Local News

October month was a massive month for Step into Life. We launched our new brand. Our franchisees changed over all their equipment and uniforms and all the new marketing and advertising material was released to the public for the first time. As you can imagine every single item within the Step into Life range that had the orange sun printed, embroidered or screen printed had to be changed. It was a huge logistical exercise by any stretch of the imagination. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our Franchisees; trainers and staff for the tremendous effort they all put in, in helping the change over to the new brand run so smoothly and efficiently. With out their help this exercise would have been a much more difficult task to manage. Another special thank you needs to be conveyed to all those members who sent us messages of support by e mail, telephone or fax. Thank you for your support and well wishes. It was truly amazing to see the number of members who took the time to drop us a line congratulating Step into Life and wishing us all the best for the new logo and the brand. I was once given advise by a very successful business man who told me that in order to be successful in business you need to surround yourself with good people. Continued on page 2

At Step into Life we are surrounded by an amazing group of people. The life blood of Step into Life is our group of amazing Franchisees. They are dedicated and passionate about Step into Life and have the desire to succeed and to help others succeed. Not only are they all highly trained and qualified but they all possess a unique quality, something called the care factor, the ingredient that separates us from the rest. In this news letter you will read about our state management teams who have helped Step into Life get where it is today. Without this dedicated group of individuals Step into Life would not have been able to expand into all the states of Australia. Each one of our state managers (Master Franchisees) brings a unique set of skills to our management team. Their professionalism and enthusiasm is infectious. At a recent Step into Life Victoria function, I asked one of the clients What do you like about Step into Life? without hesitation she answered I have the best trainer in the world! I guess that says it all! At Step into Life we are surrounded by good people, in fact the best people you could hope for. Regards Mark Cohen Director

Who are the State Managers? John Pidgeon Step into Life South Australia I looked at the Step into Life business opportunity whilst I was working in Horsham in 2002. I was already working outdoors with my job and wanted to find a business that kept me outdoors whilst staying in the Fitness Industry. I saw Adelaide as a huge opportunity as at the time, there were no Step into Life venues in SA. I decided to move over and launch Step into Life in SA the following year and have not looked back. I now run Step into Life West Lakes as well as managing the state which includes helping and support the 11 Franchise venues in SA and growing the state. What a life, helping clients achieve their goals and also helping like minded business owners achieve their business goals!! What was I doing before and my qualifications? Qualifications: Bachelor of Teaching (Phys Ed major), Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness, Level 1 Football Coach. Previous experience: 5 years as a Phys Ed teacher at Horsham West Primary School, 2 years Zone Officer for the Victorian Primary School Sports Association, 2 yrs Nth Ballarat Rebels Fitness Advisor, Assistant Coach Kalkee Football Club 2 yrs.

Cathy Stacey Step into Life Victoria I really love my job. When I first heard about Step into Life I wanted to own 10 (yes ten!) franchises! Then Larry offered me the State of Victoria as my territory which meant instead of running my own franchises I could do what I love best and that is to help support and develop other franchisees businesses. The best thing about it is that I have an awesome team in our office that includes my business partner Elsa, who brings a huge smile to the office when she is there, Sheila who is my right hand man, Ruth who is the report Queen and Simon who handles our merchandise with precision. Every day is different with 38 different Franchisees with differing needs and personalities it is a very challenging, inspiring and rewarding world to be in!

Who are the State Managers cont.

Elsa McMillan Step into Life Victoria Elsa graduated as a primary school teacher with a Physical Education major and spent many years in the Education Department teaching primary classrooms and or PE specialist. After her two daughters went to school she returned to the work force as a Toddler Kindy Gymbaroo franchisee. Elsa taught early childhood education and Perceptual Motor programmes in this arena and then spent 10 years at the head office of Gymbaroo as the Franchisee Training and development manager. She sold her franchise in 2003 and left Gymbaroo looking for a new challenge and found it in the opportunity to be Master franchisees in Victoria with her business partner Cathy Stacey Linda Schlencker Step into Life New South Wales How did I become involved in Step into Life? I had just finished Cert III and was looking to be full time in the industry. An invitation arrived in the mail and I thought I would go along to a presentation to nick a few ideas. Larry Cohen (Director) and Deb Saywell (Glenmore Park Franchisee) must have done a great job on the night because I left there wanting to own several franchises or become involved at a state levelgood timingthe Master position was available! 3 Years later no regrets! What was I doing before? I had started as a management consultant with Price Waterhouse after completing my Commerce Degree, I worked with them for 3 years in Sydney and 2 years in New York (nice place to visit, dont wanna live there!). Then I took a career back flip and went into adventure travel for a few years then got into to the health industry as operations manager for a medical centre business. That is when I started studying Cert III and decided to change careers yet again! I think I have found my niche herefinally it only took about 15 years working to find out what I love and make a living doing it! Ian and Jay Verrico Step into Life New Queesland How did we become involved in Step into Life? Ian and I are not only a partnership in business, but partners in life as well. We are originally from England and have been living in this beautiful country for four years now. We got a flier to attend a presentation for Step into Life, and we decided to go along and steal some ideas for me to start up on my own. Ian and I were blown away with the concept and professionalism of the business as a whole.Within 5 seconds of walking out of the presentation the decision had been made without one of us saying a word to each other that I would buy a franchise. What were we doing before? We both hold English diplomas in Personal Training and Sports Therapy and have over ten years experience working in the fitness industry. After taking my diploma I began working in a gymnasium in London, the gym was situated around the corner from Buckingham Palace, I was lucky enough to be Trainer to the stars for a while with a top International model, overseas royalty and a film producer being on my list of clients. I moved from personal trainer to gym but hated the switch as it took me away from my first love of training clients. Ian started up his own business called Supreme Fitness. Also based primarily in London so he picked up his own A-list clients. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to be a part of what is not only such a unique concept but an amazing team of people.

