Uses & Abuses of Statistics Uses:

o Statistics is use to presents the facts in definite form. o Statistics is used to simplify many complexities of different statistical procedures. o Statistics is very widely used to make comparison for making accurate decision. It compares the result of one year with other years in finding out the reasons for changes and effect of such changes in future. o Statistics is used for the formation of policies in most of the organizations. o Statistics widens the individual experience and knowledge. o Statistics tests the law of other sciences. o Statistics also helps in formulating and testing of hypotheses and developing new theories. o Statistics is very commonly used to make predictions in many business and non business organizations. o Statistics helps in giving a well understanding and correct explanation of a phenomenon of nature. o Statistics is used to make any kind of investigation in any field of study. o Statistics creates a better understanding of any information through the use of graphs and figures. o Statistics helps to solve problem if the data is very huge u can use sampling technique. o Statistics also provide aid the authorities to supervise subordinates in different fields. o Statistics helps in planning. We cannot imagine planning without the use of statistics. o Statistics is indispensable to business and commerce. A business man and an industrial employ uses statistical methods in their work. o The structure of insurance is based on statistics; insurance companies make extensive use of the statistical data. o It is widely used in plant sciences, physical sciences, medical sciences and in social sciences. o Brokers, speculators and investigators also use statistics to make future decisions. o Statistics also helps in assembling of appropriate quantitative data. o Statistics are the eyes of administration. Various problems such as crime drink, evils, poverty etc. require statistical investigation in order to study there causes. o Statistical data are the only means for handling large masses of numerical data. o Statistics is used to drawing valid inference; along with calculate of their consistency about the population parameters from the model data. www.hrmars.com 2

Abuses:
o Statistics does not deal with the individual measurement it deals with combines. o Statistics deals only with quantities and characteristics. o Statistics requires skill and efficiency otherwise it will lead to misinterpretations. o Statistics is just a tool to find the end, and not the end itself it. o Statistical data collected for given reason cannot be useful to any situation. o It is not always possible to compare statistical data, unless they are equal in character. o Statistical data are accurate only on an average. o Statistical results or law are only true on average. o One of the biggest abuses of statistics is that it deals with the characteristics, which can b numerically specified. o If sufficient care is not exercised in collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data, statistical results might be misleading. o Statistics cannot be applied to heterogeneous data. o Only a person, who has an expert knowledge of statistical methods, can handle statistical data.
