The scheme has been approved b$ PD<P in its meeting held on #3>"->2"". at a total cost of Rs% =6%=5" million% The e4penditure upto ?une! 2"#" as per ADP 2"#">## is Rs% #"%/-5 million and this $ear allocation is Rs% /%"" million% o capital cost is involved in the approved cost however@ the scheme has been thrown forward be$ond 2"#">##% The obAective falls under priorit$ areas of both (ederal 7ovtB as well as the 7ovtB of *h$ber Pa+htun+hwa% The proAect is directl$ related to the obAective of developing the agricultural sector as reflected in the . th (ive Cear Plan% *h$ber Pa+htun+hwa has been blessed b$ the nature for micro>climates and hence different agro>ecological poc+ets in north! east! center and south of the province% These uni:ue agro>ecological poc+ets render the areas fit for growing various t$pes of fruit plants and vegetable% There is such a diversit$ in the climate within the province that same vegetable crop can be grown man$ times in different regions of the province% These micro>climates can be effectivel$ utili3ed for growing conventional as well as non>conventional fruit crops% 6oreover! the specific obAectives of this proAect are the availabilit$ of certified fruit plant nurseries and vegetable seed production is ver$ nominal in the province% Therefore! farmers raise orchards with non certified fruit plants that lead to rising of non health$! diseased and not true to t$pe orchards% This finall$ gives low 12 The Mall, Peshawar Cantt: Phone & Fax: 091-9212966

(rance! Denmar+! 8&A and Dolland% S(mm'$1 !- #he !.9ec#ives +. To produce total of -3"-=/ numbers of certified plants in four $ear of new and improved varieties of #2 fruit species% :. To ensure continuous production of certified fruit plants b$ private nurseries through advance training! support and guidance% ;. To produce certified vegetables seed% <. To ensure continuous production of certified seed of vegetables b$ selected farmers through advance training! support and guidance% 3. To provide 6" numbers of advance training to farmers! nurser$men! seed producers and other sta+e holders to sensiti3e them to establish new orchards of fruit plants and get high income% 4. To register 6" os farmers! nurser$men with (ederal &eed 1ertification and registration Department ,(&1;RD0 to start certified nurser$ production and vegetable seed production business on scientific grounds% =. To arrange (ield da$s! 24posure visits and seminars on prominent fruit and vegetables at respective locations% 7. To strengthen the private fruit nurser$ industr$ b$ providing a range of selected 7ermplasm for propagation in the province% The proAect has therefore got approved to start bul+ production of certified or truth in labeling fruit plant nurseries in the five selected district of the province according to the fruit species adaptabilit$ in that area for the need of the farmers% &imilarl$ the certified seed production of the vegetables according to their suitabilit$ in the area be started at the five selected research institute of the province for the need of the farmers% This is a pilot proAect and it would further be e4panded to cater the farmer re:uirements for certified fruit plant nurseries and vegetable seed production and finall$ to reduce vegetable seed import% Ph1sic'/ P$!%$ess +. :. ;. <. 3. 1onstruction of two lath houses Purchase of computer with printer 1ertified fruit plants production% 1ertified vegetable seed production% Purchase of (arm implements ,Dand cart! According to P1>) two numbers 9ath houses were re:uired for fruit plant propagation and other important activities related to horticulture promotion at AR) Tarnab% The department has constructed one o lath house and the other erection is in process an$how the plants propagation was not found according to the desire level% &ome cutting of 7uava; Pomegranate were found in the lath house which was also not properl$ maintained b$ the concerned responsible officials% )t is recommended that the department should ta+e proper action and the activities must be improved for :ualit$ production of fruit plants as well as other re:uired species in the great farmerFs interest% :. According to the P1>) the target for fruit plants production in the nurser$ was shown+=:53: numbers of various fruit plants species li+e Peach! Plum! Apricot! Persimmon! Pear! Almond! Pecan! 1itrus! 7uava! 9itchi! 9o:uat! 7rapes! Olive and Pomegranate till completion of the proAect% During the field visit the concerned proAect )ncharge e4plained that <8888 plants were produced which are completel$ damaged b$ flood disaster at AR) Tarnab

Page 3 of 25 and not a single nurser$ plant was available at the station under the proAect% )t is recommended that the officials concerned should ta+e proper action and plan the activities according to the desire level to produce more :ualit$ fruit plants to strengthen horticulture activities in the Division% ;. Arrangement of irrigation s$stem and repair of water channels to ensure efficient water suppl$ was also the mandate of the proAect in the initial $ear of the scheme% During the field visit it was observed that no action was ta+en in this regard and no action plan was available with the concerned officials% The concerned responsible officials ensure the action plan for proAect activities in future to facilitate the farming communit$ for income generation% <. Regarding vegetable seed production a target of 2223*g of various vegetable seed production was shown in the P1>) while on the ground some seed of vegetables are produced b$ the proAect authorit$ but the rate were still not fi4ed to distribute the seed among the farming communit$% )t is recommended that timel$ arrangement for price fi4ation of vegetable seed must be ensured before the season in future to avoid government losses% 3. Training for improved methods of nurser$ propagation! seed technolog$ and orchards la$out and plantation was also the tas+ under the proAect% )t has been observed that no training has been conducted and even the module for farmers training is still not designed b$ the proAect authorit$% &imilarl$ no field da$ and seminars are properl$ conducted b$ the department while two $ears of the proAect has been completed% )t is recommended that the department should improve the strateg$ to facilitate the farmers for income generating activities% 4. To register 6" os farmers! nurser$men with (ederal &eed 1ertification and registration Department ,(&1;RD0 to start certified nurser$ production and vegetable seed production business on scientific grounds% The department could not register an$ nurser$ up till now% The concerned official responded that wor+ on ## private nurser$ registrations is in process and will be registered soon% )t is recommended that the department should concentrate on the activities and ensure the registration of private nurser$ for true to t$pe fruit sapling production% &imilarl$ the department should arrange (ield da$s! 24posure visits and seminars on prominent fruit and vegetables at respective locations to educate the farming communit$ for their betterment%

