Enrichment The curriculum and materials for Extraordinary Kids has been personally created and developed by directors Carol Modes and Susie Blau. Modes worked for the Deerfield Public Schools for 14 years teaching kindergarten, second and fourth grade classes and as a gifted education instructor. Susie Blau has a Master of Arts degree in behavioral psychology and has worked as a consultant to families and educators for over 15 years. Judith has a passion for amateur photography in her spare time. Carole Pearlman is the founder of The Joy of Creativity art program. Inspiring curriculum, freedom of expression and opportunities to explore many art materials make this innovative program a creative success for each student. Carole holds a BFA in painting and a Masters degree in Education and Psychology. Brandon Seyferth is a critically acclaimed songwriter and composer who is accomplished and versatile on the guitar, blues piano, drums and voice. Revue Magazine has dubbed one of the bands he has led to be the greatest band to come out of Chicago since the group Morphine in the 80s. Seyferth has performed and composed with some of musics biggest names, such as Victor Delarenzo (Violent Femmes), Jackson Browne, Pat MacDonald (Timbuk3), Eric McFadden (P-Funk and Stockholm Syndrome), and Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown and the most sampled drummer in hip hop). He has taught guitar and song writing in Glencoe for more than seven years. His teaching style is result based, fun and flexible. Lynn Sanders has been playing for most of her life and brings extensive musical credentials to the community. She is a newly licensed Simply Music piano teacher, with a B.S. degree in Music Education (Piano Major, vocal/ choral) from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Lynn has taught music in schools and synagogues, and served as musical director at Improv Playhouse, Harand Camp, Frenchwoods, and Piven Theatre. Lynn has taught traditional piano, accompanied dance classes, and performed on piano and guitar at local senior centers and residences. Her background includes performing in the Village Follies at the Winnetka Community House and collaborating on the childrens musical, A Whoopers Tale.

Cornflakes Staff This unique outdoor-based camp offers a combination of creative activities and educational experiences for children ages 33 months through six years of age. Our goal at Cornflakes is to develop the whole child and to treat each child as an individual. Children are encouraged to explore their outdoor world through developmentally appropriate activities. The outdoor approach helps to increase each childs awareness, enjoyment and respect for nature. Daily activities may include adventure walks down the Green Bay Trail, water play at Maple Beach and arts and crafts. Each week culminates with a special event. The staff help foster positive self concept by providing opportunities for achieving success and developing a childs creativity and use of problem-solving. Fencing
Midwest Fencing Academy The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as physical chess. Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, its fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills of fencing. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Classes will consist of warm up time, footwork time, group lesson and bouting. Equipment is provided. Hristo Etropolski is the head coach and owner of the Midwest Fencing Academy. During his career as a member of Bulgarian National Team he competed in the Olympic Games in 1980 and in 1988, placing fifth in 1980. He has won bronze and silver medals in different World Championships in both individual and team tournaments. During his best years as a competitor he won a number of World Cup tournaments and finished in the top eight in others. FUNdamental Soccer is a new and exciting soccer program for children starting out or already involved in soccer. This program has been created to help instill the love of the game in a professional setting surrounded by caring and qualified coaches. KARATE
Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of weaponless self-defense. Our Karate program follows a systemized belt ranking for all participants. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). One must fulfill certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test environment to secure progressive promotions up to and including the black belt (dan) levels. When one has acquired a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Karate, he or she can be promoted to the rank of first degree black belt. Uniforms, belt tests and tournaments are optional and will incur additional costs.
MEET OUR KARATE INSTRUCTORS

Master Hoon Lee has practiced martial arts for over 45 years. His training includes Hapkido, Hwarangdo, Kendo, Tai Chi, Judo and Aikido. Prior to establishing Lees Tai Chi Hapkido Kendo School in 1999, Master Lee taught martial arts at Kansas State University, YMCAs in the Chicago metropolitan area, the Northern Suburban Chinese School, Andersen Consulting and Baxter Healthcare International.

