BACKGROUND OF THE IMS INSTITUTE


Founded in 1929, the Institute for Testing of Materials is the oldest scientific research institution in Serbia. The basic idea at the time of foundation was the need for a unique institution that would, in addition to research and development, also work on regular control of raw materials, semi-finished products, and products of the industry of chemicals, construction and metals. The IMS Institute acquired international reputation owing to the development and application of building technology and prestressing systems, as well as a result of extensive research pertaining to the protection of facilities from water, acoustic and thermal insulation, protection from fire, development, research and rehabilitation of constructions, and numerous completed projects in the field of architecture, civil engineering and mechanical structures, technology, geotechnics and road infrastructure.

ACTIVITIES OF IMS INSTITUTE


Activities of the IMS Institute encompass laboratory investigations of building materials, certification of products, preparation of design documentation, scientific research work in all fields of construction industry, development and application of prestressing technologies, on-site supervision, testing of various types of structures, and the control of mechanical equipment.

POLICY OF THE IMS INSTITUTE


The management of the IMS Institute has opted for a quality management system based on management of processes, according to JUS ISO 9001:2001 standards, for which the IMS Institute has been certified. The IMS Institute has confirmed its competence by the highest level of accreditation with the Accreditation Body of Serbia and Montenegro (JUAT), by accreditation of testing and metrology laboratories and the Certification Body.

GOALS OF THE IMS INSTITUTE


Intensive activity on the innovation of regulatives in the field of construction industry and harmonization with European Union directives, based on contemporary scientific achievements and their introduction into engineering practice. The goal of the IMS Institute is to maintain the leading role in innovations, research and development, and the experimental field in the process of transition, namely the adaptation of construction and energy industry of Serbia to the requirements and standards of European countries.

MATERIALS
The Centre for Materials carries out the testing and research of mechanical, chemical, and physical properties of basic construction materials and products, as well as performance of structures, elements of buildings, and complete buildings. Test results are used as a basis for certification and for establishing the quality of materials, products and works performed. Experience in expert and development work in the field of basic and applied research is used to upgrade the technologies of production of construction materials, construction works, technical regulatives and standards. A significant part of research activities is devoted to sustainable utilization of energy and renewable energy sources, to the protection of the environment, and to the application of recycled raw materials in the production of construction materials.

METALS AND ENERGETICS


Today, the Centre for Metals and Energetics is the largest laboratory for testing of metals in the region. In addition to numerous standard and expert tests by destructive or non-destructive methods, calibration of test machines for metals and other materials (force, pressure, hardness and torque) is also carried out. The Centre works on research projects and studies, offers consulting services, and carries out the testing of basic materials and welded joints. Development projects and expert services encompass a broad range of researches of components and equipment for maintenance, as well as the reconstruction and revitalization of energetic, production and other facilities. Since its foundation, the Centre for Metals and Energetics of the IMS Institute was present in all capital energetic facilities (coal and hydro power plants, mining facilities, shipyards and oil refineries), as well as process engineering facilities and various static and dynamic load bearing steel structures. The references of the Centre: professional and quality work of highly qualified and specialized human resources, modern equipment and continuous development and adopting new techniques of investigation, are recommendations for investors, contractors, and consultants. The Centre for Metals and Energetics comprises of a laboratory for testing of metals and a metrology laboratory (LAB 36 ATSCG).

ROADS AND GEOTECHNICS


DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS
Activities on the preparation of standard and specialized mixtures, cement stabilization and asphalt mixtures, quality control of materials and built road structures and contemporary investigation methods, accompanied by data processing on-site and in the central laboratory, have contributed to the upgrading of construction technology and maintenance of roads and airports. Scientific research devotes special attention to environment impact assessment of roads, the development of information systems in the field of road infrastructure and the development and application of the IMS video system to for acquisition of road data.

GEOTECHNICAL RESEARCH AND DESIGN


A broad range of activities encompasses theoretical and experimental research of physical characteristics and mechanical properties of soil, changes caused by loads and earthquakes, and assessment of soil deformation and displacement, studies and investigations in the field of foundations of buildings, roads and hydro technical structures. Control of earth embankment and dams during construction, replacement of soil with material of better characteristics, mechanically and chemically stabilized foundations, as well as special technical documentation for investigation of subsoil that causes damage and irregular behaviour of structures.

BUILDING TECHNOLOGY AND STRUCTURES


PRESTRESSING TECHNOLOGIES
Abreast of global trends in the construction industry, the IMS Institute has developed modern technologies and a broad range of equipment and anchors for cables made of smooth wire (the IMS system) and tendons (SPB and SPB SUPER systems), for forces from 12 to 7,700 kN. These systems are applied for post- and adhesion prestressing of concrete, prestressing of geotechnical anchors, for oblique cables for bridges, for mounting constructions, for lifting heavy weights, and for other special works. Listed technologies are based on the application of Eurocode and accompanying European norms and standards, as well as on FIP/fib recommendations. Modern systems and specialized and highly qualified human resources enabled the participation of the IMS Institute in the realization of the most significant facilities in the country, as well as its presence in many countries worldwide.

DESIGN AND BUILDING TECHNOLOGY


Since its foundation, design of architectural and civil engineering structures is one of the basic activities of the IMS Institute. Our experts have participated in designing of numerous significant facilities bridges, halls, residential buildings, various engineering constructions, commercial and public buildings. The building technology, developed in the IMS Institute, is a modern system of prefabricated construction of the skeleton, with an original concept of connection of columns and ceilings by applying prestressing. The IMS Building Technology is characterized by exceptional technical performance, organizational efficiency, and design utilizing catalogue elements for primary construction and secondary systems, small quantities of concrete and steel, economy of production and fast assembly. To date, the IMS Building Technology has been applied to construct over 150,000 apartments in the country and throughout the world.

TESTING, INVESTIGATION AND REHABILITATION OF STRUCTURES


Investigation of structures under static and dynamic pressure is performed on-site and in the IMS Institute laboratories, in order to establish the bearing and durability of structures, as well as the quality of works performed. Research, design and development, when introducing new structures and building systems in practice all these activities are carried out in the laboratory for the investigation of structures, as well as on buildings or construction sites and in production plants.

An exceptionally important area of activity of the Centre for Building Technology and Structures is the design for rehabilitation of damaged concrete and steel structures. Specially trained teams work on specialist activities of rehabilitation and the IMS Institute also offers services of instruction and on-site supervision for mentioned works.

IMS BUILDING TECHNOLOGY


Building technology, developed in the IMS Institute, according to the idea of prof. Branko eelj, is a contemporary system of prefabricated construction of the skeleton. The original concept of IMS technology lies in the connection of columns and ceilings by applying prestressing. This manner of connection of primary elements ensures a monolithic structure which is exceptionally resistant to seismic influences. IMS Building Technology is characterized by exceptional technical performance, organizational efficiency and design utilizing catalogue elements for primary construction and secondary systems, small quantities of concrete and steel, economy of production and fast assembly. IMS Building Technology enables the design of flexible solutions, by applying same structural elements for the construction of various buildings residential and commercial edifices, schools, hospitals, garages and buildings for light industry. To date, IMS Building Technology has been applied to construct over 150,000 apartments in the country and throughout the world. IMS technology is applied in factories for apartments in Serbia, as well as throughout the world in Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Ethiopia, the Philippines, in Georgia, Croatia, Italy, China, Cuba (three factories), Hungary, Russia (three factories).
