Pimsleur Swedish

Introduction
The Swedish Language
Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by aproximately ten million people, primarily in Sweden and parts of Finland. Until World War , it was also spoken in parts of !at"ia and #stonia. While there are many regional dialects in Sweden, there is a uniform and standard Swedish, called Rikssvenska $as tought in this course%, which e"ol"ed from the central Swedish dialect spoken around Stockholm. Swedish is similar to &anish and Norwegian. 'hese languages are mutually intelligible to certain extent, more so in written than in spoken form. Swedish is a decendant of (ld Norse, the language spoken in Scandina"ia during the )iking #ra. New "ocabulary was introduced during different eras as a conse*uence of religious and commercial interaction with other cultures. +(ld Swedish+ is the term used for mede"al Swedish starting around ,-./. 'he main influence at this time came from the 0oman 1atholic 1hurch. 2any of the Greek and !atin loan words stem from this period. &uring the 2iddle 3ges, a large number of German and &utch immigrants added new "ocabulary to the Swedish language. 'hese new terms were mostly associated with areas such as trade, administration, and warfare. 'he printing press and the #uropean 0eformation mark the beginning of 2odern Swedish $the ,4th through the ,5th centuries%. 'he Gusta" )asa 6ible $,.7,%, a full translation of the 6ible into Swedish, began a mo"ement towards a more consistent Swedish. 8ing Gusta" )asa printed -/// copies of the 6ible and distributed them to the churches throughout Sweden. For the first time, church ser"ices were conducted in Swedish rather than in !atin. n the middle of the ,5 th century, public school was introduced and all students were then educated in standard Swedish. 1ontemporary Swedish, as it is spoken today, dates from the early -/th century. 'he last ma9or spelling reform occured in ,5/4. n late ,54/s, a significant linguistic reform took place which is reffered to as the +du $you%:reform.+ ;istorically, Sweden had different ways to adress people, depending on their social status. With the liberali<ation of Swedish society in the ,5./s and ,54/s, class distinctions became less important and + du+ became the standard way to adress someone, e"en in formal context. 'he Swedish alphabet is a !atin:based alphabet consisting of twenty:nine letters= the same twenty:six as in #nglish plus three additional "owels $>, ?, @%. Aronounciation, howe"er, is *uite different from #nglish. Swedish has certain features that are important for proper pronounciation. 'hese include=

the destinction between long and short "owels. 'he general rule is that a "owel is +short+ if it is followed by two consonants, and +long+ if followed by one consonant. Aitch accent $tones% that gi"e Swedish its typical +singsong+ rhythm. 'here are two pitch accents= acute $falling% and gra"e $rising%. 'he acute accent is usually on one syllable words, while the gra"e accent is on words of more than one syllable. 'his pitch accent is not marked in written Swedish and can be learned only by listening to the spoken language. t "ery rarely affects the meaning of a word.

n addition to pitch accent, Swedish polysyllabic words include a stress, usually on the first syllable. 'here are exceptions to this stress ruleB for example, in loan words and words with certain endings, the stress may be on the last syllable. 'he Swedish language has some sounds and sound combinations which do not exist in #nglish and some peculiarities of spelling. ;ere are some basic guidelines. n Swedish the so:called +soft+ and +hard+ "owels affect pronounciation of three letters. 3 table of these letters and changes follows=

Letter
c g k

Hard Vowels a, o, u,
c as in cat g as in go k as in kangaroo

Soft Vowels e, i, y, ,
c as in city y as in yes sh as in shoe

(ther different spellings and pronounciations include= dj, gj hj and lj sound like y in yes, tj and kj sound like the sh in shoe, rs sounds like the sh in shoe, ch, sch, sh, sj, sk, skj, and stj make a breathy sound like the beginning of the name Hugh. n some parts of Sweden these letter combinations can also sound like the sh in shoe.

n addition, the sounds of "owels and change slightly when followed by an r. 3lso, the consonants s, n, d, t and l, when preceded by and r, form a new, duller, merged sound. When learning Swedish, pay close attention to the difference between the written and spoken forms. n spoken language, many letters will be skipped or reduced. For example, in speech the word och $+and+% will sound like o $the +ch+ is silent%. 'he letters g, d, and t at the end of a word are also usually silent or are reduced in pronounciation.

Reading Booklet

3 characteristic of Swedish grammar is that nouns ha"e two genders, called +common+ and +neuter.+ 'hey are either en words $common gender% or ett $neuter%= for example, en bok $a book% and ett barn $a child%. 'o say +the,+ the articles are placed after the noun as in the word boken $the book% or barnet $the child%.

Reading Lessons
3fter an initial introduction to the spoken language, reading is intergated into the program starting with Unit #le"en. n these 0eading !essons you will learn to sound out the Swedish alphabet, beginning with short words or combinations of letters, then progressing to words, word combinations, and short phrases, increasingly building in lenght untill you will be reading complete sentences in context. 'he Swedish alphabet is systematically introduced, and you will learn to associate each letter with the sound od the Swedish language. Cou will not, at first, be reading for meaning, but rather for soundDsymbol correlation. #"entually, when the sound system is mastered, you will be able to look at known "ocabulary and +read for meaning.+ 6y the end of the 1omprehensi"e !e"el course, you will be reading at the same le"el as you ar speaking. 'he reading items in the lessons ha"e been selected especially to gi"e you practice in the Swedish sounds and sound combinations. Cour "ocabulary ac*uisition will begin after youE"e learned the new, different sound system. Cou should read aloud, as directed. 'he process of saying the words out loud will reinforce and enhance your Swedish language ac*uisition and will help lodge the sound of the Swedish language in your memory. n these 0eading !essons, you will learn to look at the Swedish alphabet with Swedish eyes. 'here are twenty 0eading !essons at the end of the units, starting with Unit #le"en. 'hese lessons are also combined and pro"ided at the end of the course. Cou may choose to do the 0eadings along with the units, or you may wait until you ha"e completed the course and do them al together. 0epeat the 0eading !essons as often as you wish. nstructions on how to proceed with 0eadings are contained in the audio.
