St James Street Big Local Getting Started Coordinator

Depending on the success of the work undertaken there is a possibility of the contract being extended. The contract offer can be either as an employee or as freelancer contractor.

Job Summary To assist the St James Street Big Local Steering Group to establish a resident-led 10 year programme of community development and social regeneration initiatives and projects in the St James Street area of Walthamstow. Engage with local residents and increase residents awareness and participation in St James Big Local Coordinate and lead in the delivery of the St James Street Big Local Getting Started activities Provide St James Street with a focal point for communication, administration and coordination. Supervise and support the work of project workers and volunteers. Establish an administrative office for the coordination of the work of St James Street Big Local

Background St James Street Big Local The St James Street area of Walthamstow was awarded a 1million grant from the Big Lottery as part of the nationwide Big Local initiative in December 2012. The aim of the fund is to enable local people to make lasting changes to the neighbourhood over 10 years. Please visit the St James Street Big Local website for information about the initiatives undertaken in the last year www.stjamesbiglocal.co.uk Local residents have been meeting for under a year and have formed a Steering Group; the Steering Group consists of local residents and representatives of locally based organisations. In November 2013 the Steering Group successfully submitted a Getting Started application to the Local Trust. The Steering Group are now looking to appointment a coordinator to lead the St James Street Big Local initiative and assist the Steering Group. Big Local 150 areas have been selected as Big Local areas in England, for information about Big Local please go to www.localtrust.org.uk/big-local The four programme outcomes for Big Local are: Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.

Main Tasks
The main function of the post will be coordinate the listed tasks with the Steering Group & volunteers: With the Steering Group write and submit an outline 10 year plan to the Local Trust Organise/coordinate with other specialist workers and volunteers 2 large events: Community Conference / Volunteer Fair and Big Lunch Event Reach out to existing stakeholder groups and further develop the Steering Group's work on a directory and network Coordinate a pilot Street Champion project Review and evaluate the survey of local businesses and work with the Steering Group to devise recommendations. In partnership with other agencies, promote entrepreneurship by running a series of training meetings or seminars and/or pop up stalls & shops. Explore ways that St James Street end of Walthamstow Market can be developed. Work alongside specialist workers enabling a series of "Asset Based Community Development" workshops (most likely with the local schools) Produce promotional material and organise the distribution of materials. Build up an Events Kit for use at community events e.g. gazebo, portable display stand, roll out banner etc. Increase awareness and participation in the St James Big Local