According to the P1>) a lath house was re:uired to construct at AR) Tarnab Peshawar which was completed but that was not properl$ maintained and the fruit plant species were not grown in the lath house according to the desire level% )t is recommended that the concerned Officials should ta+e proper action to utili3e the lath house for :ualit$ plants propagation% 8nder the proAect some limited numbers of fruit plants li+e 1itrus! 9o:uat! plum! 7rapes were produced in the pol$then bags and no regular nurser$ has been found at AR) Tarnab% The concerned official responded that due to flood the nurser$ plants are totall$ damaged but no proper record was available with the officials% )t is recommended to collect various indigenous species and established a nurser$ for further propagation at the earliest to facilitate the (arming communit$% To strengthen the private fruit nurser$ industr$ b$ providing a range of selected 7ermplasm for propagation in the province no coordination has been observed among the department and private growers% )t is recommended that strong lin+ages should be developed with private growers to achieve the target :ualitativel$ for the farmerFs benefits% (Re/'#e) &ic#($es !- #he '.!ve &$!9ec# '$e 's (")e$*

Page 8 of 25 medicinal plants and preserving the gene pool as well% The overall goal of the proAect is to develop cultivable wasteland with low input low cost technolog$ of raising fruit and vegetables plants alongwith providing an opportunit$ to poor masses to get engaged in income related activities towards their livelihood improvement% 8tili3ation of waste land for productive activities! growing drought tolerant fruits! vegetables and medicinal plants! increasing farmer income through value addition in medicinal herbs! improving human nutrition! living standard! creation of Aob opportunities! planting of 6 adaptive research plots! publishing of one thousands pamphlets on the production technolog$ of the target fruits and other plants etc are also the obAective of this incumbent proAect% A"'/1sis6Rec!mme")'#i!". Against the target of plantation at 6 various location the department laid out - orchards at different location of Peshawar and 6ardan Division on 6 acre each of various fruit species and medicinal plants li+e Pomegranate! (ig! 7rapes! Onab! Aloe 'era and ber% During monitoring two sites were visited b$ the monitoring team one at village 6an+i &harif and another at village <alai *a+a &ahib and the success percentage of the plants were satisfactor$ an$ how Porcupine attac+ on the pomegranate was observed at 6an+i &harif District owshehra% The department was advised to mulch the plants to prevent the attac+ of porcupine% Regarding nurser$ production presentl$ no proper well established nurser$ was seen under the proAect% The concerned ProAect )nvestigator responded that plant nurser$ damaged due to flood and well be re>established% )t is recommended that the department should ta+e proper arrangement to establish the nurser$ for proAect activities% An amount of Rs% =""!"""/> were allocated under the head of training component for farming communities% The department utili3ed onl$ Rs%##""""/Jand the remaining amount Rs%2.""""/J which shows that no :ualit$ training has been conducted% &imilarl$ no proper training module was available with the concerned officials% )t is recommended that a training module must be developed and conduct :ualit$ training to facilitate the farming communities in the development of horticulture industr$ in future% Regarding (ield da$s for the $ear 2"".>#" an amount of Rs%2=""""/J was allocated and the e4pe3nditure is onl$ Rs%.""""/J while Rs%#-""""/J &urrendered% &imilarl$ against the total released budget of Rs%="""""/J under the head of e4posure visit for farming communities the e4penditure is onl$ Rs%#3/5.-/> and the remaining amount surrendered which also shows that no :ualit$ field da$s and e4posure visits are conducted b$ the officials concerned% )t is recommended to improve the :ualit$ of e4posure visits as well as conduct proper field da$s to educate the communit$ members regarding the income generating activities% (Re/'#e) &ic#($es !- #he '.!ve &$!9ec# '$e 's (")e$*

The scheme has been approved for a total cost of Rs% 3"%"" million in DD<P meeting held on 25>##>2""/% As per ADP 2"#">##! an e4penditure of Rs% 2#%.-3 million has been incurred on the scheme up to ?une 2"#" and Rs% =%2-= millions have been allocated for the current financial $ear and the scheme has been thrown forward be$ond 2"#">## with allocation of Rs% 3%5.3 millions% Agricultural sector! renowned for its productivit$! owes much of its successes to a continuing flow of improved crop varieties that produce higher $ields and better withstand pests! diseases! and climate e4tremes% The genes necessar$ for these improved crops are contained in plant 7ermplasm! the material in seeds or other plant parts that controls heredit$% To maintain a high level of agricultural productivit$! plant breeders need access to an ample suppl$ of 7ermplasm with diverse genetic characteristics so that the$ mKcan shuffle these genes to develop plant varieties that will provide increased $ields and better resist once to pests! diseases! and environmental stresses% Dowever! there is no mechanism for immediate breeding and future need% The establishment of 7ermplasm repositor$ would ensure this purpose and would maintain these diverse genot$pes for decades without an$ deterioration% The overall obAective of the proAect is to ensure food securit$ b$ preserving the diverse genetic stoc+ of different crop plants and utili3e it as and when needed! thus curtailing the potential threat of famine due to an$ sudden disease outbrea+ or other ha3ards to the commercial genot$pes and that can be replaced/repaired from the available and suitable 7ermplasm stoc+ in the repositor$% Ph1sic'/ Achieveme"#s.