Health & Fitness Article

DEALNG WITH MUSCLE PAIN AFTER EXERCISE Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after exercise is not uncommon, particularly if you are just beginning exercise program or changing activities. For those starting a new exercise routine or learning a new sport, some muscle soreness may be felt from 1248 hours following the activity. You may also experience muscle stiffness, fatigue and weakness. Rest assured, this is a normal response to unusual exertion as the muscles adapt to the new stress. Over time this adaptation leads to greater muscle strength and endurance and the same activity will no longer result in soreness. Delayed onset muscle soreness is generally the worst within the first 2 days following the activity and subsides over the next few days. Causes of DOMS It is thought that delayed onset muscle soreness is the result of microscopic tearing of the muscle fibers. The amount of tearing (and soreness) depends on the activity, the intensity and the time of the activity. Any movement you aren't used to can lead to DOMS, but eccentric muscle contraction (movements that cause muscle to contract while it lengthens) seem to cause the most soreness. Examples of eccentric muscle contractions include going down stairs, running downhill, lowering weights and the downward motion of squats and push-ups. In addition to small muscle tears there can be associated swelling in a muscle which may contribute to soreness. Preventing DOMS
While DOMS is common and annoying. There are many things you can do to prevent, avoid and shorten DOMS. Here are a few tips: Warm up thoroughly before activity and cool down completely afterward. Perform easy stretching after exercise. When beginning a new activity start gradually .

Too Late! You are Already Sore.

Here are some tips for treating delayed soreness: Wait. Soreness will go away in 3 to 7 days with no special treatment. Avoid any vigorous activity that increases pain. Do some easy low-impact aerobic exercise - this will increase blood flow to the affected muscles, which may help diminish soreness. Use the R.I.C.E. method of treating injuries. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) Use gentle stretching on the affected area. Gently massage the affected muscles, There is some evidence that vitamin C may decrease soreness. Don't forget to warm up completely before your next exercise session.

HAVING A BALL!
249 excited and excitable members of the Step into Life family clients and partners, trainers and special guests attended the inaugural Step into Life Spring Ball st in Melbourne on October 21 . And what a Ball they had! How lovely to see the results of all the hard work in training sessions we were an elegantly turned out group of beautiful people! During our delicious three course meal we were introduced to the clients nominated for the Super Achiever and Dead Keen Awards, as well as the Trainers who had been nominated by clients for the Trainer of the Year Award.

Matt, Michelle, Aleasha & Aaron all dressed up at the ball ~ we had to wear a tie and everything! Thank you to the members who got together to organize and write a fantastic nomination for the trainer of the year award. I appreciate it heaps! Lets get us all down there next year to make loud noises and cheers for our Keysborough group!

We danced to the easy sounds of Blue Remedy, and through the evening clients won an array of door prizes generously sponsored by Subaru, Rock Portrait Photography, New Balance, Sky High Restaurant and Gloss Beauty Therapy. Tension mounted, then turned to rapturous applause as the five finalists in each category were announced . . . Robyn Carmichael of Croydon was the judges choice for SUPER ACHIEVER 2006. And Patty Etchell of Chelsea, topped a tough cast for the DEAD KEEN AWARD 2006. Hearty Congratulations ladies! We are proud of your achievements and great attitude. Cathy Stacey, Victorian Master Franchisee put her trainers through enormous strain as she drew out the proceedings counting down to the Trainer of the Year. Submissions from clients were heartfelt in their praise and appreciation the judges had no easy task but the Thornbury Thumpers got their Trainer over the line to become our first ever client-nominated Trainer of the Year. Bravo Nicky Dean!!! For once Nicky was almost speechless, but her clients took over the stage in delight and proudly and loudly performed their rap classic Hawthorn client, Steve McGrath of Rock Portrait Photography, was the official photographer for the night see some great moments by following the link: http://www.rockportrait.com.au/sales/061021_stepintolife/ index.html A great night was had by all.