TAI CHI

Tai Chi is a low-impact martial art developed to improve circulation, tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve posture, enhance balance and induce relaxation. Often Tai Chi is studied for its health benefits but this art also has practical and calming benefits for daily life as well. Tai Chi is used by martial arts practitioners to enhance the study of the other art forms. Tai Chi class on Tuesdays covers cultivation of mind, body and spirit by performing a series of Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements and postures as a synchronized group meditation. Qi Gong is the Chinese philosophy and practice of aligning breath, physical activity and awareness for mental, spiritual and physical health. Tai Chi class on Thursdays covers principle and advance techniques of Yang style Tai Chi. In this class students study the traditional forms in depth and also learn meditation, partner sensitivity training and utilize the sword, knife, staff, fan and Qi Gong practices. HAPKIDO

Hapkido, a new addition to the growing stable of WCH martial arts programs, is a dynamic Korean style martial art primarily focusing on self-defense without injury to the aggressor. Many techniques learned in Hapkido training can be integrated into daily life, such as falling techniques, personal safety and situational awareness. The training includes kicking, punching, throwing, falling, pressure points, sparring and more. Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the traditional Karate program for Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on a number of local and national television programs. Ron Stein has trained in Karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with the Winnetka Community House Karate program since 1994.

Taekwondo is a 2000 year old martial art offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Meet Our CERAMICS Instructors

Jennifer Doherty has been teaching art at public and private schools for over 28 years. She holds a Masters degree in Art and Museum Education and has worked for the Davenport Art Gallery in Iowa as the Art Education Specialist. Jennifer has studied in Vermont, Massachusetts and Georgia working in fibers and fabric design. Debra Sampson received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. She has continued her study of ceramics with various instructors and workshops in the Chicago area. Currently, she exhibits and sells her work in three galleries though The Illinois Artisans Program and also in various local fairs under the name DKS Pottery. Greg Schultz received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 1990. He has studied at the graduate level at SAIC. Greg has been studying ceramics at Lill street Art Center since 2002 and has also been a studio member there since 2009. Currently he sells his work online and at his own studio, Schultz Studio Arts. Jenifer Thoem has been sculpting in clay and teaching for over 20 years. A native Georgian, she received a BFA in Ceramics from Georgia Southern University in 1994. She moved to Wilmettefrom Richmond, VA where she owned and operated The Creative Foundry, a ceramics production/teaching studio. Jenifer has experience teaching handbuilding, wheel and mixed media sculpture classes in both public and private schools, and community recreation ceramic centers in both Georgia and Virginia. Jenifers whimsical clay and found object sculptures can be found in many private collections around the United States.

