St. Peter Damien

Since I am out of town for my nephews funeral, and it is a short week anyway, I have only announcements this week. I will share, however, one sliver of the homily given on Saturday to the students at Christendom College at a Memorial Mass a great reflection for us on our ultimate purpose of the Christian life, something which death forces us to re-consider:
The Christian lifeand Christian deathis all about hope: that confident trust that God is true to his promises, especially His promise of eternal lifethat he has prepared a place for usand that He gives us the means to make it there. He shows us the way of truth that leads to that eternal life. Charlie was a hopeful mannot anxious, not in a hurry, not easily frazzled. He had a calm assurance about him, manifested in his poetic good humor, especially in his love for the poetry of Keats a poet who himself would die young, and who spoke so melancholically about the bittersweetness and shortness of life: The weariness, the fever and the fret Where youth grows pale, and specter-thin, and dies; Where but to think is to be full of sorrow. (Ode to A Nightingale) Charlie knew, along with Keats, that this life is a valley of tears in which we mourn and weep and yet Charlie had joy and peace because he had hope: a deep, confident trust in God. The Christian lifeand Christian deathis all about love: the love that Jesus gives us in showing us the way of truth that leads to life; the love that Jesus has shown us in sharing in our deathbut in order to conquer death and to offer us life, to prepare a place for us with Him, to take us to himself. We, in turn, are to show the love we have learned from Jesus back to Him and to one another.