Meet our dance instructors

Gwendolyn Britt has been teaching dance at Winnetka Community House since 1994. She is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music with a concentration in Ballet and Music. Gwendolyn danced professionally in Ruth Pages Chicago Production of The Nutcracker, for the Lynda Martha Dance Company and with Concert Dance Company of Boston. In Boston, she was Associate Director of the Lexington School of Ballet, and she is a certified Cecchetti Council of America teacher. Brittany Burns comes to Winnetka Community House with over 20 years of experience. She has trained in jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop, modern, and ballet at various studios in the Chicagoland area such as Visceral, Joel Hall, and Gus Giordano. After performing around the city with Equilibrium Dance Chicago for four years, Brittany discovered that her true passion was teaching dance to all ages. She loves nothing more than spreading the joy of dance in a fun, educational and supportive environment. Brittany also teaches at The Mount Prospect Center for Tap and Jazz and the Arlington Heights Park District dance programs. She is very excited to share her love and knowledge of the arts at such a wonderful new studio. Patty Marsden has over 25 years of teaching experience. She is a certified dance instructor through the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters and the American Academy of Ballet. As a professional representative for the National Dance Week Organization, she is committed to encourage the growth and development of Dance in America. Patty has functioned as Artistic Director for several suburban dance programs, and as director and choreographer for Impulse Dance Ensemble. She was the dance director at St. Viator High School and taught Master classes for several other high schools. Patty has taught at several private studios and park districts in the Northwest suburbs and on the North Shore. Meghann Mueller received both a BFA in Dance and a BA in History from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She began her early dance training at the Evanston School of Ballet under Kerry Hubata and Laura Wade. During summers Meghann studied at the Joffrey Ballet and on scholarship at the Milwaukee Ballet. While at TCU she had the opportunity to perform works by TCU faculty members, as well as several guest artists including Elizabeth Johnson, Dana Nicolay and TCU Choreographer in Residence Fernando Bujones. In the spring of 2006 Meghanns work, Narrow Anguish, was performed at the American College Dance Festival in the adjudicated concert. In 2007 Meghann formed Project606 Dance with former classmate Maureen Caspers. The company has performed throughout Chicago including at the revered Hamlin Park Fieldhouse and at the Atheneum Theater as a part of Dance Chicago. E. Marc Nevins is Winnetka native, and currently serves as Artistic Director of Ballet Entre Nous, a company he founded in 1985. He has choreographed and staged over 100 works for the company including an annual production of The Nutcracker! at Winnetka Community House. His work has been seen all over Chicago. Mark has appeared with such companies as American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West and locally Evanston Concert Ballet, Oak Park Ballet, Masi Ballet Chicago and Lake Shore Dance Theatre. Mr. Nevins has taught ballet extensively throughout the Chicagoland area for nearly 30 years and has been teaching at Winnetka Community House since 1987.

Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as to each other. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Additional topics will be discussed such as addressing the common puppy issues of house training, mouthing, leadership and preventing behavior problems. Puppies will also learn to sit and begin recall training (coming when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages twofour months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If your dog has not yet received the second round, please plan to attend class without your puppy until the second round of vaccination has been administered.

Creative Paws Creative Paws uses positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the foundation for learning. We believe that training your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your dog! Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. Michael The Dog Guru Jayko With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelors Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between dog and handler. As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to

safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues. You can often see Michael biking or rollerblading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. Remembering Ruth Abelson

Everyone called her Grandma Ruth. And even though she spent seventeen years designing costumes for the Childrens Theatre of Winnetka (CTW), she wasnt concerned only with what the children wore. For all of those years, and over the course of 33 shows, Ruth lent her vision, talent, boundless energy, infinite care and love to CTW, first stepping in when her daughter, Cathy Hirschmann, produced and choreographed Anything Goes in 1997. Cathy recalls feeling over her head. As usual, she called her mother, who also happened to be her best friend and trusted advisor, for help. Cathy knew that her mom, an artist by training and avid and generous volunteer by nature, wouldnt let her down. I need a two-story ship, she told her mom. Do you think you can design it? Like the shows title, Ruths attitude was anything goes and, without hesitation, she designed that ship. Cathy joked that it was so extraordinary, so monumental, that they could have staged Titanic on it. Ruths work didnt stop there. She painted sets, too, even going so far as creating crowds by populating the backdrops with each cast members face and then, when the show ended, gifting each child with his or her portrait. Ruths true talents were revealed in the costumes she designed and sewed over the years. From lions to sea creatures, beauties to beasts, Ruth envisioned original creations, employing innovative materials like hula hoops or metal loops to make the costumes both functional and comfortable. What mattered most to Ruth was how a child felt, driving her to create costumes that delighted their wearers. She was concerned that a child felt like the ultimate Triton, Belle or Peter Pan, but, more than that, she wanted the kids to feel like their absolute best selves. It wasnt enough that each button, seam, spangle, sequin or hem was in place (although this was indeed important to Ruth). What really mattered was that each cast member felt as extraordinary as the clothes they wore. At this, Ruth excelled, fitting after fitting, show after show, and child after child. All the while, Ruth forged deep and meaningful relationships with the hundreds of children who wore her costumes. They inevitably came to see their fittings with Ruth, and the care she extended on their behalf, no matter how large or small their role, as a highlight of CTW cast membership. As Aimee LeFevre, a former cast member of multiple shows, put it, Ruth made each and every person involved with childrens theatre, whether stage crew, the star, or a rock in the background, feel so special. She treated you equally and made sure your costumes fit perfectly. She was happy to switch things to make you look and feel beautiful and special. Ive been in many productions of Beauty and the Beast and CTW is the only one that handmade the costumes. You felt special because they were truly handcrafted and you just knew that Grandma Ruth made it just for you. Ruth managed to transform the ordinary into the magical. From garments she uncovered at second hand stores to bolts of fabrics and buckets of buttons, and without use of a pattern or template save her rich imagination, she created hundreds of memorable costumes. There were princes and princesses and kings and queens. There were cowgirls and cowboys, gangsters and showgirls. There was even dancing cutlery, tumbling starfish, and skittering crabs. And she never forgot a face, either. She remembered all the kids like they were her own. Charlie Oh, another CTW alum, adds, Ruth Abelson brought an incredible love of theatre and community to the Childrens Theatre of Winnetka. Every tiny gangster or underwater crustacean would feel they had meaning on stage because Ruth treated every moment on stage as what it is-- a gift. Her generosity of spirit will be missed. As talented as she was, recalls Emily McLane, referring to a beautiful gold dress Grandma Ruth fashioned for her role in Beauty and the Beast, what sticks with me more was the way she made me feel The early teenage years are awkward for practically everybody, but she never failed to make me feel appreciated, talented, cared for, and, even as an angsty 13-year-old, pretty. (H)er constant support helped me develop into the young woman I am. Ruth was unselfish and fearless, supportive and joyful. She was respected, admired, and loved. Her ability to reunite missing costume parts with their rightful wearers and willingness to go the extra mile, gathering up socks from the dressing room floor to wash before returning them to their owners, is a testament to her generosity of spirit and unflinching calm. Whether repairing a popped button or ripped seam between acts, or providing a human shield so that a young actor could change a costume in a crowded dressing room, her presence reassured the kids that they were being looked after and that they were loved. The CTW community will miss Grandma Ruth deeply, even as new generations of children continue to give life to the costumes she created.

Member registration opens March 11, 2013 and will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Membership does not guarantee placement in a class. All non-members will be able to register March 18, 2013. Registration received through the mail, fax, or in person will be processed by 5:00 p.m. the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by using our online registration at winnetkacommunityhouse.org

Refund Policy
Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

Membership Information
Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class. All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes. Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year. Refunds for memberships will not be available.

Prorated Policy
Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

Inclement Weather
Winnetka Community House will not hold classes on days when the Winnetka Public Schools have cancelled classes due to inclement weather.

Religious Holidays
Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed. Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director. Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations. Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs or activities on Community House property. It is advisable to review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper and sufficient insurance coverage.

How To Register
To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration. Register for programs online at winnetkacommunityhouse.org or on the enclosed registration form. Please print clearly. Read and fill out form completely. By listing your email address, you agree to receive email communications from Winnetka Community House. We will never sell your address, but love to keep in touch with our users to give news about programs, events, and special offers from Winnetka Community House. If you do not wish to receive these emails, please unsubscribe. Sign the registration form. Unsigned forms will not be processed, but will be returned to you. This will delay processing your registration. Registration forms may be mailed or faxed. Registration by telephone is not accepted.

Brochure Errors
Complete details of program policies, procedures, and guidelines are sometimes inadvertently omitted. Errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur in the brochure. When such errors occur the staff will advise you of the change as quickly as possible. We thank you for your understanding.

Credit Cards
You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.

Cancellation of Classes
Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Winnetka Community House has established the Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund to any resident who would like to take part in a Winnetka Community House activity, but is unable to render full payment.
